  1. We are sorry to announce that Leicester’s Summer Sundae Weekender will not be returning in 2014.

Having taken a hiatus for 2013, we have worked hard on a number of different options to try and make the festival viable moving forward. Sadly we have found that running a city-centre event of this size with such an array of entertainment and professional production standards is just not possible in the current economic climate.

Summer Sundae has always been subsidised, even in very successful years (namely 2006 and 2010). In recent years Concert Clinic has underwritten cumulative financial losses, and unfortunately a point has been reached where the festival is no longer financially viable for either party.

We are very proud of what we have achieved over the years, from a one day event in 2001 through to the 5 stage, 6000 capacity event with camping and all forms of entertainment, Summer Sundae has provided opportunities for 100s of artists from the region as well as internationally known names, and has left us with some brilliant memories.

Thank you to all those that have supported the festival and attended the event over its 12 year history, we couldn't have come this far without you.

  2. After much consideration we have decided it’s best for Summer Sundae Weekender to take a year off and as such there will be no Summer Sundae at De Montfort Hall in 2013.
We have taken this decision against the backdrop of a very difficult year for festivals in 2012. The Olympics, the recession and the weather have created a perfect storm leaving many independent festivals struggling to survive.
We feel it’s a good idea to take the next year to look at different models and fresh ideas to bring the festival back for 2014 and beyond.
Meanwhile we wish De Montfort Hall a Happy 100th Birthday for 2013, and understand that they will be celebrating this in style next year. We hope to see you all again in 2014.

Number of stages: it became apparent over the last two years that the Rising Stage was empty most of the day. Audience did not stick around between bands and that meant that bands played to less people. We did feel that 5 stages was one too many for our size of audience (5000 +/- per day) Festivals significantly larger than ours tend to work OK with 3-4 music stages.

re number of stages: Phrased and Confused used the bandstand last year. That was placed in the garden this year.

The layout of the Village would have been different if he had not had all the rain in July and early August. This left the site with two large areas of standing water; one in the village and one at the bottom of the main arena. In the village the water was where the Big Top stage was supposed to be, so to deal with this we brought the fence in and then had to squeeze the bar and Watering Hole all closer together. The mainstage managed to cover most of the other "pond" which was caused by bad drainage. We covered the area with sand, but that did not help with the smell! Sorry, first complaint I have read of the smell.

Decent lager: don't drink it much myself. Please advise what you consider a decent lager. I thought Becks was OK?

  4. Thanks Orly and co.

Mickey, not sure about your maths. We were only one stage "lighter" this year, whilst we had an extended programme in Big Top and De Montfort Hall. Over the last two years we found that whilst a 1200 cap Rising Stage was impressive it was very expensive considering it was not used half the day. As for number of acts: We had a similar number of acts to most other years.

Hence the experiment with the Big Top/Into the Wild and Watering Hole. The idea was that the areas would be connected in a row and encourage people to stick around the area and go from one stage to another with the flip/flopping bill. We had to change the site plan 10 days before the event due to a large area of standing water exactly where the Big Top stage was supposed to be. Hence the 3 areas (Big Top, real ale bar and Watering Hole stage) being more bunched up. It looked and felt fine on the Wednesday when the structures were up, however with the two stages closer together and the bar taking up most of the low slung tent there was more sound bleed and bar chat (vs the Watering Hole stage) We've had a lot of positive comments about the seats and floor in the Big Top.

It has to be said that Leicester City Council no longer subsidise the festival to the extent they did 4 - 5 years ago. We do still receive some support, but it's been myself and my fellow directors that have picked up the sizeable deficit for the festival over the last two years. Pick any recent year, with the exception of 2010, and it's posted a six figure deficit. It is depressing reading emails like Mickey's.

It's been a tough year for festivals. Ask Vince Power (Benicassim, Hop Farm etc) or the individuals behind events like Nova, Wychwood, Larmer Tree, Rhythm Festival, No Direction Home/End of The Road, Green Man OR anybody involved in catering, production or other.

I have the feeling that next year's festival calendar is going to look a lot different to this years.

    Rob

  6. Thanks for various comments about the line up. As long as I remember we've always had positive and negative comments about quality of overall bill or choice of headliners. Some people actively dislike some of the pop acts we've booked over the last 3-4 years (and some of our younger audience think we could have booked more pop acts this year....) I personally think we have a great mix of headliners and "mid-bill" acts this year. The mid-bill/ undercard at Summer Sundae has always been strong, but IMO this year's is one of the strongest.

With two weeks to go I do find myself reminiscing about just how much "traffic" we/Summer Sundae created around this time last year through this forum and f/b with that alcohol announcement. So just to underline, if there was any doubt, that the audience can bring in their own alcohol to the festival this year.

    as terms and conditions state:

Ticket holders are permitted to bring food and drink including alcohol onto site, provided it is for personal consumption

    only.

    no glass please.

And do remember we have some great bars with reasonably priced real ale, cocktails etc

    cheers Rob

  14. Will try to answer best I can:

    1. What's the vibe like? laid back.

    2. What sort of age are the punters? 6 - 60

    3. What's the capacity? 6000- 7000. Main arena 4500, indoor hall 2000

    4. When are tickets likely to sell out? early bird weekend ticket sale will stop on 19th March. Limited number of day tickets will go on sale in May. Difficult to predict when full price weekend tickets will sell out.

    5. Are many more bands expected to be announced? 2nd wave of announcements on 14th March/tomorrow. Expect one or two more announcements in April, which means the full bill will have been revealed by May.

    6. What's the camping like? City park, adjacent to festival site.

We went early with announcements this afternoon due to them being leaked!

    Next announcements within a month.

  16. In response to Lee. Hope that we are in a position to announce the first acts late February/Early March. And I believe those announcements will assure you that we are not going "deeper into the teen arena". Whilst the eclectic mix of 2010 worked (sold out), last year's experiment with M***Y did not. We're going to keep to eclectic.

Regarding the new "teen" ticket: we've responded to a number of adult/parent requests on this, as well as 17 year olds . Other festivals offer a similar ticket, which makes it cheaper for a family with a 16 or 17 olds. £60 is still a significant amount of money for somebody most likely at school or college or other.

  17. Hi All,

We're all knackered from a the weekend. We thought it went very well.

Saturday was our quietest day, however box office figures just in confirm that we had similar crowds to 2007 and 2008.

Before we can announce 2012 dates we are going to take a few weeks assessing this year, hold some discussions with Leicester Council and DMH etc.

All I can say for now is that I would like to see more Summer Sundae Weekenders as enjoyable as the one we've just had. It was a really special vibe this year.

Thanks for all those that came.

  18. We have decided to remove the alcohol restrictions for this year. We are sorry that we announced these restrictions so late in the day.

We’d like you to enjoy the festival in the manner you had originally planned and we would now like to concentrate on delivering a great event. We look forward to seeing you this coming weekend.

Rob and the Summer Sundae Weekender festival team.
