  1. The route in and out was different to previous years and we got caught out on the Wednesday.    They needed to put a sign at the junction with the A37 saying "no access to Worthy View"

  2. Stayed up at WV since 2014.   Still worth the extra cash.   We were on the last row of scout tents this year.  The reconfiguration at the bottom was the main change.   No more view!  That was a shame as it was great to hangout there and it was away from the tents so you didn't keep people awake.   I wonder what the occupants of the first few rows of the scout tents thought about being so close to the shops, food outlets and sitting area?

The path down was just about manageable but in the wet it would be a huge risk.  My wife slipped on the gravel going down one day and it could've been nasty.   This needs sorting for next year for sure or there will be injuries and claims.

Showers were ok.  The increased capacity for women was a good move as they had huge queues in the past.

  3. 2005 On Saturday Morning the Glasto Newspaper Frontpage Headline was "Thanks God!" with a picture of the bottom of Pennards on Friday morning.

It did dry up eventually though.   Unlike 2007 which was like a disaster area by the Monday.

It's a surprise to me, 2005 was wetter, reports of 2 months rain in one day, that would be about 140mm.

Remember it well.   Baking hot on Thursday, not a cloud in the sky.   Got a text saying to expect thunderstorms and thought it was taking the piss.   Got woken up at 4am by deafening thunder and the rain absolutely hammering relentlessly on the tent roof.   Stuck my head out of the tent to see a mate completely naked covered in soapy suds taking the opportunity to use it to get clean.   My then girlfriend then had the novel experience of going to the ladies to change her tampon and seeing it expand in her hand as the heavy rain hit it making it un-insertable.

My avatar is a picture of the top of the tent at the bottom of Pennards.   Poor bastards.  Those lads in the canoe had the right idea.

Thing was the sun was out by lunchtime and the rest of the weather was great.   The site was utterly fucked though.  Down by John Peel it was a swamp with danger of water overtopping the wellies.

It was - Oh so quiet.

The Sunday evening and night was really, really grim. It was still hammering down Monday morning as we were leaving, then stuck in the car park for hours.

Ah 2007.  Definitely the wettest one I've been to.  Monday morning the campsite was a disaster zone.  Loads of discarded tents.   Everything sodden.  Didn't get out of the car park for 8hours.   Got home about 3am.   Dumped festival stuff at bottom of stairs and went to bed.   Got up the following morning and detected a funny smell that was coming from the bottom of the stairs.   Everything smelt awful, lack the back of a bin lorry that had been flooded.

Despite all that 2007 had some great memories such as the stage invasion for Iggy and The Stooges.   It was so wet that the mud didn't stick like 2016 either.

  6. Very unpredictable at the moment and plenty of time for it to go either way.   One positive is the lack of torrential rain in the lead up so 2016 levels of mud on arrival look less likely.     I'm expecting it to be more of a 2004 weather vibe (a mix of sunshine, showers and rain on the last day) than 2007 (awful).

  7. Love "the cheer".   Can occur at any time on a  Wednesday in my experience.   The best one was when putting my tent up in the rain in 2007.  The rain stopped, the sun came out and the cheer seemed to reverberate across the whole site.    A mixture of loving being at Glasto and the sun coming out did it.

Of course it started raining again soon after and didn't stop much all weekend but who cares.

Relatedly does anyone expect most vendors to take contactless this year? In 2019 I used exclusively cash so never really got a feel for what % of the festival accepts card.

I was wondering about this too.   I just used cash up to now.  Don't want to bring heaps of cash if it's not needed but don't want to be left having to draw it out either.

  9. Why is it that the closer to the event we get the more bizarre and varied the forecasts?   Surely we should have some more certainty by now please?

I'm bringing all the clothing I own just to be sure I've got the right attire.

As good as it was this year at Glastonbury, I think there will be a massive regression as soon as we have a muddy one.

I'm sure you're right.  People are more likely to be bothered when tents are nice and dry rather than sodden and weighing a ton.  Especially if they're trudging back miles to their cars through a quagmire.

I think the key to enjoying Glasto is not to put too much pressure on yourself by building it up too much beforehand.

We’ve all got stuff to deal with in the real world and it can really drag us down.  I’ve been guilty in the past of looking forward so much to holidays and Glasto that when I’ve got there I’ve felt a bit flat or worse like I’ve got to start having a great time or it’ll be a horrendous waste and I won’t forgive myself when I’m back at work.    You can end up ruining it for yourself.   When everyone’s having what looks like a great time and you’re not it can make you feel isolated.  2016 was a bit rubbish for me.

Since then I’ve tried to make sure I see the bands I want to see rather than get dragged along to others I’m not keen on.  I’ve also tried to make sure I take time to chill out.  The greenfields, crows nest bar and acoustic field are great when you need to get out of the crowds and get a grip.

On the fitness side of things it makes a great difference it you can get into some sort of shape beforehand.  I walk about 9 or 10 miles a day when I’m there and it can be tiring so having a comfy bed is dead important.  If you burn the candle at both ends you’ll feel crap and as you get older you take more time to recover.  At 46 my days of being up until dawn are beyond me unless I put a line through the next morning so I just had one big 5am night this year and was in bed for 1am the night after.  I’m happy with just having a few pints nowadays along with the occasional smoke but that’s it.   It’s a far cry from 20 odd years ago but I enjoy it just as much.

My Dad started going when he was 64 and hasn’t missed one in the 12 years he’s been going.   He knows his limits and I think that’s the key.   You can enjoy it just as much in your 70s, you just need to manage your expectations and know your limits.

  12. Positive  - your tent is already up so no need to stress about getting in early to bag a good spot.    There is virtually no lugging of stuff needed compared with the main site.   Carpark is really close to the camping.  The 2 man scout tents are really roomy.  We got all our stuff in no problem.  It’s also much quieter than on site camping.

Negatives – There weren’t enough toilets this year.   I get up pretty early so I was ok but if you were up any later than 8am there were lengthy queues for the toilets.   Not ideal.   They also don’t mess about on Monday so if you had a late one you’ll find they’re closing everything from after 9am.   It’s a proper pain trying to find a toilet then.

There are showers but these do get busy in the mornings.  It’s not worth bothering every day.    The hill is steep but there’s no need to rush.  Best to take your stuff with you so that you don’t need to come back during the day as it can take a while if you’re camping a long way back from the gate.

  13. Like others I thought The Cure sounded brilliant at the Pyramid.  The best sound I've heard there in 13 years of Glastos.

Also thought the Chems were quiet.  I kept expecting it to be huge but it never did yet I was level with the back of the mixing desk so not in a bad place.   It sounded better there for Johnny Marr.

  14. I love how chilled out it is up there.   The bar is excellent and there's always somewhere to sit unless Chas n Dave are on.

My only quibble recently has been the lineup when there has been very little I've fancied seeing.   In the past I've enjoyed everything from CnD to Love with Arthur Lee.

  15. The end of Bramble FM in Glebeland on Sunday afternoon got me.   Their last show after starting in 2003.    Poor Maureen in tears at the end with the MASH theme tune playing in the background.  Definite lump in the throat.

  16. Got a terrible sore throat on Sunday night and this was followed up by me being full of phlegm and being weak as kitten.   I've now got a terrible cough.  Slept all afternoon today

    Not been into work.
