If there’s a secret slot in the JP or Park then I’m sure that’ll remain the case rather than them being moved to Other; I’m sure there’s no shortage of indie fodder type acts they could call in to fill in a third down Other slot if Fender has moved.

At this point yeah, but nature of shows at the moment is stuff is cancelled because of illness/positive covid tests. I can see some of those TBAs being booked on a flexible basis for if acts drop out within a few days/weeks of the fest.

Not gonna lie, £15 for a fully charged battery pack each day is quite appealing compared to spending £40 on a 20,000mAh pack. Especially when I'll walk pretty much past the EE tent from camp every day.

If Glasto is the only time you ever camp its worth it. If you might ever need a power bank with more than a single charge in in the future you're better off buying a larger one now.

  3. I've never found Three to be problematically bad. I mean, yeah maybe it took a while to update my Facebook feed, but my text messages and WhatsApp stuff came through fine - I wasn't missing missing messages from friends on site about meeting up or whatever. It was just a bit slow.

Not sure about the gap on the Saturday from 6:30pm to 10:30pm. I would had thought there would be stuff on

Yeah if that's the full line-up it's a bit odd as Friday is the only day with anything on during the day. Last year it ran from midday-6am every day (except Thursday)

If they are stressed it will just be part and parcel of the normal stresses and strains of running a festival. I would say because of COVID they are probably more prepared for this than ever. I am sure they have plenty of backup plans ready to go. If they said TBA on that slot for a while nobody would mind. I suspect plenty of acts are playing lower down than expected and would be able to change.

With thousands of acts on the bill they will expect a couple of cancellations like this every year.

Yeah I think they're likely to have something in place. Positive COVID tests among performers/crew are hitting a lot of tours. I'd expect to lose at least 3 acts from that initial poster by the time of the festival. I'd imagine they have a few acts on reserve - though maybe not at the level people are suggesting here.

  6. For what it's worth, Dave's games in Brighton are among the best in the country. As a young middle-class gentrifier I've done a few hundred games and have every confidence this'll be good - am genuinely quite excited to see it.

Point being, this isn't just some bloke with a "wacky" idea - there's background and experience here.

(There was a mini-escape room in Green Futures in 2019 also)

I'm not sure it is.  Perhaps not the most popular or well known, but "objectively best"?  The musical evidence doesn't seem to back that up.

Well it's weird because there is no "objectively best" really, but I guess my point is that if there was, lots of the female acts that should be in that group aren't, because they gave up early or never really started at all because it was so much harder to get there.

In 25 years I’ve never looked round and thought “this place is too white!”. Did Jay Z/Kanye/Stormzy have any impact on ethnic quotients? Can’t say I noticed but then I missed them all cos I was elsewhere listening to someone who’s skin colour never even registered to me, not feeling under-represented at all.

Don't disagree with your post, but will say as a white guy that's grown up in and around Birmingham, when I first went to the festival in 2003 it's not that I thought the festival was "too white" but it definitely felt "very white". I think the acts you mentioned have had a huge impact, but it's been from having less than 1% non-white people to maybe about 5%.

So if that was the aim, it's worked to an extent.

For clarity one last time: I’m not against women, or women in music, or I want less women on the bill. I said to one poster, that if the best musicians were 80% women and the festival punters was 80% women, I wouldn’t give a hoot.

But if the best musicians were 80% women, would you not wonder why?

That's the thing, if you look purely on merit, I'd say there are more men and male-fronted bands in that top section. But that makes no sense right? There's nothing inherent about being a man that makes you better at music. So why are men so massively over represented in music?

There's lots of reasons, but one of the big ones is the opportunities afforded to them. They're more likely to be taken seriously, they get given more opportunities, and new people coming up know that, which is why more men give it a go in the first place than women.

By actively booking more women, you provide more opportunities and therefore help to very slowly address that issue.

Is the cost of that that you're not booking the objectively best acts that you can in every slot (as far as musical ability can be seen as objective) - yes. Does that matter as long as the acts are still good? Not really. And is it worth it? Yes.

Is this above reasoning regarding links to sites that sell things why my post asking about people's choices of ear protection was deleted, and even my account (copperbottom) was banned as a result? Just logged in to see what people had said, presumably some posting links, and found out I'd been banned from the whole website - apologies if I'd unintentionally committed a ban-worthy offence with that one...

I think maybe the trolls are just mass reporting things in order to ruin the site and it's working.

It's pretty difficult for any thread on "what should I buy for X?" to work without links to the things you can buy. And if the standard becomes just naming retailers and brands instead then it also doesn't work because if someone is really posting "What brand of X should I buy, I found these and they look quite good" while actually having a commercial involvement in what they're posting... they can exploit that in the same way, as people get in to the habit of just looking them up manually.

It reminds me of the Overclockers UK forum, where you can't link to or even mention competing retailers, so everyone speaks in code "this monitor is only £399 at the providers of Britain's national cuisine" (Currys).

  11. I think if the trolly is between all six of you and everything is on the trolly you'll be fine as long as the driver is reasonable (which isn't a given but in most cases is fine) - just make it clear that yes, it's large but it's for six of you all on the same coach.

But if you've got that, then everyone also has a massive rucksack and bags of beer or such then you're going to struggle.

  12. Instagram updates:

Paul Currie - Summerhouse and Cabaret

    Bunny - Outside circus stage

    Natural Theatre Company - Walkabouts

Also seems like the outdoor trapeze is still there (with daily workshops)

Dom Joly is doing the Cabaret ten on Friday, so I stand corrected on that - had assumed it was an Astrolabe booking.

Non alcoholic cider on site? Is that a thing?

The cider bus sells apple juice, if that's what you mean. Not seen any bars do anything like the 0% Rekorderlig or such though.

This might (most probably will) come across as a very stupid question , but how ‘acoustic’ is the acoustic stage? Like is it just the acts with a guitar etc. or is it a little bit closer to a full band or somewhere inbetween?

Not a stupid question at all, the answer is it's not "acoustic" at all. It's just a name for the tent. I can't remember the last time I saw an act actually play acoustic on there.

But there are also live performances in many of the other bars not labelled e.g. West Holts bar, Bread & Roses, whatever replaced the Fluffy Rock Cafe, etc

Most of those smaller ones aren't programmed. Bread & Roses is weird as they've always had stuff on but only the last few fests have they actually been in the programme. It's a weird distinction between "official" and "unofficial" venue.

It’s both and saying it’s just idiot men is naive at best. If there’s such a big queue that people are going elsewhere then it’s very much a problem of provision of facilities.

The problem is still the men in that case. It's just that they're impatient, rather than idiotic.

I don't disagree that more facilities would help, but it's a shame that it comes to that rather than people just having a bit of patience.

There seems to be a merging/ coalescing of stages this year - with less of them, but bigger capacity. Thinking of SE Corner/ Silver Hayes/ Glade specifically.

Do we think change is a result of the increased capacity on site (maybe a safety thing?). Or maybe it is a cost thing (less money for security/ set up and maybe reduces the number of performers?), as a result of the pandemic? Or something else?

EDIT - Just thinking, it could also be as simple that dance music is getting more popular on site year after year I guess?

Also possibly acts that would have previously done it for a free ticket as they want to be at the festival not being able to justify that after two years with no money - it's basically a holiday if there's paying work available elsewhere that weekend and it's hard for many to be taking a holiday right now, especially as the summer season just starts to get going for the first time in three years.

Anyone got any thoughts on best ways to self-shower now that single use plastics are banned?

They're not banned are they? Just the stalls banned from selling them, can still bring them in yourself - not sure how you're showering with them though!

Are you thinking of 2011? It was in the normal spot in 2014.

Yeah maybe, when it was the Spirit of 71 stage (so I guess technically not the Glade)

  21. 3 hours ago, Johnnyseven said:

It came from a rumour I heard.

The Glade has been in the same place next to the Other Stage for 20 years, if sound bleed was such an issue why wasn't it moved years ago?

It's weirder than that as it was moved to where it appears to be this year in 2014, then moved back.
