Explosions in the Sky were wonderful last night in Manchester.

A return would be most welcome from me

The worst thing I’ve ever seen at EOTR in 13 visits. Also BCNR. NO!

Dull bloke in old band t-shirt here.

Top ten sets (in chronological rather than any other order): Deerhoof, Fat Dog, Bodega, Yeule, Mabe Fratti, They Hate Change (though I only caught the end), The Courettes, Charlotte Adigery & Bolis Pupul, Teke::Teke, Panic Shack.

I literally saw one band off your list (The Courettes) and yet I bet we both had a brilliant time. I don't want to get all Marvel Metaverse here, but the different pathways and possible experiences always intrigues me.

And being a middle-aged bloke who didn't own a band t-shirt, I aimed to put that right once back at home. Two new t-shirts ordered: Ian Dury and Crass. Not very EOTR! 🤣

  3. I went through the usual phases of initial disappointment at the first announcement of acts, followed by some hope based on Simon et al always just getting the template right. And so it came to be again. A lack of big names, but probably the strongest overall bill, with great quality across many genres from start to finish. Special highlights were High Vis, Angel Olsen, H. Hawkline, Jon McKiel, Adwaith, Scott Lavene, The Courettes, KGLW.

Really? I don't remember it being that sparse in 2008! In fact IIRC it was the first time it sold out (obviously with a much smaller capacity than now).

Even if I'm wrong, it was a f**king great year - Conor Oberst, Mercury Rev, Laura Marling, Low, Sea Power, Bon Iver, 2 Gallants, Pete & the Pirates, Tindersticks, Jeffrey Lewis & of course Brakes.

That was my 2nd EOTR & the one that made me fall in love with the place.

Same in terms of the lineup and the lasting effect on me. I’m not 100% sure that this was the sparse year, it could have been 2009, but it certainly felt like the effects of the crash were impacting.

Genuinely think this might have been me. Near the bottom corner of the campsite basically as soon as you come in?

Far end, all the way past the Eastern style folly and right against the hedge. We learned our lesson and bought wind breaks the next year as a defensive measure😆.

  6. Great story. We once set up early camp at the far end of General Camping with barely another tent in sight. We left and came back to find one additional tent within about 50 yards of ours, which was pitched about a foot away. Even the guy's wife called him a gimp the next morning.

And last year I met an exceptionally tall young Aussie chap called Alex. Stoned off his head and full of beans about how amazing the festival was. Me and my mate are both over 6 feet tall and he towered over us, calling us short-arses. It was all done in good humour. I hope to see him bouncing around again this year.

People picking up bargains then, so i don't think we'll notice it being quiet - it's such a well spaced festival anyway

Lots of space after the banking crash of 2008. It was like a ghost town. I was wondering if it could survive.

First year not camping because of ill health.  Staying elsewhere is it easy to get in and out from the site on a daily basis

I would say yes. In our early years we used to drive out to top up with supplies at the supermarkets. No queues on the way back in and fairly easy to find a parking space. Since we've been able to borrow a campervan (the last 5 years), we've stayed put though, so maybe there's someone with a more recent view. The site population hasn't changed in that time though.

That would have been the Felice Brothers/Low Anthem/Deer Tick supermash. Possibly Phosphorescent too.

The Tipi I'm thinking of was much smaller and darker than this, with wooden beams all over the place. It was more in the centre of the site I think. And the Simon Felice band was The Duke and The King! It was 2009, the year when Fleet Foxes packed out the Garden Stage and made them think about adding an extra stage. God I was drunk.

No, it's just an image. The same as the Woods Stage isn't actually shaped like a Peacock.

I'll be stunned if it isn't exactly as it has been for the past few years and has simply been renamed. Possibly to avoid accusations of cultural appropriation or simply because it's not actually a Tipi anymore. It used to be, a loooooong time ago. Those actual tipis with the rum bar and seating area next door used to host a "stage"

Simon Felice and band in the original tipi was one of the best gigs I've ever seen at EOTR. You could get so close to the musical talent. I knew nothing about him and was a few sheets to the wind, so those diagonal wooden beams came in very handy for support.

    That site is great, thanks.

As someone who's made a setlist-based playlist, they've definitely been consistently leaning towards the heavier stuff in live shows - Gila Monster and Gaia are both among their most played live tracks (with only Magenta Mountain and maybe Magma being capable of being described as mellow). Here's hoping we get a long set at EOTR which allows them to show the full scope of their repetoire.

I’ve always loved their lighter stuff. It’s only my dislike of Ezra’s singing voice that will keep me there if it’s all metal.

Always been lush weather whenever I've been, so I feel like this may be my first wet one

I've seen about 3 partially wet days in a dozen or so visits. So far, this summer is true to form, with a pretty rubbish July and what looks like an improving picture in August. I'm sure the weather reports will look a bit mixed by the end of August, but we mostly get away with it.

Cider Bus chat reminds me to pack double doses of ameprazole. It’s cold in the late evenings and a hot cider before bed is ideal, but can result in heartburn if I’m not dosed up 🍎🍺❤️🔥

And loperamide to halt the galloping shits afterwards.

Bristol Beer Factory session IPA at 4.2% is unlikely to be anything too exciting, but the previous Two Tribes stuff is pretty bland so I'm all up for a change.

The BBF Independence and Milk Stout beers are great, so hopefully Laser Juice will be decent or they might have some options.
