  1. A lot of them pre-date 2014 though… I wonder how The Cinnamons would’ve faired vs Gerry Cinnamon, with the same exact songs/ production, given how he was initially marketed
  2. It’s interesting Reading have not got involved in bringing back any of the nostalgia acts, esp if they’re looking to re-establish a more dedicated, returning crowd
  3. “Bands” as a whole are pretty much dead now, it’s far easier to market an individual in the social media world Fender would have deffo been a band back in the day, it’s amazing how many “solo” acts feature on the lineup now compared to back in the day …just 2 out of 30 acts in 2008 were marketed as solo artists 20 out of 39 in 2023…
  4. It’s interesting that Courteeners, Kooks etc have managed to maintain a reasonably credible and ongoing live demand, while so many of those bands for our youth OCS, Shed Seven, Suede, Manics, Travis etc… were all cast adrift, despite many of them being much bigger and better than acts from the 00s that still manage to get a gig. There was definitely a shift at some point, where kids didn’t chuck away bands when they lost their cool/ initial interest. I think the cut off was pretty much over night too, it’s mad to think Franz Ferdinand have been completley abandoned in the UK as a credible act while the Courteeners are being touted as a potential big name at Reading by some. Reckon it was around 2006-2007 things changed
  5. Yup, deffo makes sense. You no longer have to wait for the artist you like to release something new, you have instant access to algorithm defined alternatives that meet your needs. It’s interesting as part of this that the whole nostalgia thing has kicked off so much too though. New acts aren’t replacing old ones like they used to, while once bands would go away and slowly die, they now seem to have a second wind. The discussion earlier re dark fruits and kids still being into the likes of Courteeners, Liam Gallagher etc instead of properly embracing the next new thing, Lathums, Snuts etc. Is it because there is a whole back catalogue there from the discovery?
  6. I’m probably not the best to judge but there seems to be a real dirth of acts that generate any type of proper excitement at the mo… Im probably missing some obvious examples but there doesn’t seem to have been a Billie Eilish or Post Malone type, who’d absolutely pack the main stage out of while not headlining. Im not just talking about Reading but the whole scene in general? Is it a TikTok thing? Are new acts too diluted now, just a commodity? Are they over exposed, is all the mystique gone? As said I’m sure I’m missing some, Fred Again is the only one that comes slightly close to mind… why is there such a dirth of new acts that collective masses are excited by? And to keep it Reading specific which relatively new/ lowish down act on the bill do people think will generate the most collective excitement come August?
  7. Beginning to get terrible sales vibes again, unless these are just returns due to card failure etc… Would be a desperate move otherwise, esp given how far out it still is
  8. Just a guess obv, can’t see Reading offering them enough to go exclusive over their own shows though
  9. Yup. As per the depressing discourse in the 2024 most acts can make far more money from their own tours than playing festivals these days One for the 2026 thread maybe
  10. That’s what I meant. Del Rey 2 Uk shows in 5 odd years (one being Glastonbury) Fred Again one show outside of London (bar Glastonbury) and none down south… Acts that aren’t hoovering up the dregs of demand Meanwhile Even Catfish’s grand comeback is only 3 years since they last played the very same festival 🤣 Gallagher has not stopped touring since he played in 2019 or whenever it was (and has headlined the same damn festival in the meantime Blink big dates across the country last year … Cinnamon, been a couple of years since biggish dates in England but meh, no one really gives much of a toss really Its no surprise really no other day has seen even the 2nd tier of pricing hit yet
  11. In an age where even medium range artists can charge 50-60 quid for a show and sell out, is the festival outlook as a whole looking dire long term, line up wise? It certainly seems there is going to be little chance of seeing an artist at a festival until they're on the last legs of their touring cycle, a la Eilish, Fender, Killers... It's no surprise Fred Again and Del Rey have sold so much better than Blink and Gallagher... While once festivals were many artists' big pay days, they're now an after thought, there to soak up the last remnants of demand. That, along with the HUGE competition on the UK scene at least, means (outside of Glastonbury obv) that I think our expectations have to shift massively. It puts experience at a premium over the line up really. There's no surprise the likes of Boomtown, Boardmasters and smaller festivals have taken a lot of Reading's custom. Reading's USP was a stellar, varied lineup that offered choice for all throughout the day. If they can't produce that anymore they need to be thinking more about experiences, Tubourg Towns, Sommersby Towers etc (and actual non generic brand stuff!)... offering cheap alternatives that actually provide people with choice outside of the core lineup. A half arsed lineup, nothing else to do outside of the music AND a sh*tty camping experience, does not a good festival make.
  12. My OG point was, countering some now long forgotten post, was that there is no chance that Courteeners are going to be an act that are used to Tent Pole the festival (ie ‘Big Font, top of the bill…). Even if 30-40% of the festival are committed teen dark Fruiters (I’m doubting this v much judging by crowds for such bands in 2022), I’d say 5% of those would still actually be WILD about The Courteeners, as in that’s what’s helped persuade them to buy a ticket…which was my point. They’d get a decent crowd no doubt and of course smoke galore, I think I may have even enjoyed them last time they played They’re billed below Jamie T this summer, the same level as Wombats (headlining the 2.5nd) stage against Fred Gain, an act that school leavers are actually probably wild about, they haven’t sold out a 20,000 cap fest up north… as you say yourself, about the same level as TDCC. Anyway, even I’m bored about arguing about this now…
  13. You seem to be confused. I did not say less than 5% of Dark fruit teens at R&L will like them… I suggested that they are not “Wildly popular” with at least 95% of ALL 16-20 years
  14. That’s not what you said though is it? You said they were wildly popular with school leavers… Now you’re saying they’re “known by” Dark Fruit school leavers. Bit of a gift change! This is probably 5% of school leavers… I do not disagree with this. As per my original post, to which you countered with Courteenes are “wildly popular” with school leavers, I suggested they’d be 3rd, which you have since conceded yourself to be the case🤣 Courteeners are not wildly popular with school leavers. In general, they are very unpopular with school leavers. Well may not dislike them, they simply don’t know who they are…
  15. My definition of wildly is deffo more than 5% of the demographic in question actually having heard of them before actually wanting to desperately see them…
  16. I don’t disagree with anything you’ve said there. Again nothing you’ve said whatsoever suggests Courteeners are “wildly popular” with school leavers though. They’re not wildly popular with school leavers…
  17. Do they? The fact they’ve not been at Reading for 5 years says a lot. They’re doing a show with the Kooks, they’re playing victorious, last year they played IOW. Boomer fests… And again a few 100 teenage fans at gigs does not mean “wildly popular” with school leavers, it means small niche… hence 1,200 followers on TikTok, a few thousand on They’re not helping to sell a load of tickets to Reading festival in 2025… Im not suggesting Cinnamon is wildly popular with school leavers either. He’s clearly not. He’s riding his Not 19 forever moment now though, so is vaguely relevant. He won’t be top 2 at Reading in 5 years time, no chance.
  18. I didn’t assume they were on here, I’d had noticed a school leaver love in for them if so 🤣, as opposed to a couple of northern boomers who don’t seem to dislike them much. If not your friends/ circle, where on earth did you formulate your assumption that Courteeners were “Wildly popular” with school leavers? I reckon if you genuinely thing that, you’re living under a rock with precisely 2 school leavers who are wild about Courteeners!
  19. What metrics are you using to determine this? A few mates who are into them? To counter your anecdotal evidence my nieces and nephew in the UK (20,18,15) have literally never heard of them… Cinnamon has double the Spotify monthly listeners, 8x the instragram followers, 20x the TikTok following (both are tiny). The Courteeners are in no way “Wildly popular” with school leavers, it’s simply not a slightly true statement. Theyre playing second to Jamie T at Victorious godsake 🤣… Cinnamon is clearly a MUCH bigger live draw
  20. Main difference being he's made some records people have listened to in the last 15 years...
  21. Great value that Yungblud gig. They can’t be making much money but it will be great for his career if it sells well
  22. The Courteeners aren’t selling Reading festival tickets in the year of our lord 2024 FR won’t give them anywhere near the money they could likely earn doing a couple of their own gigs up north. They may get a 3rd spot in the new world a la TDCC, they’re not going to be a big name on the poster though
  23. No idea, they have a lot of big shows this year, given how good it is, I assume it has a decent chance of doing well
  24. For discussion if Tangk does as well as it should, would like to see Idles as the lower part of a co-head next year
  25. Yup, they’ll just rotate back to how it was pre the two main stage era. 4-5 headliners next year, 4 the next year, then 4-5 etc… Ultimately it gives the flexibility to bring in the likes of Halsey, MTS, Foals, CATBM to support other smaller headliners alongside the likes of Foo fighters etc who don’t need another big name to sell their day …while they can also offer a proper large alternative on the second stage, bringing back some proper counter programming to further add value
