Only item I've had knicked was a pair of flip flops from the porch of my tent in 2005...which seems a bit crazy seeing as it was knee deep mud over the whole weekend.

Had camp chairs knicked at V festival few years ago but seeing as half of 'Toxteth' and the shell suit massive from Scouse land attend not really surprising.

  • 1 year later...
I've been going since 1983 and only been robbed twice. Both times were in 1999 when theives made away with some booze, my mates binoculars and a pair of shades. That year was actually my favourate festival so it didn't spoil it for me. Our next door neighbours at the time caught someone trying to rob them as they were asleep. They managed to grab the thief and sit on him till the police arrived. He bit one of the police so they gave him a kicking. The police came back later on in the day to say the kid was being held in cell and hes covered himself in his own poo. Nice.

The only other things I've lost is by my own stupidity. Mainly leaving things outside my tent in the night (when you cant see them & forget they are there). Course, when you return in the morning they are gone.

I had my camp fire knicked in 1994 which was a bit strange. Me and a mate had brought loads of logs with us and we had a decent fire going. We went off wandering for an hour and when we returned there was just a few ashes remaining. I have no idea how they managed to knick the whole fire coz it was roasting!!

Your much less likely to get robbed nowadays though and a lot of the fields even have CCTV cameras!! The police also set up tents in such a way to tempt your would-be tent robber who'll get a nasty surprise if they have a go. I wonder if anyone has been nicked for inocently entering one of these tents? A mate of mine slept in someone elses tent a few years back (luckily the owners didn't return all night ). He didn't realise till the morning when he awoke & didn't recognise any of the gear in the tent.

I've been to Glasto 5 times and have only ever gone back to my tent to find it ransacked once and that was pre-SuperFence in '98.

What was interesting was what was taken and what was left behind - I had a Walkman, camera and several other expensive-ish items which they didn't even touch, but all my cigs and probably half the beer we had were nicked.

Generally tent-thieves aren't interested in personal items which can tie them to a crime and will usually just target things that they can sell on quickly and it's because of this that I try not to buy anything from the many 'rogue' traders who wander the site (hash truffles apart!).

Not had a problem, or really heard of any trouble, since the super-fence went up. I'm sure stealing does go on but seeing as it's virtually impossible to get in the festival without spending £160 on a ticket your average scally isn't going to bother.

Be sensible and follow the advice from the others and you'll be fine. Enjoy!

Concerning all these excuses from the scumbags about "sorry, thought it was my tent".

I dont buy that for half a second... heres why.

I have been absolutely hammered at Glastonbury and walked for hours and hours to find my tent. I have walked, staggered and fell over a few times getting through those fields but have never once come close to getting in a different tent by mistake.

Now I am not saying that mistakes dont happen, but if finding myself in that state and I did accidently go into the wrong tent - I know I would be so hammered that my speech would be all over the place and I doubt I would have the sense or ability to speak the immortal "sorry, thought it was my tent". I would probably just stumble off and dribble.

So if someone does get into your tent and they dont stink of ale or look high as a kite, I dont see any reason to believe it was a mistake.

i've never bothered with the lock ups and never had anything nicked. *touch wood* however this year half my booze, fags and cash are going in there along with a clean set of clothes. that way, even if i'm robbed AND flooded, the party can carry on without any pause. :P

no scally or weather is taking my glasto from me!

What would be the general consensus to catching someone red-handed and having a bit of a mild lynching session? I'm not talking a public hanging or flogging, more of a 'kangaroo court/citizens lynching/medieval stocks' affair.

If someone's caught in the act, I say they're fair game, maybe we could even host some kind of punishment on one of the smaller stages? Tar and feathering, throwing mud and manure to test out our aim for Lady Ga-Ga or just put them down the long drops. I reckon that would deter future would-be thieving bastards. Mob violence!!! It could be a spectator sport, maybe the BBC would like to cover it?

Alternatively just make sure you keep your peg mallet close by and a very bright maglight to blind the ruffians with.

Hello!

As a glastonbury virgin, and having heard horror stories about people having EVERYTHING stolen from their tent, I was just wondering what other people's experiences of stealing have been?

I don't plan on bringing anything very valuable, but was just wondering, since a few people have said that I should expect to lose everything and take nothing I care about at all!

Also what's the deal with lock-ups? Are they free? And how much can you put in? And are there big queues? Sorry for all the questions...

THANK YOU :P

I've been to Leeds for the last 2 years in a tent which has a door on each side and then bedrooms at each end. Each year somebody (when I've been fast asleep lashed as a tramp) has opened both external doors and walked through but not stolen or even moved anything. I wish they'd confused the large bottle of what looked like weak cider with them though, that would have left them with a nasty taste in their mouth!

I got done the 1st year i went in 99 but i was a bit worse for wears as I remember sitting up and asking who was there with no reply :( ...a few hours later I awake to find that bag with camera and all my cash was gone so was my m8s... 2007 we lost our tent tho not the 1 we were sleeping in...dont ask we got there late no room so had to spendweekends cash on a new smaller tent!

so since 99 only 2 bad experiences and on a positive note last yr bf dropped phone at stone circle 1/2 hr later as we walked back to tent my phone starts ringing I pull it out of my bag and say slighty confused to bf "ur calling me"... I answer to a young man saying phone found at stone circle and he'd wait for us! Said bf then goes of with a beer for the gent who'd rang and finds him sat waiting where we'd been earlier :(

so there are still good people out there and its not all doom and gloom :(

Cheers dvjj,

Has anyone actually left something in there on the Wednesday (for example) and collected Monday?

The reason I ask if that I always keep my money and camera on me at all times. But was thinking of taking my spare camera just in case I lose my current one (which I HAVE done in the past but kind people always hand it back).

Wanted to leave the spare camera in the lockups for a few days and only go for it before Monday morning if I need it. Is that reasonable?

I know this next question has probably been asked millions of times - but do the lockups get realyl busy on Monday morn?

Cheers for any help folks.

Here is a true story from 2003 . We camp in big ground and that year around 8 young scouse lads turned up with a

massive brand new tent and loads of other new stuff such as chairs They did not go see any bands but just did speed

and stella and hung round the tent arguing.

They upset quite a few people with them going at it 24 hours a day , but I found them really funny and made friends

with one of em. Got invited back to the tent. One accused me of being a bizzie but when I told him to shut the f**K

up in my best Yorkshire accent he soon came round.

By saturday morning they were all bored , the young lad came to my tent said they were leaving and that I could have

anything they had left.

The best thing was there 12 man tent , that we christened the "Scouser Tent " - and it did us great for loads of festivals

. We are now on our second and Scouser Tent 2 will be at Glasto and Leeds this year.

To this day I still laugh when I think of them arguing

"I treat you like a brother and you do this to me " - in a deep scouse accent

This went on for hours and I think it was over a spilt can of Stella or something !
