Not particularly helpful but my best glasto memories have always been unplanned and from when we decided to just wander around instead of rushing across site to catch a specific band.

I don't think we were at the official "paint fight" but someone did give us all a bunch of the paint powder at the pyramid stage and we had our own paint fight while they recorded it, supposedly on a high speed camera. Never found of if they really did record it but we had a great time.

We also stumbled upon a full on wrestling ring one night and it was incredible, honestly don't think it'll be topped.

I can definitely recommend not to waste time on "legendary" glastonbury things. Last year I made the effort to go to the "secret" piano bar as I'd never been in ten years. I gave up after queueing for an hour and a half, what a waste of time, and full of people who just wanted pictures for Instagram (and a vice journalist)

    ^^^^This 100%

I've never been to the piano bar for this reason.  Would rather do things that will be fun rather than stuff to just have said I've done it/got a photo of it.

I used to love NYC Downlow, had some great times the first few years it was there but won't ever go again now because it is just a massive queue of people going because it is something people think they should go to. It really isn't worth it.

  2. You may not find this helpful, but I always approach every Glasto as if it is my last because I don't think you can ever take it for granted you'll get tickets again for a number of reasons.  sorry if that is a bit "right on".

I just try and enjoy the stuff that is meaningful to me rather than get caught up in FOMO.  There will always be loads of things that people talk about that they loved and sounds really cool but you can't do them all.

The magic for me has always happened when I haven't planned it or sought it out (with the exception of music acts you have really wanted to see being great).

So the things I would do at my last Glastonbury is just savour the time there and go to my favourite places again and that would include some time looking at the festival from up near the park and taking it all in and dancing with my friends.

  3. There is usually a reason behind unannounced slots - either the act is tied into contracts with other festivals/gigs or they want to get some promotion from the press exposure to promote something.

  4. Closer to the time it is worth considering if acts have got things like tours or albums that will get a promotional boost from getting the press.  I don't think any of the above acts have got that have they?

My Keane story is that the guitarist Dominic went to college with my wife (well, think he was doing engineering or something, but he was in Trinity Singers with her). Eventually he got fed up going back and forth between Ireland and England to rehearse. Felt the band weren’t going anywhere, so he quit. They wrote Everybody’s Changing about the whole episode and well, sure the rest is history!

And my Keane story is that I was friends with and in a very short lived band with their current guitarist Jesse in Bristol in 2000- 2001. He is a really nice guy and massively talented musician.  I know after I moved away from Bristol he was a session and touring musician for loads of bands before joining Keane full time.  But yeah,  they've had a guitarist for ages. But it is always a reminder to me that just because you don't dig a band's music doesn't mean the people in it aren't nice people (or massively talented).

Williams Green was a replacement for the Queens Head.

Which in turn was previously known as The Crown, when it was in the Other Stage field.

The spot across from the Meeting Point was previously occupied by the Left Field.

That is how I remember it as well.

  7. Bill Ryder-Jones is excellent - his last album is in my favourite of the year so far.  hopefully he get's added to the Glasto lineup.

Also, Madmadmad are really good live and Gaffa Tape Sandy are good as well.

  8. yeah I got a ticket for O2 in November as well - I'm really looking forward to it.  BCNR are support as well so that is nice.  I think the new song is great and can't wait to hear it live.

Surprised everyone thinks this is going to be insanely busy. He’s struggled to sell out a few dates on his tour. I’m a big fan but I don’t think he has the wide fan base that people think, along with it being an early slot in the day for this kind of music. Definitely won’t be Wet Leg busy

yeah, I don't think it will be Wet Leg busy - they had some really big singles with massive radio play and loads of press at the point they played Glasto.  Barry Can't Swim hasn't crossed over into the mainstream like that.

There's no way Levels would be safe - it was completely rammed for much small names this year!

Nobody would suggest to put a Reading/Leeds band headliner on say Park - but because he's a dj people think these kind of sets on Levels etc would be ok

It needs to be something can be closed off, or super late at night and lowkey

Temple was a crush scenario last year, I was right up in it and it was really quite scary. They need to make sure its not leaked to everyone again - his second set wasn't and seemed to go alright in Platform 23 i think it was

I think it is just that Levels is easy to fence off and control because it is enclosed.  I was there for Fatboy Slim and Nia Archives last year and they had really good crowd control.  I appreciate that he is much bigger than those acts though I was thinking unannounced.

But you are right they shouldn't put someone of Fred's draw in venue where it could lead to a crush.

  11. I would be so excited if he plays a random DJ set somewhere.  Definitely seems possible.  Hopefully either somewhere that can handle it properly like Levels or with good crowd control like the Temple where it can't get overcrowded and you are either there for it or you haven't got a hope of getting in.

I've said before but I think if he maintains the trajectory after Reading/Leeds with a big album then next time he is back at Glasto will be headlining.

  12. interesting that he is a bit underpowered live. I agree that he hasn't got that much music for a full set so it isn't going to be wall to wall bangers.  Probably unfair to compare to Fred Again because he had 3 albums of material + some big singles when he was playing Glasto last year.   He probably benefitted from covid in that regard.

  13. His album is great and really looking forward to catching his set. I feel like it will be a bit early for him to be honest but quite happy he won't clash with some of the acts on later on so on balance it works for me. I hope the park isn't too packed so can have a little dance.

Looking at their recent Festival setlists and taken into account new songs I expect they will have the top 14 and then 2 from the lower list and then maybe 1/2 newer/random ones.

Yeah that looks like it works for festivals.

I really want Deep End (Paul's in pieces) from the last album.

But getting the set right is the problem to mass appeal. Their fans (including me) like the fact that they throw in album tracks/deep cuts and as much as I loved seeing the one night at Ally Pally that I went to, I also thought I missed out on some fav tracks on the other night.

Not sure they have a greatest hits but doubt that if they came out and played there best tracks, most easy listening ones, they would pick up loads of new fans who might not even know who they are but just watch what ever comes on the BBC coverage. However, are they the sort of band to do that? or will they curate a set their fans will like but will leave others wondering what all the fuss is about.

Oh yeah, for sure, I don't think I could tell you what the right set would be, but for headlining the other stage at glasto it is closer to the first night at ally pally than the second one imho. Although mega fans will always want the deeper cuts.

I reckon they'll get the balance the right. They have so much to choose from now and I love that they mix up the setlists so much.

  16. I'm so excited that I'll get to finish glasto with one of my favourite bands.

    2 thoughts I had.

    1. Given that phoebe bridgers guests on songs with SZA and The National does that mean she might turn up live? I think it is unlikely but outside chance.

    2. If The National play their cards right with the "right " setlist and performance they won't have a better opportunity to cross over to a broader audience in the UK. I think they are either as big as a medium size band can be (or as big as a cult band can be). With good BBC coverage they might just take it up to the next level.
