Isn't the Discord server largely just Gucci Piggy / Somto Raphael Unigwe and the lads making flags of dentalplan and mounting forum raids and suchlike larks? Do they actually know anything?

Just to chip in, this is absolutely not the case.

Metal is a dying and fading footprint in modern culture. Hence the fact that Ghost and Babymetal are the only two acts in the last 10 or so years that have emerged and made an impact. Bring Me started getting crossover success when they ditched  “deathcore”. I’m not saying they are bad but only people who are familiar with metal will know who they are. Metal really isn’t big in the public conscious at all.

Think the harshness of your language has meant people misinterpreting your point.

It’s pretty undeniable imo that where metal sits in mainstream culture is vastly different to 10 years ago and basically incomparable to 20/30/40 years ago.

As others have pointed out there are literally no bands that have emerged in the past 10-20 years that are in any way comparable in terms of mainstream cultural relevance or commercial success to Metallica, Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath, Bon Jovi, Motörhead etc etc.

that doesn’t mean metal is “dying” (I know you didn’t say it was), it’s just not relevant to mainstream culture and is a subculture. That’s not a bad thing necessarily (I wish electronic music was more of a subculture than it currently is personally), tho it does mean that for big commercial metal festivals, there’s no acts with the mainstream or commercial success to dislodge those acts that found such success when metal was mainstream as a genre.

Just been chatting to HAAI on Insta and she's not been offered a slot to play this year. Shame, thought she might bring her live show to the farm this time.

Ffs that’s so shit, was quietly confident we’d get a HAAi live show. I know she played like 3/4 times last year but the live show looks so good.

Speaking off bicep why on earth have they accepted a slot as a reading 4th down 😂

Yeah in addition to what someone else said about it not really being 4th down, the Bicep lads are also lovely and I wouldn’t think make too much of a fuss about placement as long as they’re getting paid their fee. Headline lots of fairly tiny festivals.

Speaking off - absolutely went off at Brixton last night.

Enjoy all seeing him tonight and tomorrow!

Haha it’s incessant already must have had about 20 heads on my Insta that were there - thought it was meant to be hard to get tickets!

The live show is good I caught it at APE 2021. Production still a million miles from being good enough for West Holts tho.

Is it super wishful thinking to have some hope that Jamie xx might make an appearance? He’s playing a fest in the US on the Glasto Thurs, and then currently he has a big gap after that. So I don’t know if that can entirely rule him out 100% or not (you know, planes and all)

It’s unlikely as he’s in US but definitely possible. It’s hard to place him as he’s a stage headliner and unsure there’s any logical slot for him, other than West Holts headliner.

Not to further dampen your enthusiasm but many of us have seen him in the last few years and it’s very rare anyone in this thread expresses anything other than describing his sets as absolutely terrible. Worst festival headliner I’ve ever seen - generally reviews of his festival sets over the past 18 months have been very bad - so perhaps that also lessens the chances someone like the West Holts bookers has him as a headliner (particularly with Fred Again filling a similar role and having all the hype etc).

Terminal V in Scotland have just announced for April next year, would happily take a few of these names!

    FjY_Jv0WYAAVSNe.thumb.jpg.6da021f98b017e7e87206d6bc4322f5b.jpg

Really happy they’re still able to host this after all the incredibly unlucky cancellations they had.

Would take loads of these on the farm for sure. Would like VTSS back on her own and in a late night slot. Jennifer Loveless and Taahliah would be great.

Hopefully that Folamour show happens this time

WH - Rosalia, Pusha T, Denzel Curry, Arlo Parks, Meute

JP - Rufus Du Sol, BCNR, The Chats, The Amazons

Other - Sam Smith, Halsey, Loyle Carner, Holly Humberstone, Belle & Sebastian, Mabel

WH - Fred Again, Young Fathers, Genesis Owusu, Joesef, Ashnikko

JP - James, Tash Sultana, Death Grips, City & Colour

Park - Suede, Yung Lean, Ezra Furman, Bleachers

    Sunday

Pyramid- Elton, Florence, Lil Nas X, Duran Duran, Sparks, Gabriels, Mika

Other - QOTSA, Black Keys, Bombay Bicycle Club, Wombats, Becky Hill, Shed Seven

WH - FKA Twigs, Pa Salieu, Sault, Kelis, Alvvays

JP - Pendulum, Aitch, Nova Twins, Tems

Park - M83, Hudson Mohawke, Bloc Party, Rina Sawayama

    H6hNqtA.jpg

Loyle Carner played 4th down Other in 2019, don’t see him moving up one step. he’s definitely West Holts headlinerish level now, maybe 3rd down Pyramid.

Also think that’s probably too low for Kelis.

also Arlo Parks is not suited to West Holts at all - much better suited to Pyramid/Other/JP given she’s done Park (and guested on both Pyramid and JP in 2022).

He’s doing festivals around Glastonbury and he’s already performed before. It’s a no brainer. No point wasting time being sceptical.

Yeah completely agree, straight in the “will be very shocked if he’s not there” bag.

Hey mate don’t think you’ll get toasted think this is actually a really good stab!

It’s obvs a little optimistic (GNR in Legends) and think there’s probably too many acts of the the Pyramid sub/Other Headliner size (Florence, The Prodigy, 1975, QOTSA, Pulp, Paramore, Lizzo, Lil Nas X) but I think it’s probs fairly close to what we’ll get in poster 1 based on what acts are about, save it’s missing a number of acts that are likely to be on West Holts (Loyle Carner).

And there’s a near zero chance of the XX being on the poster (although they might all be on the farm!).

Apparently that doesn't matter in a legends set, or so I've heard

Basically only doesn’t matter if every song of the legends slot is a singalong.

If it’s not, and you’re actually standing listening to them for a few rather than having a laugh with 100k other backing singers, and they sound awful, it’s a different thing.

Would they be booked for other sub? Like as in the genre - swear theres not been a dancey other sub remotely recently?

I just checked back to 2014 and not seeing anything - Years and Years this year as close as it gets but that is pretty far off i think

Nah, which is why I don’t really think they’ll be booked despite the fact theyre a big touring international act in a year of slim pickings - they just don’t really fit. Other Sub only place I think works but as you say don’t suit that slot.

Maybe pop up for for a DJ set.

Maybe they kind of fit a west holts headliner slot, but it wouldn’t be one I’d endorse.

Heaps of artists neuter their production for glastonbury every year - especially those that play lower down the bill.

Nah as someone who saw Rufus just 4 days ago he’s right, it’s a big production and the main thing they have going for them. They wouldn’t really fit or work in JP and they wouldn’t play Park with no screens.

Think they’re a potential Other sub maybe - don’t think their particular brand of 00’s style happy clappy singalong dance music is well suited for West Holts.

I think it’s probably less complex than that, a lot of people like to think they’re different and superior to every other human on the planet and when they see an act have a surge in popularity they rail against it, because they don’t want to be seen to follow the crowd. This place attracts the 1% of music obsessives, but I highly doubt most people know about or care than Fred Again.. is from a privileged background.

I see him as the electro version of Sam Fender, a likeable bloke with great tunes but people automatically take a dislike to him simply because so many other people like him for very obvious reasons.

Think your explanation is more complex than mine. The background is an aside, the main thing is his omnipresence is fucking annoying.

Think they’re substantially smaller than the last 6 Park headliners.

is there live show any good? I quite like the records but could only imagine a live show is dreadfully dull - definitely not glasto main stage headliner vibes.

Kind of see this being quite realistic, Friday is great for me. West Holts all day except a nip to Pyramid to catch Paak.

Given the dearth of it this year, I think there will be more UK Hiphop/Grime/Drill in 2023 in addition to Loyle Carner, Slowthai and Aitch. Think at least one Central Cee, ArrDee or Jay1 will be there.

Lol just realised you have Central Cee my bad ignore me.

Honestly I don't get people, there's a good artist loads are stoked about but they decide that because he's popular they need shit on him. 🙄

I get it's meant to be funny but it's just mean spirited.

It is directly related to the fact if you in any way consume electronic music, then social media and music platform algorithms will have aggressively and constantly shoved his content into your feed/face non-stop since his Boiler Room.

He’s also organically on people’s timelines because people with a passing or surface level interest in dance music are posting about him a lot - and constantly bringing him up in relation to Glastonbury (as others have pointed out, he’s brought up regularly in every efests thread other than the Legend Slot thread).

He’s also a wealthy middle class/upper middle class white bloke who got his start in music because his neighbour was Brian Eno, who invited him to join an a capella group that included Annie Lennox.

Also if you follow electronic music press, he’s had substantial industry interest and backing for longer than the recent spurt of hype.

That level of overexposure, combined with background and context, justifiably turns people against an artist (particularly if you think most of his music is shit or average).

Went to Daniel Avery's live show in London last night. Saw him at Primavera this year, so knew to expect great things, and it was indeed incredible. I think it's quite a limited tour run, but he'll surely be expanding it next year. Catch him when you can!

Was also a chance to try the shiny new venue, Here at Outernet, which I've been watching them build for years as I work nearby. Was pleasantly surprised - expecting it to be a bit corporate and vibe-free, but was actually pretty good. And the sound system and lighting were superb. Nice to have a venue back on Denmark Street again.

Really expecting/hoping for a live set from him at glasto this year (along with similar for Kelly Lee Owens and HAAi)

Given the way Reg thanked Emily and not Michael for the invite, maybe Michael's been the blocker all along on him playing.

No it’s just very obvious Michael has had zero involvement in booking the festival for years and it’s so weird efests always talks about him as if he does.

  21. Yeah I’ll be there, hard to see any clashes that’ll pull me away. Need to see one pyramid headliner and won’t be at AM as seeing them in Jan and won’t be at whoever else it is based on the options.

if he clauses with Prodigy that’ll be really tough. Hope he clashes with Fredagain the wee posh gimp so none of my mates will drag me to him.

Funnily enough, I mentioned that to my mate earlier, I'd honestly go absolutely feral - providing we get a solo Fred and Skrillex set elsewhere too. Would take any of it though in a heartbeat.

Said previously not sure Fred has ever played a DJ set, at least not in the past couple of years that I’ve seen or can easily find, and if he’s headlining Park or West Holts think it’s unlikely he does his live set elsewhere on the farm.

If he does get West Holts hope he is substantially improving his lights/stage production from Primavera/Coachella, which as far as I’ve seen is just those videos he sticks on his instagram on a screen and a basic light set up - hugely gap between that and Bicep’s laser show from this year.
