Why no lo-fi forum?

Yep, the plan was that it would arrive with this upgrade. But due to bugs in the forum software there's some issues with it.

Someone from the software company is looking into things further right about now, so hopefully they'll be a solution soon, within a few days at most I hope.

To help me get a grasp of how best to deploy that skin when available, could people please tell me which mobile device are you using, and what is it about things as they are at the mo which makes you so desperate for the mobile skin?

(Some mobile devices work great with things as they are).

I've got an HTC Desire and I really liked the mobile skin. The links were nice and easy to hit, there wasn't unnecessary space taken up with avatars, the posts took almost the whole width of the screen and were easy to read without zooming. The pages loaded extremely quickly, too.

The full site works with a mobile device but you need to zoom in a long way to read it (and you have to re-zoom every time you go to a new page with my device) and you have to zoom a very long way in to be able to hit the 'jump to first unread post' link. Put it this way -- if I hadn't seen how nicely the mobile one worked I wouldn't miss it. :)

edit: also, with the full site, when you've zoomed in far enough to read the text comfortably, the poster's info won't fit horizontally with the post so you have to pan left and right a lot to know who's saying what. The mobile skin fitted horizontally so you could just scroll up and down.

This hasn't been forgotten.

First, let me say that the lo-fi skin is now called the mobile skin.

There were some bugs in the first release of version 3.1 of the forums software, related to deploying a custom mobile skin. This took a while to get resolved.

Then the custom mobile skin I'd had made didn't work as it should do when it was imported into the 'live' forums. At about the same time another (minor) forums software upgrade was released, so it was presumed the issue with importing the skin was the result of changes in that upgrade. So the custom skin had to be recreated, but there were issues with availability of the guy who was doing it for me. But eventually it got done.

But again the same problem existed - the skin he created worked ok on a test system, but looked different when imported into the live forums.

The problem was passed back to the forum software makers, but there was a delay because the guy who was dealing with it was on his holidays.

Anyway, today, I've had another guy get in touch, to tell me that I've discovered a design fault. Everything is working as they planned it to, but they hadn't planned for the likes of me who'd build a skin on a different system to the one it would be used on. So sometime in the near-future they're going to have to change the software design to cure the problem I've discovered.

In the meantime I've been given a way to work around the problem, so the mobile skin is just about ready to be deployed - I'm just waiting to hear back on a couple of things I need to double-check, and then it'll be available to be used. This'll hopefully be no later than the end of this week.

Please note that the mobile skin will be active automatically for people using specific mobile devices. If the mobile skin doesn't suit you you'll be able to switch back to the full skin via a link at the bottom of the page.
