Nice photo op for Bojo and Zelensky yesterday...for Boris it helps him look like a proper world leader, and with Sunak out of the way now he'll likely be leading tories into next election. For Zelensky it helps to show that Ukraine are winning, at least in Kyiv...but now the fun and games start in Donbas...Russia need some sort of win by May 9th apparently, when Moscow has big Victory Day Parade...but Ukraine probably feel like they can drive Russia out completely.

Our chancelor Nehammer was there the same day. Its really weird. Zelensky must have a full time-table to meet all the europen and world Leaders, besides all of this war. Nehammer will be meeting Putin tomorrow 3 pm, so i hope that it will have at least a little positive vibe for the way out of all of this mess for the future.

Gas prices are no longer relevant anyway. Putins cutting Europes gas supplies off.

German chancelor Olaf Scholz commenting on a very dry note "contracts are contracts and we will be staying to pay the gas deliveries in Euros" also saying "I have said this to Mr. Putin himself".

    Masks work...

return of the masks here, at least for indoors, after they cancelled this mandatory vaccination thing. our government is completely ridiculous, but at least some distraction from all this putin-shit for our media.

The biggest problem with any deal with Russia is trust. Will Russia just end up invading in a few years anyway?

Talked to my old history professor at university yesterday. He said that Putin won`t be much interested to go any further than  the Dnepr.

there's always been a big anti-nuclear movement in Germany, not just because of Fukishima but also previously because of Chernobyl and Three Mile Island. Nuclear power is far from perfect, accidents can and do happen, you have to dispose of the stuff, and you still need to source the raw material....but yeah, relying on Russian gas for most of your energy in hindsight was a big mistake. So, if they do sanction Russia's gas which would be a massive move, then they'd probably have to go back to coal in short term, build smaller nuclear power stations. not sure how quickly that can be done, invest massively in renewables, and look to buy energy from elsewhere. Italy has similar problem too.

Our economy is very dependent on russian gas, but also fuel (the OMV, the national fuel company has given some major credits to russian comapanies which will be scraped now) and other things. The lack of gas will certainly be a massive blow here. In the next few months it is secured, but prices for gas and normal fuel (at the petrol stations) are rocketing at the moment. This must be a nightmare for our green environmental minister Gewessler (worked for Greenpeace before) as one solution could be to get gas from the US, but this would be far more expensive and is not very environmental friendly. Another one which is thought about at the moment would be enforcing investments in wind-energy, but this will take a lot of time and be also very expensive. Nuclear-power is certainly no option here. so, there will be problems if situation is not improving and many countries who are dependent on gas-pipelines will have to act fast, because there will be high demand on a small market.

yeah, I didn't know much about Ukrainian history until all this stuff...and the recent excellent Rise of the Nazis, Dictators at War doc on BBC...and what Germany did in Ukraine in WW2 as they moved through to try and take Russia was absolutely terrible. The orders came from the top...no mercy, kill all jews, and they killed a lot of non jews too. No wonder this is all so raw for Ukrainians.

    Here's the doc.

I love these docs, especially from the bbc, as I studied history in Austria, thanks very much.

he should be better "denazifying" his own people. American Media was reporting yesterday that he sent his Wagner Group to kiev now. Their ideology seems to be rather clear as they like to use Nazi-Symbols, even on their uniforms.

If its for next winter, have they not (without saying it) made it mandatory for at least a 4th, possibly a 5th dose? Because whatever you take now will be long gone by winter based on the waning data?

Yeah, that is not totally clear. As already stated it`s a quick shot. I assume it could be also mandatory for the 4th or 5th dose. They already cut the validity of 2 doses to 6 months (from 9 months), so that you loose your status as vaccinated after this period, so in theory you are out of public life with that - but that`s the theory - I have been to the biggest electrical store some days ago and you are fully controlled at the entrance, on the other hand stores like H&M do not control anything here. But government has not made it clear until now as they have dodged that question, i think that they are going as far as they have visibility (as they now are fully on all what the experts have to say) - with other doses it seems to far away, especially if it states that vaccination would be useless (so they also made some clauses that they can cancel this new mandatory thing as things go into another direction).

In 12 month time can anyone really see the likes of Austria / France etc keeping this up ?

The pursuit of the unvaccinated is largely pointless according to the report in the lancent...

Drakeford and his type keep saying they are following the science but it seems to me they are following a subset of science which stems from March 2020 and largely pushed by the Indy Sage types...   The science has moved on...

Good point. The new omicron wave has changed the view on the mandatory thing, also by many experts. But on the other hand the mandatory vaccination for omicron has come far too late. All are saying the mandatory vaccination is for the next coming winter. Maybe it is in the bones here because this winter with all those lockdowns and restrictions (for the unvaccinated) was hardly bearable, especially not for tourist destinations (we are again high risk country for Germany). this winter season has been the worst one I think. and by the way one of our intellectual papers has this Pagel (together with Austrian Expert Ulrich Elling who was one of the first who warned about the devastating effects of omicron) on the front page and her forecast for a new far more worse variant, so media here knows how to keep people concerned, especially as our rollercoaster-wagon is still going upwards now.

It's mad that we've announced what we have this week while France are requiring boosters for most things including long distance trains and Austria are signing into law actual mandatory vaccinations.

yeah, but here mandatory vaccinations are a quick shot. government had water up to the neck in December with Delta and mandatory vaccinations seemed the only way out for them, especially with Omicron coming. it has not been planned very well as the legally basis is still controversial, many people from their own parties and also many experts are not for a mandatory thing and there will be problems with collected data of people in the first few months, so police and other forces can only make spot checks (like when driving too fast). so its a shaky thing (they have included a vaccination tombola now where every 10th vaccinated wins some money), i think it`s necessary, but there would have been other measures, more effective measures like pay for PCR tests, pay for hospital stays for the unvaccinated or some sort of taxes for the unvaccinated or tax relief for the fully vaccinated. so rather controversial here, and a feast for the right wings who claim the freedom for the simple people as they ask the people not to get vaccinated (but by the way many right wings leaders are already vaccinated).

    Austria now requiring the booster...

Caught out a friend who is going snowboarding next week - not now

I think that in addition to the booster also a PCR test (valid for 48 hours) is mandatory for people from high risk countries.

But its rather typical for our confusing health department that they have not changed that until now as it has been put in place on 25th december for countries where cases were high at that time (UK, Netherlands, Denmark, Norway).

  12. Here they invented new rules from 27th december onwards for omicron -

indoor events - up to 500 only 2xvaccinated allowed

up to 1000 2xvaccinated and tested

up to 2000 3xvaccinated and tested.

curfew until next year 10pm -

travel restrictions to UK, NL, Denmark and Norway - you have to be 3xvaccinated and tested to travel with quarantine

and on top all unvaccinated can meet for christmas-time (they call it amnesty), but then are forced to get vaccinated

(or pay up to 3.000 pounds) as it becomes mandatory.

This is all mental and I really get tired of all this shit.

  13. No Dutch Music Festival this year. The Government has announced today. Not even with vaccination passports or testing. All music events are off at least until the start of September. And this after all these test events which went rather good (Eurovision etc.). So maybe next year, maybe not, who knows.

Women’s cycling for me today … quite a performance from the Austrian to get in early break and then solo it for 40k to the finish …. Holding off a very mighty Dutch team

This has been really exciting. Heard that the Dutch team forgot about her. She started professional but did not like it with all these competitive things and went back to the amateur sports because she does it more for fun, also has a doctor degree in mathematics, but yeah, until these days I did not know this about her, guess that nearly no austrian did, but yes, what a race!

They haven’t got a clue what they are doing.

Yeah, that`s really another mystery of life. Eu says France is safe, UK France is not safe. It`s another of those zick zack movements with a sudden U-Turn nobody expected. Instead of saying this whole system is wrong as it has not worked yet they are making things worse, most important for the whole industry as it`s building not much confidence for consumers - it`s like selling a television with saying "good TV, but I don`t know if it will work tomorrow".

Weatherspoons had app ordering before Covid.  I doubt app ordering will be going anywhere now.

Never realized that to be honest as here it would be completely strange ordering with app, even now, but anyway today is fish friday club isn`t it?

True but might slow it down with the hols coming up? I doubt its a problem in reality but it could be a perceived problem that gives ammunition to certain people.

Germany or their Robert Koch Institute to be exact has classified France in the same category like Croatia which is on the green Watchlist in the UK, really weird, think there is the Beta variant causing concerns in Reunion and other oversea destinations, but not very much in mainland France itself.

  18. Last of the remaining big Austrian Festivals - Frequency now cancelled. I think the Dutch Festival with the 1.000 cases put the nail in the coffin. Also the rising Delta and the crisis seating of the health department yesterday. So, another lost summer coming up here now, and this with 1st July everything possible, really disappointing. Honestly, apart from some festivals here and there it will be hard for many in the UK, Europe now is more of a desert ground for the remaining music/event industry.

Pub near me is officially going to use Covid passports, I do wonder if they'll all eventually be forced into doing it

Fairplay, I think. Here clubs with indoor gigs only for the fully vaccinated from now on (because of Delta). Problem will be who controls this as it did`t work in many fields until now. But yeah, if it works there will be an old audience for clubs from now on.

do you independent sage also have jobs in these countries ?  😀

    here they are called journalists

(in one of our biggest newspaper we have this German Guy Peter Nonnenmacher, who lives in London and always writes about independent Sage and Pagel if they are omniscient, but mainly only out of the reason he hates the UK government)

maybe just maybe it works in both directions ? and the virus is the thing that ultimately dictates ..... lets see what happens in Europe .... will they reimpose restrictions ... Holland already has ... so has Israel ...

an interesting question between the politics from Germany and ours is who has the responsibility - the individual or the state. Should the state work with restrictions or is it up to the individual - should someone bear the same restrictions when he is double jabbed as others who don`t want to be jabbed. As there is the main problem in many places in Europe that they have now reached the point where it gets harder to find people who want the get vaccinated. So the vaccination speed is going down as the delta becomes more prevalent. Today our government talks about tightening of measures - and the first two victims are not that hard to find - travel and clubs/gigs/nightlife/entertainment industry.
