For sure it was a real dick move, but you can probably find stories like that attached to half the big rock/metal acts Download book. God only knows what some of them have gotten up to on tour. It kinda is what it is, I'm sure if Pantera play that crowd isn't going to be full of people who love some of the shit Phil's said in the past, but just want to hear songs they love.

Let's not get ahead of ourselves here, neither Download nor LG want LG to play at Download.

    True that true that.

I would go see QOTSA but I defo will not be stood in the crowd watching Pantera. That's a step too far for me.

Not judging Pantera's booking if it happens nor anyone who wants to go see them, it's all personal choice.

I agree that all rock acts across the spectrum should be booked. especially now reading festival has become a teenage pop festival, download can afford a day of acts in the softer rock realm. Even punk seems massively under represented at download. Having been someone who has been 8/9 times though, I'm the exact type of person that has now seen every headline act on the roster. I need something different. A punk day on the second stage or a band like pearl jam / FF / RHCP /Liam gallagher type act on the bill. the 4 day event seems like a good opportunity to go outside the box with that type of booking rather than double metallica. i can't stand BMTH, so if it's metallica x2 and a band that still only resonates with a small portion of the rock crowd then the other headliner better be strong. But i've seen slipknot twice at download already. Maybe make an old school nu metal day with slipknot limp bizkit, kid rock, stained, drowning pool etc then im down.

Offt Liam Gallagher headlining Download?!?!? That's a bit leftfield even for me 😜🤣🤣

As it stands, nobody except him and Brode know what's actually happened between them. Lots of he-said-she-said with accusations against one other and kids unfortunately dragged into everything.

One of those cases where I'm quite happy to separate art and artist.

He's got quite a bit of baggage though doesn't he, like kicking the photographer during an American radio show appearance a few years back.

I think that time has come and gone. Download generally books massive acts to headline and queens are always one step below that. They were booked to play under Metallica and Muse in Europe last year before they cancelled the tour and didn't look out of place.

Queens supporting either would be epic, although not quite sure how I feel about Josh with everything that's happened with him.

He probably will do it at some point, though he was only playing academies in May so it’s bit of a leap to headline but he’s the perfect festival act and he’d be cheap.

It’s becoming more obvious by the year that I’m not a school leaver anymore 🤣

When someone said about ??? Tiller headlining the other day that was my thought. At least I know KSI even if it's not my bag.

That Tiller fella I was like "I'm not that out of it that I genuinely wouldn't know who a headliner is right?" I still maintain that he couldn't headline lol.

I just find it wild he’s grown this big an audience beyond Twitter virgins with footballers for avi’s.

Inb4 someone posts any simpsons memes e.g. I used to be with it, old man yells at cloud etc etc…

I'm an old f*ck approaching 40 and I find it crazy also but from what I see around various avenue's, objectively, yes he'd be a very good, strong, booking as a headliner. And I do say "objectively" as I think his music is sh*te 😆, but I don't think you can argue numbers or any metric used to quantify his selection for the festivals key demographic.

With all due respect, if you haven't been to a weekend at download in 17 years, are you really the type of person copping gives a shit about? You're not much of a download fan and don't have much affiliation to the festival. i'd understand if you were a once every 2/3 years guy, but you've said you didnt even go in 2012 when metallica last played? so what is it you want from this festival? I've been every year since 2014 and first went in 2010 and personally i can see why metallica x2 is ok, though not what i would want. the fact is 4 days placates me, as if it was them twice in 3 days this would go down way more negatively than it being 4.

Fair points but my perception would also ask you the same question, "are you really the type of person Copping gives a shit about?"

If you're going every year does he really want to do something special for the hardcore who are going anyway or does he want to make a booking that will entice fair-weather fans across and swell his numbers even further?

I may be wrong but I don't think Download has a particularly strong history of selling out tickets for the past decade does it?

Whether you like it or not personally, objectively, booking a double slot by Metallica will be a huge pull for a huge contingent that haven't been in a while such as myself.

What do I want from the festival?

Well despite my interest in coming back from 2 sets by a heritage act I would like to see the festival move forward and promote new headliners at the very least. Personally I think they should expand it's scope a bit and book rock acts of all creeds to play as it would prevent the same old bookings being repeated but I can understand the argument to keep it a metal fest so if you disagree with that then fine but the fact the Bring Me The Horizon still have not headlined is outrageous considering their size and tours. I look at the line up each year and am consistently disappointed by how little the festival has moved on.

  8. It's really not that mental considering the booking's these days.

He is a massive figure amongst the younger crowd. Older people will look down their nose considering where he's come from, how he's found fame and an audience but he is undeniably a massive draw for that younger market.

  9. All seems very plausible. As I said before if it's Paramore that would be a day ticket for me. I kinda also hope they are mainstage West as well as that way I could get off home early and get the last train out to the 'burbs from Leeds. I don't think they would be the same day as Green Day as that would be too obvious. And I hope they aren't the same day as Billie as her day will surely be the big seller like Arctics this year.

Would you really not go if it was Metallica once, BMTH and two other different headliners?

I don’t think I would be as excited by it no.
Metallica have played Download since ‘06, I think 2012(?), and I didn’t bother going that time but the double slot has really peaked my interest in returning coupled with BMTH playing again.
Typically each year I look at the line up and it’s just the same old duffers each year topping the bill, even spread throughout the line up, and I think to myself “Christ I saw the majority of them when I was a young un I can’t justify the money to go see all that again”. I know Metallica are very much the old duffers as well but to see two sets in one weekend just excites me and makes me feel, for me at least, it would be value for my money. Everything else is just a bonus.
I think a lot of the older, casual metal heads will have the same viewpoint. I’m far more likely to have a day ticket for Reading/Leeds these days as despite my advancing years (heading towards 40) I’d rather go somewhere and see newer bands artists but a double Metallica slot really appeals to pull me back to Download.

  11. Double Metallica with BMTH finally playing again is the only reason I'm considering going so it's a huge draw for casuals I suspect. I've not had a weekend ticket since...'06 maybe?

With the double Metallica I honestly couldn't care who the 4th headliner is.

done another poster purely out of boredom, hopefully re-sparks this thread a little bit again

Paramore or The Weeknd would be the two acts that would convince me to buy a day ticket with no debate over other days so I'd be getting a ticket. Other than Idles though all the other acts I'd be interested in seeing are on other days so I'd very bored.

  13. They were dreadful at Leeds.

I bought tickets mainly for BMTH and Wolf Alice but was excited to Arctic’s again after not seeing them since around album 2 but the missus only cared about Arctics none of the undercard but halfway through the set she asked if we could leave as she was so bored.

I made her stay until Ritz but then we left.

I will never bother going to see them again unless they are at another festival I’m attending and there is no one else on I want to see.

Yeah but in what universe is that going to happen again? Metal is slowly slipping out of the public conscious.

I wouldn’t necessarily agree with that. A lot of the folks who grew up listening to metal are now of age where they are in the entertainment industry (film/tv) and using their clout to have metal as the soundtrack to what they are making. Guns ‘N’ Roses used heavily in the last Thor movie, Metallica in the last Stranger Things as an example.
While I admit I’ve heavily edited your quote to suit my argument as you were talking about succession, in the short term this won’t see much change but the fact that these artists are being featured more heavily in major mainstream avenues means that I think metal will see a resurgence in the next decade as people are influenced by this current trend.

Any shout for Metallica to do an S&M-esque show one night? Or have we touched on that and decided we're barking up the wrong tree?

Logistically that just doesn’t make sense. You would only do that style of gig at a venue that regularly hosts that kind of event. For one, the space that an orchestra would need to set up and two the sound of what, a hundred and four instruments all being viable in a space of that size? Nightmare.

N-Dubz is not for those people, it is for the women now our age, that played them aged 13 whilst sat in a park on a Friday night with a water bottle filled with their moms vodka, getting fingered behind a bush. The ones that now have 4 kids, all with behavioural problems, 2 of them being called Tyler.

N-Dubz is not for the Reading Leeds crowd.

You win the internet today 🤣

I can't really see them doing festivals, however, myself and pretty much all of my mates and loads of people I know are going to see them on their tour

    Dear god why?

  18. Yeah again I agree with @Andre91, Foals are an incredible band but they have never been a heavy band like Biffy started off as. Foals have no place being at Download and this is coming from someone who is a big fan of the band and saw (well heard rather than saw) them at Leeds Millennium Square this summer.

  19. I think Olivia could headline next year due to her popularity but I think given how early into her career she is she’d be far more willing to take a sub spot on either stage to be honest. Defo wouldn’t put her any lower than main sub on either stage though as she is a huge draw with the demographic of the festival despite the indifference from us oldies.
