  1. The Courteeners on before Phoenix with a pretty early afternoon Other Stage slot? Surely a band that can sell out the GMEX (or whatever its called these days), Brixton Academy etc should be higher? Maybe their second album tanked but I seem to remember it going top 10.

  2. I emailed Frank through his website about his Leftfield slot and this is his reply (sent back to me within an hour). What a top man :P

    hey matt

thanks for the mail. alas at this stage i know as much as you do about

leftfield. billy said we'd collaborate somehow. but that's the extent of

my knowledge. hm. we shall see. til then

  3. Judging by 2004, this won't be the case for the vast majority.

That's what happened at Glasto in 2004. There was even footage on the BBC of Glastonbury punters saying "Nah, we're not upset. It's Glasto innit. We're off to have a drink and have a party."

  4. I am big football fan - in fact the only Glastonbury I've missed in recent years was 2004 because I was in Portugal for 10 days watching the football (including Eng vs France and Eng vs Switzerland alongside 6 other games).

    However, my view is this:

If England win then there will be at least one and potentially (unlikely though) three more important games to come (quarter, semi and final). Nobody will remember the last 16 game during Glastonbury - the only exception to this being if it is something like a 4-0 win vs the Germans.

If England lose then I will have been glad to have missed it, especially if its another penalties exit, as it could be a downer on the whole weekend. My mate is huge rugby fan and we watched the Lions game last year - the close defeat put him in a foul mood for a good few hours.

So I am taking the view that if I can see it without missing anything good or having to go too far out of my way then I'll probably catch some or all of it. Any clashes or major hassle (huge crowds in a small cinema field for example) then I don't bother.

As a separate point on the fans issue - I have travelled around Europe watching international football and usually try and avoid England games (we got the games I mentioned above in the lottery draw when they were Team A2 vs Team A4 etc).

This is partly because everything shuts down when the England fans are in town so you don't get to do much in the place where you are but also because there is a nasty edge to a reasonable minority (but I would still say minority).

The only teams whose fans travel in any numbers are England, Holland and the Scandanavian teams and I have had some brilliant times watching Holland, Sweden and Norway games with their passionate fans - its important to note that the fans of those three countries drink more alcohol than even England fans so its not just the drink.

As an example of the differences here is a short tale:

I was in Arham in Holland in June 2000 to watch Norway vs Slovenia. In a town of 30,000 people there were over 40,000 Norwegian fans. We watched pitcures on the TV in our hotel of England fans rioting in Charleroi and then went and drank beer with a massive good natured Norwegian crowd (very Glastonbury like in terms of chatting to randoms, buying people drinks, helping each other out, banter etc). A win would have sent them through to the next round and a draw would have been enough if Spain lost in the other game. They drew 0-0 and when our game finished Spain were losing 3-2 to Yugoslavia. We stayed in the stadium waiting for the stadium announcer to tell us the final result of the other game (not many mobile phones then!). He then told us that Spain had scored two injury time goals and Norway were eliminated. If it had been England then the place would have been ripped apart but they just shrugged their shoulders and headed for the bars. A great night followed with everyone drinking until they fell over with not a hint of trouble that we saw. Had a soft spot for Norway ever since!

  5. Saw him at the Roundhouse last night - incredible. He also said that he'd be back in the summer (he's off touring to Europe and the US next) because he was 'doing all the festivals' - so fingers crossed.

  6. Ben Folds - Other Stage 2008

Bringing some random woman (her out of Dresden Dolls I think) out and letting her do a couple of songs of her album that he had produced - we came to see you, not her!! Only partially redeemed by finishing with Landed and Bitches.

Oh... and it was the Other Stage which generally sucks the life out of any band (Elbow excepted)

Oh Oh....and it was raining... :P

  7. Could booking a big name comedien be a planned move to give them more flexibility on the Saturday for the football. A comedien can just wander on and do 10 mins to two hours depending on what is required, no gear to set up so can be changed at short notice.

So you leave either/or slots in the Pyramid Stage schedule for the Saturday and Sunday timings when the England game could be. Then you plan in someone desperate enough for exposure to be mucked around like say Editors or White Lies or Keane who are told you might be on Saturday at 7.30pm or you might be on Sunday at 5pm. Then you book Peter Kay and tell him the same thing.

    Probably a rubbish idea - soz. I'm bored. :P

  8. Big rush this morning to get my tickets for this 'strictly one-off event'. Delighted when I succeeded. Bit disappointed that a second date has been added within 2 hours and probably bloody more to follow....ggggrrrrrrrrrrr.

I know this is a selfish attitude but ho hum.

  9. Putting aside the fact that the original basis on which this thread is based sounds total hogwash and there is no way any conversation was had with RW about Glasto, I'd see him if it was true.

Here's a scenario to make most of you sick in your mouths this Friday lunchtime:

    • RW really does get asked to play

    • Decides he wants to do something to reflect the fact that its the 40th Anniversary

    • So only plays stuff off his new album plus the following covers:

    • 'the man who sold the world'

    • 'solsbury hill'

    • 'cleaning windows'

    • 'the whole of the moon'

    • 'shipbuilding'

    • 'debaser'

    • 'dktr faustus'

    • 'little fluffy clouds'

    • 'one way'

    • 'common people'

    • 'scooby snacks'

    • 'chime'

    • 'idiotique'

    • 'seven nation army'

  10. Last year I said they were playing - cos I got to hear that their management said they were going to play - but they didn't take the booking in the end cos they weren't ready as a band to play live.

This year I've heard (from an excellent source) that Luke Steele has been telling people that they're playing.

So hopefully it's true this year.

  11. Sorry if this idea was mentioned somewhere between pages 21 and now but gave up after half an hour.

Anyway, if a basic principle from the Eavis' was to leave the festival as it is, which is sensible as the infrastructure planning is probably very complex and planning for any event that may or may not happen and may or may not be really popular is pretty much impossible.

The only option then would be to have the football shown in a special area off site. ME approaches one of his neighbours and says I want another big field beyond the western car parks or just behind Paines Ground, which could be approached through 2/3 gaps in the fence. He might have to pay say £100,000 to the farmer and would need another £100,000 to set up walkways, toilets, bars etc plus say £100,000 for the screens, speakers, broadcast rights whatever - so maybe £300,000 altogether.

Rather than eating into the festival budget, he then approachs one or more of the many companies looking to link themselves with the World Cup - Mars, Coca Cola, Mastercard, Sony, Budweiser etc. He can offer them branding access to the wonderful demographic of the Glasto audience - all for just £300,000, which is a drop in the ocean for their World Cup budgets (I know Coca Cola in the UK alone have allocated over £25m for World Cup activity).

Then every game during the festival can be shown, not just the England games. It might be slack for Switzerland vs Honduras head to head with U2 but there may be people who want to check out Portugal vs Brazil for example as well as the England games.

I realise there are problems to be avoided such as bottle necks in and out but that would apply wherever it is shown.

    Just a thought......

  12. Saw him last Friday in Cambridge and he was ace then as always. I dont much rate the new album compared to the previous 2 but it still has some quality tunes on it.

Not sure about the other gigs on this tour, but i found the big singalong tunes from the first and second albums weren't as loud as previous gigs i've been to. Which probably suggests there's an increased number of new fans attracted by the latest album - which is all good. Anyone else find this?
