That was an interesting read, and goes someway to explaining the scale of the 'beast' that is Glastonbury Festival.

However, is the sample (see below) mathematically an OK sample number wise? I have no idea. Just asking, is all.

The report was based on a survey of 643 Festival-goers – interviewed face-to-face at the 2023 Festival – plus an online survey of 354 Festival staff and 148 volunteers, as well as 30 telephone interviews with local businesses

  3. An Economic Impact Summary for 2023 has been added to the GF website.

    Quote

Since it began as a small-scale event on a dairy farm in 1970, Glastonbury has become one of the world’s biggest festivals. In 2023, more than 140,000 ticket-holders enjoyed entertainment at over 100 stages across five days, in the heart of Somerset. Celebrating diversity in culture, Glastonbury has become a place of joy and discovery for attendees, but the Festival has also proven to have a positive influence beyond the arts.

In 2023 we commissioned a report to measure the Festival’s economic impact, in both the immediate local economy and the wider economic environment. The report, carried out by research specialists Fourth Street, found Glastonbury Festival to have a significant positive economic impact both nationally and in Somerset, generating around £168 million of income for UK businesses including £32 million for businesses based in Somerset.

  11. Somerset Council had the Glastonbury Festival Scrutiny meeting last Wednesday (13th December).
Point 6 on the agenda here: https://democracy.somerset.gov.uk/ieListDocuments.aspx?CId=203&MId=2498

Includes recommendation from the Council to the festival.

    Summary from the County Gazette

    Quote

Dave Coles, the council’s head of regulatory services, said that this year’s event “overall was very well-run”, with the majority of the feedback from the 2022 festival being taken on board and acted upon.

However, he said that “continuous improvement” was needed in light of the festival “evolving” over the last few year.

Mr Coles and his team have produced a number of recommendations for how the festival could be improved next year – including:

    • Review the decision to remove Row Mead from the public camping area
    • Assess the crowd densities at the Glade crossroads, which may impede movement from the south-east of the site to the south-west
    • Develop a procedure for people bringing and removing chairs to watch acts at the Pyramid stage
    • Ensure all food and drinks vendors display relevant allergen information
    • Improve the walkway to Worthy View to minimise “steep bends” and ensure its safety during muddy weather
    • Explore further proactive measures to “help address excessive loudness and low frequency noise” associated with the festival
    • Provide additional toilets and water refill stations throughout the site to reduce queues
    • Introduce a “reporting system” to ensure those found entering the festival ground with “prohibited substances” are not permitted to return the following year

Councillor Gwilym Wren, who chaired the committee meeting, praised the council’s licensing team for ensuring that there were relatively few issues with the running of the festival.
