Some of these are amazing!

I've allways been interested in photography, but never really had the time to get into it.

I might buy myself a digital camera over the summer & then try & take a good sunrise/sunset shot from the ferris wheel at Leeds.

I'm recording a new EP with my band soon, IF anyone would be interested in helping me out with artwork that would be awesome.

Bit "postcardy", but gotta love those mirror lakes. All the hard work done for you, and so effective.

Hello lovely camera peeps,

Having read through a lot but not all of this thread I was hoping to pick your brains about something. Mrs Hallamboy is in my opinion a good photographer for someone shooting on a regular digital camera. I would like to get her a DSLR for her birthday, but am unsure what would be a good one for a DSLR novice. I'm thinking of something that can be grown into as experience grows, but not so basic that the urge to move up the ranks is almost immidate.

Please bless me with your knowledge good people!

I was also looking for some ideas for a new camera, am not in the market for an SLR as cant afford one but one of the ones that bridges the gap betwix compact & semi-pro. Hoping to get something 7 MP or above with long zoom & it needs to have sequential shooting for £180-£230, any ideas folks?

ooh theres some really awesome pics on this thread!

I really want to take a photography class, I do scrapbooking/digi scrapping and I want to learn to take better pictures for my work. I planned on buying a DSLR but at the moment I have no camera at all as I broke my digi cam at TITP :P so need to replace that first as I like to take a camera everywhere with me.

nothing special but heres a few pics I rather like...

First few from DC...

This next one is the ceiling inside the Atlantis Casino in the Bahamas... bit dark but I really love the pattern. Would have been better if i'd got the whole circle in but I had a broken ankle at the time so I couldnt get any lower down to give wider view.

This one is Bahamas again and I like the way the trees kinda frame the view of the ship. Will be cropped before its used though to get rid of that silly woman who got in my way!

And another, just because I love the wildness of the West Coast :P

A good question. Without wanting to be a pain in the backside, what can I be expecting here? I look on a broad website like Jessops and see the bottom of the range is coming in at £290 for a Nikon D40 or slightly higher for a Sony Alpha A200. I don't mind paying that price or something a bit more like £350, or do you think that it is better to try for a higher spec camera, but try and get it second hand (and still be around that price). Basically I would rather get it right or not do it at all. If my budget doesn't stretch to 'something that can be grown into as experience grows, but not so basic that the urge to move up the ranks is almost immidate' then I'd rather not buy it, and save further until I can.

It all seems a bit of a minefield. Many thanks!

Purely because I'm not familiar with Sony's lens range I'd go for the Nikon out of those two (I've got a D40 myself and it's a great little camera). There's bags of room for learning with any SLR really so I wouldn't worry about that part. What you get with more expensive cameras is added functionality, more buttons and tweaks, better viewfinders etc. Some would also say it's more about the lens than the body and with the cheaper D40 you might have enough left over to throw in a 50mm/1.8 lens (about £85) which is a good little lens for learning technique. The D60 looks good too and you get a kit lens with anti-shake which is a very good plus.

Alternatively, the new Nikon D90 gets announced tomorrow (the first SLR with movie mode - yay!) so that should mean lots of cheap D80's around which is well-rated camera, bigger than the compact D40, better viewfinder etc.

Then there's canon, pentax, olympus.... :P

Just wanted to *bump* this thread as photography is a passion of mine and no-one has posted for a while. I went out tonight and took a few photos around Rochester and others must've taken some nice photos since the last post.

There are more on my Flick here but here are a few faves:
