Honestly I was thinking about those low gates that are light and a meter tall. So they could be quickly deployed by stewards rather than needing facilities.

In the areas I mention it's not there is not enough space it's just that people have to move left and right tryna dodge groups comming the other way. In 2016 when it was muddy it was literally nightmarish to get though.

Oh I think I know the area you mean now. You'd still be surprised, those little one meter barriers can kill you in a crush. I could maybe see it working there but for the logistics of putting it in place and then having probably 5-10 stewards each side directing around it for several hours.

Not sure it's the same Railway track is really narrow which is why I'm guessing it was more problematic.  These areas are 10 times wider.

There was an attempt to do something like this this year for Elton John but the briefing to the stewards seemed a bit vague and unplanned. It might have worked if they had been better planned

They try to direct people to the back of the field to filter down from the back, followed them for Foo fighters and we had a much easier time getting to the middle.

The main problem you have on the walk ways is that as soon as you put more barriers onto it that is more things that people could get crushed against and you've effectively halved the capacity of the route. Crowd control is really tricky to balance to make sure stuff you put in doesn't make actually make anything worse.

It's at least partly that but also cutting a lot of public camping space to grow the hospitality/accessible areas and probably people bunking in if you believe that's happening.

I think the only net loss in camping space was river mead this year. They added more space in Dairy and Paines ground and pennard hill for the public.

Issue was you had to trek through the site to get to it.

Surprised by the rumours of Rabbit Hole going. Only got in for the first time this year so timed that well it seems.

Not even heard of Sea King so very intrigued by that if it’s replacing Arcadia.

As much as I love SE Corner I think that’s probably due a bit of a mix up now. What that is I don’t know but could definitely do with a shake up.

There's such a Mandela effect about the Rabbit hole, it's not the secret bar it's an open tent on the Map.

The secret bit is Rabbit Holes Funkingham palace, so will be interesting to know if that's going as well or they're just changing up the publicly accessible bit.

I remember (vaguely) watching England v Columbia on a big screen at Glastonbury in 1998 but that was before the mobile phones era so i guess anyone who wants to watch it now could do so in their mobile but could be on somewhere

I remember watching highlights of the women's world cup on my phone in 2019. So yeah technology has changed.

The rough rule was if there's a game on the wed/Thurs they'll put it on. Anything Friday onwards is a no go.

It could be an England Vs Wales match up but they won't know that until after the festivals started. I guess if Wales qualify their last group match on the wednesday might be shown.

. They were forced out by security a few hours later.

Always enjoy at a festival when the huge uniformed showsec security turn up and tell people "You're leaving and it's your choice if you're leaving the campsite or the festival"

Understood, thanks. So, once you're in, you're stuck in for the duration, and without a wristband, right? If so, not difficult to slam a bunch of random wristbands on to blend in, and I'd have my kids with me too which generally seems to make security 100% uninterested/unsuspicious in you.

I'm up for it, how does one get in touch with local villagers???? 🙂 Write to everybody in Pilton? Or is there a network for this kinda thing?

I mean you've no idea if they're just going to fleece you before handing over £500. They also tend to use it for mates first.

Arcadia Spider always used to be at Boomtown.

Arcadia Afterburner has previously appeared at Bestival and currently appears at Valley Fest.

    I did not know this!

    Lovely stuff!

What is this local villager loophole? Because if there's a way I can easily buy a ticket for £750 or whatever the sum was I saw mentioned on another post about it, I'm up for it... Local villagers on the forum, feel free to slide into my DMs... 😄

You can transfer the ticket to up to 5 different people by writing a different name on the back.

Only one person is allowed to be on the festival at any one time on the ticket, you're meant to leave, write the others name on it and they then go in.

What happens is they go in with you on another ticket, take your ticket off you. Then use it again whilst you're still in the festival.

They removed pylon fields and the area behind the park in the last 2 years and didn't make any more space available for public camping

The turned staff camping in dairy and paines into public camping this year.

The removal of river mead late on won't have helped with space this year. The entire east side of camping was full really quickly.

Agree, it's really not a Shambala thing and presumably would be out of their reach budget wise.

As much as we say it's small for arcadia, the spider would take up half of Shambala!

And you're right having something fire breathing isn't necessarily in the spirit they're going for. It's more likely at something like Boomtown but I can't see them wanting 2nd hand Glastonbury sets.

Little bit late to the whole EPO thing. But having worked on plenty a gate. The vast majority of people scanning EPOs couldn’t give a monkeys when they get the error message. Wether it’s your average volunteer or exhausted security they’d simply rather not have the agro of telling people they can’t come in when the reason they’re getting the error in the first place was that they weren’t properly checked out in the first place.

That's not my experience on the EPO scan on the gates.

Well supposedly there's never been that many since the fence.  There were definitely some things they had to address that occurred in the past...

Yeah I meant mostly this century 🤣

It's a good point though, if numbers start climbing significantly they'll put the festival at risk again. I do worry that it's getting to the stage where everyone knows you can get in without a ticket.

    Yes, there's enough.

I'd be surprised if the number unofficially* on site in the last festival was less than 10,000. Via a whole variety of different means so there's not one single hole to plug, it's more like a sieve.

*by unofficially, I mean vs what GFL have provisioned for - more locally it may not be thought of in those terms. I believe that at least some Area Managers are aware of it happening and either actively enable it or at minimum turn a blind eye.

It's all a careful balancing act, they've got the 210k cap and in theory I think if it got to a point where they knew there were that many people in the festival they'd have to stop entry.

But in reality theres never that many on site at once. From people arriving late and leaving early, resting at off site camping. Some people will even be leaving on the Friday or not turn up entirely (I think it was about 100 coach tickets weren't used in 2022). Then artist guest list passes etc might only get used for one day.

So there's quite a bit of fluidity in the actual numbers on site each day which will help with any people sneaking in.

The biggest issues with crowding is surges which can happen with relatively small numbers of people.

It’s a shame the planning permission was refused.

They could have kept it if they agreed to take it down each year. For costs reasons they couldn't do that so applied for retrospective planning to keep the base but painted green.

The Council said rural Somerset is not the place to permanently store a 1970s dock, and tbh they are kinda right.

Miss Pangaea but they still have the concrete footings from it so could put something else there.

  16. I think I sort of disagree. Let people do their own thing and enjoy the gig how they want, you focus on your own enjoyment.

Most of the time it's not really interfering with you that much. The only really bad experience I can recall is people who put the flash on for a video, but that's mostly stopped now cameras are getting better.

I have a quick question about FMS. I’m a  qualified mental health first aider, just recently completed my refresher course.

Would FMS need mental health first aiders, or should I explore volunteering with Samaritans?

Thanks for pointer to Samaritans though, looks like they are open right now to recruitment for volunteers. But you must do more than one event.
