  1. RIP Jimmy Buffett. I never saw him play, but I did have a few drinks at Margaritaville in Key West. Practically unknown over here, he was a constantly big concert draw in the US and built up a unique cottage industry around his persona.
  2. Not a band, but it's been 30 years since Billy Joel recorded an album and yet he has toured constantly since. There was a 'classical' album 22 years ago but he didn't play on it. GNR took 17 years to deliver Chinese Democracy. That was 15 years ago...
  3. My response was aimed at the "seven lads, all without wristbands who were openly talking about getting in ‘at the fence’." The giraffe video is fun and entertaining and we can question its veracity, but its harmless enough.
  4. Agreed. In this case, discretion is indeed the best form of valour. I have got into the festival myself by less than legitimate means myself in the past, but feel that bragging about it is a bit crass. There seems to be a bit of the 'you're all suckers for paying' vibe I find a but unpalatable.
  5. Yeah, we won't get fooled again...
  6. I saw that set and count it as one of the most disappointing things I've seen at the festival. At this point, I cannot see him performing being a win for anyone. The casuals will feel let down by his dour stage persona, song choices and re-tuning of originals. The hardcore fans will want a longer set, and be frustrated at the drab atmosphere brought on by the disappointed casuals.
  7. Acoustic stage sub, at best. I loathe Rock Lobster... still seems to get a lot of radio play.
  8. Billy Ocean's Loverboy was the first 7" single I bought - still own it - so I have a lot of affection for him and would very much like to see him at the farm. If you haven't seen it, the video is just nuts!

    2024 Stage Predictions

Stick! Stick! Stick! Stick! Stick! That Duran Sade double is the stuff of dreams (if you're from the 80s, which I happen to be...)
  11. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-66334524 RIP Randy Meisner erstwhile of Eagles. Nice that the BBC are not calling them 'THE Eagles' - It is only ever 'Eagles', or 'The f**kin' Eagles, man!'

    The 1975

That is particularly disappointing. I mean, isn't one of the very 'big ideas' behind Muse's music the concept of state over-reach and control... aren't they meant to be rising up and soundtracking the revolution...? I wonder which song it is...
  13. 😬 Signed up to run a marathon on the 8th... May have to start bracing myself now for a disappointment...
  14. Terribly sad news about Sinead O'Connor. I always felt she was never given a fair deal by the media / industry, but was far more warmly treated by audiences across the world. I saw her play a set at Bestival in 2013 and witnessed a genuine artist doing the one thing she knew how to do best. I'm glad I saw her.

By that definition, it makes pretty much all of us racist. I wouldn't be bold enough to claim I've never said anything racist, even though it would have been unwitting and borne from ignorance.

    The 1975

I am serious. I do not think I am better informed, but my point is not about my view of this particular incident, this particular community or this particular region, but rather the more fundamental idea that perpetrators of discrimination and abuse will shift the blame for their actions to the victims and agitators. Sadly, enough people go along with this idea that it becomes accepted, but I fundamentally disagree with it. edit: I think in hindsight 'disingenuous' was the wrong word for me to use here. I don't believe there is any dishonesty from the people claiming Healy et al are to blame for backlash. But I do think they're wrong to blame them.

    The 1975

' Well-intentioned and at the same time a bit thoughtless' - the new album by The 1975 is due for release in early 2024.

    The 1975

There has been so much hand-wringing over this. I do agree that people seem so eager to criticise and it's based largely on pre-existing opinions of the guy, because what actually have they done wrong here? They played a show and criticised a government policy they rightly think is immoral. It seems whatever play they made, they'd be open up for criticism... 1. Boycott playing Malaysia - Local fans miss out, wider world doesn't care. 2. Play show, keep mouth shut - looks like they endorse or are ignorant of the politics and nothing changes, nobody else cares. 3. Play show, speak up - shitstorm ensues. Whichever choice, they're open to some form of attack. As for the question of them being responsible for any backlash on the LGBTQ+ community, I find that pretty disingenuous. The people responsible for the backlash are those perpetrating it, and placing the blame at the feet of someone else for speaking out is a misdirection. Bigots attacking minorities will always try to blame 'agitators' and the victims for 'bringing it on themselves' and so many comments about this incident just reinforce that lie.
  19. His set in '98 was an all time great for me. Sad news, but a life well lived, I'd say.
  20. Doesn’t look like it… what a weird experience for those at the back.
  21. So, Rick Astley is now undeniably cooler than Morrissey... Did not see that coming.
  22. Eddie Vedder....? That's mental.

    2024 Headliners

I meant relative to their back catalogue... The usual complaints are that their new stuff is too pop, not adventurous enough, not like the old stuff. No one is expecting them to be Vomir, right?

    2024 Headliners

Yeah, they're smart enough to know that the best place for them is Legend. In terms of appeal and standing, there's not much between them and Kylie.
