Check with your people what’s acceptable - one time when I couldn’t use my driving licence, I used an expired passport because Oxfam accept them if the photo is still like you.

A driving licence would be acceptable

The issues I've had with what is and what isn't acceptable ID lately...

Barclay's Bank would not accept my recently expired passport. Despite it being an official Home Office issued document with a photograph of my fizzog in it that is still clearly me. But they did accept my no photo at all old school paper driving licence. That's just daft logic isn't it?

Are you OK @marathonsteve? Your posts have seem a bit disjointed recently. You keep replying to yourself.

  3. Best thread for a while.

I also think the festival is crying out for a Maccie D’s, Burger King, Nando’s and Pizza Hut stand

f**k yeah! Sod paying a tenner for a burger that is mostly salad. Or a tenner for A SLICE of basic pizza. And the slow infiltration of the woke vegerati everywhere. Oh and having to queue for half an hour and missing half a set for the privilege of spending said tenner.

Not bothering with tickets until they book more 1970s prog rock bands, ageing white blokes in their 70s with long thinning straggly grey hair playing Moog synthesisers, double neck guitars. Especially bands still gigging  where there’s only one original member left alive. Believe me there’s plenty of them around.

Way better when it was just the place for the latest happening up and coming white boys with guitars. Why did it have to change and try to be all inclusive? Nobody's telling The Notting Hill Carnival that they have to book an OI! band for balance are they.

The easiest one is Park bar with Avalon Sat. Absolutely nothing to do. Even my Manager went Awol Just twiddling our Thumbs

Guessing that Park Bar you mention isn't the bar in The Park that is Stonebridge then?

Would be my nightmare bar placement Stonebridge. The furthest away from camp by my reckoning and certainly one of the most insanely busy on the Wednesday/Thursday. Unless you just meant it's just quiet on the Saturday @marathonsteve?

Was placed at The Bar on The Green in Williams Green last time I volunteered and the Thursday was full on non stop queues out of the door all day. And still non stop working most of the festival really. Was the spot for the Guilty Pleasures crowd.

The phrase "cushiest" is relative @Nuthugger

Cushiest bar job I was ever positioned in was also in Williams Green 2016. A bar that only sold three different types of Thatchers cider. We turned away more customers looking for other types of beverages than we actually served I'm sure. Metaphorically fighting over customers it was that quiet.

It really dragged being there though. Constantly thinking, "what a waste of time there's nothing to do and half of us could probably bunk off and go and watch Adele (or whatever)".

Since Thatchers dropped out it's been a Pimms tent so probably even less busy now if that's possible.

would have beeneasy back then, didn't get difficult until 2000.

It looked easy in '95 even before the fence came down. People climbing over all over the place.

A particular memory is of a bunch getting over next to the acoustic tent, looking rather overdressed and out of place for Glastonbury who were greeted with the heckle of "Henley Regatta is that way".

  6. Me and a friend discussed trying it around '89/'90. Nothing came of it.

nope, never have, even back in the day.

although in 1995 i may as well have snuck in - all the fence got pulled down at the stone circle and it essentially became a free festival that year.

our crew thought it would be fun to sit and chill but OUTSIDE the perimeter of the fence which was now laying flat.

it was not fun at all - i ended up falling asleep for a while and got a horrendously sun burned nose.

It seemed like I was the only one who paid that year. Must've been me and you then!

Me and mates paid in '95. At least five of us possibly more. Arrived at the top just as the fence was starting to be pulled down. My first festival and to small town me it felt like a full on riot was happening.

I’m in a similar position to @MrZigster. I’ve had the offer for Avalon/Calm. I’ve no problem with the shifts or being on my feet, but Bristol, and having to walk to the bus on Monday is killer.

I’ve done coach before, but stayed at Sticklinch so no tent to carry. I can make that up by carrying less booze, but it’s still a lot of stuff.

Against that is the risk of not going at all, which is a big one. Plus my friend and I were considering coach to increase our chances. So I obvs hadn’t ruled out Bristol or Walking with my kit.

Ah well, a few more days to decide.

I believe the deposit refund deadline is today mate.

Knowing your health record you should definitely qualify for reasonable adjustments 👍🏻

I no longer need to volunteer thankfully, I have a legitimate way in without having to jump through hoops if I don't get a ticket. This is the first time I am using it, and I realise I am truly fortunate! I hope you are lucky in the resale x

My Glastonbury Fairy Godmother. I got my first volunteering spot thanks to you and this site and these threads.

Would've been my fifth time volunteering and two decades without missing a festival.

My own bad that I missed T day this year.

    .

  10. Have enjoyed the interesting debate regarding Reasonable Adjustments versus just being an older and/or unfit lazy git.

It is with deep regret that with the deposit deadline looming I have just emailed Hannah to withdraw my Avalon spot because I have become the latter. I'm just not fit enough to carry the bare minimum necessary camping gear to and fro without a sack trolley these days, and you're not really meant to take them on the coach. Space is limited.

That and the whole new (for me) getting to Bristol malarkey nightmare that I have whinged enough about already in this thread. Plus the additional moved goalpost this year of having to traipse across the whole site on the Monday to get to the return coaches.

Decided I just can't risk the risk of not being able to manage it all and getting seriously stranded somehow. I'm fine standing for long periods so completing shifts is not an issue. It's just the getting there and back.

Rather pissed off that this could all be solved if I could only drive myself to site rather than the ridiculousness having to drive past the site to catch a coach that then doubles back on my route. Green it is not. Would willingly pay going price or more for a parking pass.

I totally get the reasoning. I'm sure most people would prefer to make their own way there and a couple of hundred(?) or so more cars would be a logistical nightmare. It is what it is.

Will still be trying in the resale.

@StoneCircleI honestly don't know how you still do it. Respect.

Yes plan is to have a Monday night Tow and Hitch meet again for whoever from efests is on site on the Monday. I'll post more details closer to the festival and have also set up a WhatsApp group in the past.

Definitely a class system when it comes to volunteers. Avalon/ex Shelter aren't on site 'till the Tuesday. Personal transport allowed close to quiet campsite bourgeoisie you lot are. /s lol.

Congrats! It sounds like your preferred choice but I was just wondering why you prefer this over Oxfam?

    My thoughts precisely.

Stewarding is way more important than bar work in the greater scheme of things and that's maybe why Oxfam volunteers get a way better deal (imo) than the Avalon/ex-Shelter/Bar people (that aren't WBC).

Quieter camp site, can bring their own cars or even campers and subsequently none of that having to get your arse to Bristol for stupid o'clock on the Tuesday and similar hassle with the return journey on the Monday.

Haven't done it (Avalon/Shelter) since they removed the London coach option. Now they've moved the goalposts yet again this year (having to possibly trek across (or possibly even circumnavigate) the entire site to get to and from the (not as favourable as Oxfam's) camp site) I'm pondering whether I'm actually physically capable of doing it this year with all of the added changes.

I seriously struggled the last time I volunteered. Even without the get to Bristol and now possible trek across site malarkey. Hopefully the line-up will be announced before the cancellation deadline. If most of the names baffle me I might just decide f**k it and take my chances in the resale as I honestly feel it is far less physically demanding going as a punter than as a volunteer for me these days.

Thanks, and fair question! It's just so I can camp with my sister (and hopefully work same shifts) as she also got a place with Avalon. Several of us tried for Oxfam but I was the only one who got a spot - both their 'general' batches went in nanoseconds. Hoping we get kind shifts but fairly relaxed about it. We've both been thinking of volunteering for a while - nice to have the guaranteed camping spot, food and showers!

From the sounds of it we may have a trek across site with our stuff though...

Fair enough and understandable. As stated above it's that possible trek across site that is tormenting me.

I think with Oxfam it definitely pays to be on a busy pedestrian gate rather than quiet location that has very little traffic and therefore little to do. I did my first Oxfam volunteering last year and I was on VG5 for the 6am to 2pm and 2pm to 10pm shift and a 'pedestrain crossing' between PGB and the Oxfam camp for my overnight shift. The VG5 shifts had traffic going through but there were loads of us and most of the work is handled by the dedicated [paid] vehicle team so there was a lot of standing about not doing much. The overnight shift at the 'pedestrian crossing' was deathly boring - barely any traffic to protect pedestrians from and as we were outside the fence there weren't loads of people coming through anyway. I'd much rather have been stationed somewhere much busier, but I was just glad to be there to be honest.

The being there is all! Am I right?

There's a gradient between a full on busy and a f**k all at all really happening shift. Have experienced both extremes with bar work. They both have their merits. The shifts pass quicker when you don't have time to think but it may really knacker you out.

To counteract a nothing really much happening shift possibly load up on podcasts or TV shows? That's how I get through the queue on the Tuesday night as a punter.

Maybe a few people could email and suggest being dropped at old drop off on the Tues? Seems like they are still in talks atm so may be a good time.🙂

I thought exactly the same thing. When I've got five minutes. Never known any issues on the Tuesday. Could sometimes take an hour or so to get off site on Monday and were often late getting in but never heard of the coaches not being able to get in at all until last year. Wonder what changed/went wrong last year for that to suddenly have happened.

Last two years - couple of hundred metres outside Gate C (outside the fence), behind SE corner as magnet says. Nice little spot.

Close proximity to Gate C I guess but otherwise no. it's not a nice little spot.

Way too close (read next door) to SE corner. Gets marshy rather than muddy in a bad year (I was pretty much camped in a marshy puddle 2016 (still probably my favourite year though)).

Much preferred the old spot which is where Oxfam are now (iirc). And they get to bring their cars. There are different classes of volunteering at Glastonbury (I concede that stewarding is way more vital than bar work in the great scheme of things).

    2 hours ago, Tr234 said:

Is it difficult getting to sleep with it being so close to SE corner?

Personally very, very, very difficult. If you've got an eleven o'clock shift you'll be lucky to get four or five hours.

    2 hours ago, Talcroft said:

I never struggle to sleep at Glasto... Fresh air all day, 25k+ steps a day, dancing til 5am, with the addition of an 8 hour shift thrown in - it could be bombed and I'd sleep through it.

That said, I am a very big advocate for optimising the sleep set up: blackout tent, huge (extra deep) air bed, decent ear plugs - the mouldable wax ones are the best. I do that at festivals anyway even when I'm not working them.

Do all that. Plus a Zopiclone sometimes. Doesn't help. Double doesn't help that I'm a bit of an insomniac anyway.

    2 hours ago, deepkittycaz said:

Our lot are now camping by Silver Hayes. It's ok as long as you use earplugs. When we were by Arcadia, that was worse with the vibration from the flamethrowers!

And there's me moaning. Pisses me off this. Volunteers help to put the show on and it seems a lot of us are dangerously sleep deprived. I know I was the last time I volunteered. I probably do that through choice when I have a ticket, but when I have an eight hour shift on my feet to do I'd rather not have to.

Someone posted on bottom of previous page that you would have to walk through the site

Hopefully they will be sensible about this and only do the pick up on Monday from Yellow. There were no problems getting to the old drop off point on the Tuesday last time were there?

  15. Deposit paid. Just going to have to get fit now.

I'm wondering. If they decide to drop us off at yellow does that mean we will have to go around the site rather that through it to get to the camp? Or, will they do as done previously, stop elsewhere to get wristbanded and then go to drop off point?

Only about half hour, you’ll be fine as shortlisted and applied, May just only be Hannah from Avalon reviewing all profiles are complete correctly before sending across the deposit page but I wouldn’t fret as was really straightforward, Not sure about this requirements however!

So did you get sent a deposit page link via email then?
