Think in 1999 there was only about 1,000 people there?!

I reckon it could well have been even less - I'm just thinking of comparing it to something like Supernormal, and those very early Trucks felt smaller in comparison (although it didn't take too long for it to hit 5000 and start selling out).  I really do miss the Truck of old, I wouldn't have dreamed of missing one prior to 2012 (even when I moved a lot further away) but I'm not sure I'll ever attend another one now myself. I didn't really enjoy my last visit for a few reasons and that's fine as it's really not aimed at me anymore, but luckily we do have a couple of excellent 1000ish capacity festivals that have a similar feel and ethos to the Truck of 25 years ago. Anyway I'll stop banging on about the good old days as the nurse is here with my medication.

  2. It was a lot of fun back then - just two stages over two days (Saturday and Sunday, no camping on the Sunday), you could camp literally next to your car when I first went and there was two security guards for the whole thing (who had the easiest job ever).  There really wasn't much else like it back then, and I found a lot of good music through Truck.

I forget Truck's been a thing for that long ngl

I missed the first year but did go in it's second year, which I think was 1999, so yeah it's been a long time. I'd say that post 2012 Truck is only really the same festival in name as it's a very different beast these days.

  4. Well work isn't fun this morning but that was a great weekend despite the weather. Sunday in particular was fantastic - a brilliant run of stuff that kicked off in the afternoon with Dr Buckles Bowie Bug, then Young Fathers were great, the Max Cooper 3D AV thing was mind bendingly amazing, then I caught the last 30 mins or so of Grace before finishing off with Scalping, who were outstanding.

We had to get towed off the car park on Monday morning but that was relatively painless - it probably took 15 minutes from realising we were stuck and putting our hazards on to being towed by a tractor, it was all very efficient and well organised when I was fearing we'd be waiting hours.

  5. hi folks, I've just deceived to come to Best Kept Secret on a bit of a whim, swayed by the prospect of seeing both Aphex and the Chems at a festival in another country. It'll be my first overseas festival, I'll travelling alone but meeting up with a friend out there. I've had a quick look through the older threads but any hints and tips for going or things I should know?  I'm trying to work out if I can get away with just a carry-on bag for the flight, is it chilly at night when camping there?

  6. Certainly did have a good one, my favourite Supernormal ever, and I think most of the people I know who went have been saying the same thing. I've also got a new favourite act after seeing them at Supernormal, Giant Swan, who absolutely blew me away. Having said that there was so much great music there this year it's hard to pick out favourites.

Without a doubt it's my favourite festival I've ever been too. Even the little niggles that people had a few years back, like the lack of food options, have been addressed and the food there is absolutely gorgeous now (the pad thai place and Taste of Tibet were both brilliant). More than anything it's the people that go, fantastic atmosphere and the fact everyone you speak to is just lovely. It was ace to see it sell out in advance too, especially given it was in serious problems a few years back and touch and go as to if it would survive.

Anyway let's keep quiet about it now - we don't want too many people to find out about it so we struggle for tickets next year! Roll on next August.

  7. I've been going to truck since the second one and it's always been a very young crowd, as for a lot of local kids it's traditionally seen as their first festival away from mum and dad so they get a bit of freedom. It's always been a bit of a thing at Truck but some years you just seem to notice it more than most, and I do agree that it's particularly noticeable in the campsite now.

I do miss the early days of Truck before it started to get popular though - it was better when the security team consisted of two blokes sitting on a sofa getting stoned all day!

  8. Yup, this will be our 5th year and I wouldn't miss it for anything as it's by far my favourite. I love Supernormal - we try to get to at least 2 or 3 new festivals each year so we've done loads of different ones over the last 15 years or so, but Supernormal is the one festival that's always a definite because I've never found anything to touch it. It's consistently one of my favourite weekends of the year.

It's a cracking line-up this year too, certainly one of the best they've put on.

  9. Luckily she's a pretty hardy girl so she didn't let it get to her too much but it was the fact he just wouldn't leave even when she was yelling at the top of her voice that upset her - we've had a couple of "oops wrong tent mate" visitors, including one this year, but this guy was next level.

  10. After the double whammy of misery with 2005 and 2007 my wife and I took a couple of years off, then fell back in love with it all over again. However I do think that this year may have been my last, at least for a few years. I can cope with the mud and rain when we are there but the trek to and from the far side of the pink carpark to Pennards nearly killed me. It was bad enough doing it 3 times on Wednesday and Thursday (twice with our gear, then once more to help a friend out) but the Monday morning slog back nearly killed me. I'm 45 this year and it gets harder every year, especially as the older you get the more stuff you seem to need to take. I guess the obvious answer is a campervan but we already spend a fortune on Glastonbury and I'm not sure I can justify spending even more money which at the end of the day could get us a nice holiday instead.

Mind you I've said "never again" at least 3 times so let's see what happens. We've got a 7 year old who goes with us to loads of other festivals but has never been to Glaso but I'm sure at some point she will come with us when she's a little older, but for now at least I feel it's time for a break.

  11. Some knob had trashed our tent on the Sunday, presumably by being a mess and falling on it rather than someone just being malicious - the end result is still the same though, coming back to find it partially collapsed and full of water.

  12. Anyone else experience any unwanted tent intruders at all? Not thieves, just mangled idiots in the wrong tent. A girl in our group had an unwanted visitor on Sunday night who got into her tent, took his clothes and wellies off and covered everything in mud. When she woke up and panicked at seeing some guy next to her and asked him to leave he  became quite aggressive and started telling her how unreasonable she was for asking him to leave and just wouldn't go even when she was shouting at him. Obviously it left her a bit shaken, especially as none of us heard anything as we all had earplugs in as were out for the count. She said it was just that he was off his mash tripping rather that anything more sinister but it was obviously still a pretty unpleasant experience.

  13. I'd have to agree that it was one of the best Glasto crowds I've ever experienced for atmosphere, every single person around us was going absolutely batshit throughout. It was pretty sparse around us right up until a few songs in when it suddenly got a lot more crowded.

  14. Not a big deal but we had our camping chairs stolen from Pennards on the Wednesday, which is a first in all the years we've been going but our own fault for being complacent and leaving them outside the tent.

  15. Anyone manage to get a £2 oggie on the sunday!

Went before Future Islands on the other stage - must of had way to many left.

Not this year but last year we got a load between us on the Friday when they were selling them off cheap (pretty sure it was a quid) late on. It always makes me laugh now when I see people on here saying how filling they are and how they'll keep you going all day as our mate ate 3 in one hit, and that was after he'd already had a meal earlier on too!

  16. I'm surprised it's taken this long as most festivals I've been to over the last few years (Latitude, Supernormal, Supersonic, Mostly Jazz, Lunar and many more) have all switched to a similar scheme. Things will obviously be different with the economy of scale at Glastonbury but for smaller festivals it's not a money making exercise either as for one of the above the cups were costing only just under £1 to buy in this year.

  17. Massive in size too so not ideal if you're limited on space in your bags

It's actually not all that big - it's just about the same size as our Anker E7 (slightly wider but thinner) but less than half of what we paid for the Anker and just as good (at least so far, it'll be interesting to see what's it's like in a year) so can thoroughly recommend it. If you don't need such a big capacity then obviously there's much smaller alternatives but this is well worth it for us as we can charge both our phone's and our daughter's tablet from it.

  18. Just realised I've missed the amazon deal on that cheap 120l rucksack, anyone seen any similar bargains lately? Cheers!

    There's this one for £17.99 plus £6 post with a 3 year warranty http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B004RB4UFO

Edit - just realised that's the same one as posted earlier by cornish hick but for more money, sorry! Althought the ebay page doesn't mention the warranty.

Presume it's a manufacturers warranty anyway so am I best buying from ebay?

  19. so is it actually Altern 8 reforming, or mark archer doing a dj set?

I thought there was some legal thing where he couldn't call himself altern-8 if just playing solo?

He's free to DJ under the Altern 8 name now although when they played the Bangface Weekender a couple of months back it was reformation of sorts as he's enlisted Joshu Doherty (AGT Rave Cru/Posthuman) as a member (as I don't think Chris has any interest these days). There was one of the original dancers and the original MC as well, so as close to a reformed Altern 8 as you will ever get. It was an absolutely blinding set too, with the new material sounding massive. I'm not sure if that will be the same for the Arcadia set but suspect it may be the two of them plus the MC again,
