Yes, I remember talking  with a Sunday ticket holder in 2022 pre festival and they weren’t too happy about missing Macca, they had thought he would definitely be the Sunday headliner. Coldplay would be the Sunday choice with Stevie Wonder not booked .

On the surface I’d like to have Coldplay on the Sunday. But OTOH it would entirely screw The National over if they’re the Sunday Night Other headliner. They’d be better off going against SZA (and selfishly it would be less of a clash for me).

I actually don't mind paying the BBC licence fee 🤷

Me neither. Plus it makes my Tory mates really angry which is worth a few quid.

Anyway overall not complaining and Glastonbury does take more risks than other festivals but just guess it's just Coldplay that irks me. I get they do it for free cause they love the fest but come on lads you've done it enough let someone else have a turn. Or if you really wanna play again this year do a churn ups

They’d be mad not to book Coldplay. They’re basically the most reliable stadium fillers in the world. They aren’t even doing another UK gig this year let alone a festival. It’s 8 years since they last played (even putting aside how entitled the repeat booking complaints sound) and there will be thousands and thousands of people at Glastonbury in 2024 who weren’t there in 2016 or were there but went to something else (waves). They’ll fill the field, play all the hits and everyone will have a great time.

Excuse me if it's been said but when people say that the Coldplay booking is fine because it's been 8 years since they headlined. It's only been 4 festivals since they headlined

It’s 8 years though. Covid ruined the other calculation.

    Agree 100%

It doesn't get talked about nearly enough. Without a doubt the best set I've seen at Glastonbury (albeit I've 'only' been to five.

I’ve been to 10 Glastonbury’s and it was absolutely one of the best I’ve ever seen. Incredible sound, great visuals, pretty much the perfect set for a festival crowd.

  6. Given CTRL and SOS two full listens each last few days. Really wanted to love it as I think her voice is superb (that vocal on ‘All the Stars’ is otherworldly IMHO) but while I can appreciate the quality I didn’t quite get there. Irony is I’d go and see her as a sub and probably be quite excited about it but will most likely be dragged away by headliner level options elsewhere. Which isn’t a bad thing actually as I’m a cert for Dua and Coldplay. Hope she smashes it though*

*Secretly I still cling to the hope that it’s Olivia Rodrigo but whoever it is, I hope it’s great.

  7. Feel like I’m at a familiar point in the cycle here. As we get close to poster time I have a long list of acts who are touring and could play, that probably couldn’t realistically fit on the bill in appropriate positions. Then when the poster drops I’m disappointed they’re not all there.

Then I dig into the names and discover new stuff, and zero in on the big names on the bill I do want to see. Get more and more excited as it gets closer.

Then the full line up comes out and loads of them clash.

Then I switch to checking the weather forecast every 7 minutes.

Then I have an amazing time despite forgetting acts I wanted to see.

    Its the circle of life.

Actually really jealous! I find her a very interesting character. Obviously her route in to the industry was very natural but she’s more than proven herself and I love that she’s been scrappy and got the men to take her seriously and give her respect.

She’s doing a fantastic job IMO. Hopefully others can follow in her footsteps.

There's something about the recent uptick in Raye hype, particularly with the BRITs wins, that doesn't sit right with me. Not to go all tin hat but I've been wondering if part of it is a ploy to artificially boost her popularity in an attempt to create another international British superstar at a time when there's a dearth of them.

Thats not tin hat. The BRITS are an industry promotional tool, they’ve always been used to push certain artists into the public consciousness.

    Fair.

Robbie still fits the slot to a tee, whether he's a twat or not.

He does indeed. And I say that as someone who hates him and his music. He’d absolutely nail it.

Saw them as a headliner a few years back. TUNES! SLB hugely impressive. Discussed on 'ere before. Whacky the festival has ignored them to date.

Get the feeling they haven’t connected. The Durannies haven’t been happy with what’s been offered and there’s an impasse.

  12. 5 minutes ago, Wooderson said:

You need terry and junes to play the top of the bill. Particularly in a wet year. Duran² have 'em.

Would be a dream legend slot for me. They’d volley it to the moon and back. I’d take the lm headlining if that’s all they’ll do.

Annie Lennox would be my number 1 legend

Same. I’m not a huge fan of the legend slot generally but I’d be front and centre for Lennox

I'm still chasing Carin at the Liquor Store. What a tune that is.

I got lucky with that one in Glasgow in 2019. My reward for going to both nights at the Kelvingrove Bandstand, the first in biblical rain. The other rewards were the band absolutely rising to the weather and playing a phenomenal gig, and helping Matt get over the barrier when he went out in the crowd, then back the other way.

Possibly my favourite Glastonbury set ever

One of mine definitely. At the end of such a grim day (relatively speaking) it was a real soul burner. Incredible atmosphere.

During Elton, obviously it was packed, but the other stages were far from empty. Alt-J on The Park had a cracking crowd, it was one of my favourite Glastonbury experiences ever. And once they finished, I walked past The Other stage, and Queens Of The Stone Age looked bouncing too. Made me realise that seeing a band clash with a big headliner is a great way to get a brilliant crowd who are really into the artist.

Same thing happened to me with LCD Soundsystem last time Coldplay were on. Not a huge crowd at the Other but everybody properly up for it

I like to think that I have a fairly good grasp on popular culture for someone of my age, it certainly seems to be the case compared to people I work with, but I'd only seen SZA's name in discussions on who might appear at the festival.

It's easy to be out the loop of what the youth are listening to if the youth in your house listen to different stuff from the mainstream (if SZA is mainstream).

Weirdly though, it delights me when stuff like that happens. I've listened to a couple of her songs and it's not for me, but it sounds like a good signing for the festival. Other old buggers need to get out of the mind set of responding "I've never heard of them!" and instead take it as a cue to give them a listen. You may discover something new that you like.

Totally agree. I’ve never understood people loudly proclaiming ‘I’ve never heard of them.’

    1) That isn’t the killer blow you think it is

    2) It probably says more about you than the act, their fans, or the people who’ve booked them.

  18. 41 minutes ago, Wooderson said:

Usually 1:1 with your posts on here for over a decade mate, but disagree strongly. Having same vanilla bands (ones you name) headline every 4 or 5 fests is a pisspoor option. Fest gets predictable, staid, dull, old. Coldplay singing "Fix You" over that field in June is grim enough once per decade.

It only looks staid to those lucky enough to go every time Coldplay headline. It’s one of the most ‘first world problem’ type complaints I’ve ever heard. Plus it’s not like repeat bookings dominate the top of the bill. Last 3 festivals have seen Stormzy, Eilish and GNR headline while we seem to be looking at two first timers this year.

What percentage of people who went to Glastonbury 2016 will be going in 2024?

Obviously we can only guess. But my guess would be substantially less than 50%. And probably much closer to 20%.

Agreed. We’re in a tiny, and very fortunate, minority.

Not everyone is as obsessed with repeat bookings being boring or this tired argument of people not being able to top a performance they gave x amount of years ago.

Just because it was a cherished performance by you doesn't mean they shouldn't be booked again to be enjoyed by the many people who weren't there / never saw it / want to see it again.

I think it’s a bit entitled TBH. Some of us on here are lucky enough to get to go repeatedly. That won’t be the case for thousands and thousands of others. They won’t be rolling their eyes because ‘oh no it’s Arctic Monkeys again’ or ‘Coldplay again’. This might be a once in a lifetime chance for them to see a huge act they can’t get/afford tickets for.

Coldplay for example are just about the most reliable stadium fillers in the world. Having them at the top of the bill as their only U.K. show of the year, is absolutely massive to the average punter. You wouldn’t want them or anyone else booked every other year but it’s been 8 years, that’s not unreasonable (and number of festivals doesn’t matter, Covid broke that calculation). I’d say the same if they’d lined up the Foos or Sheeran or Adele.
