  1. My mum is a fan and contemporary. She always said she was too old to go to a gig, eventually I persuaded her in 2018 at the age of 78. She had a wonderful time. Thanks for the memories Charlie. RIP xx

  3. Wolf Alice 10-5 Sports Team Wolf Alice wins! I would agree they’re the best band on the lineup with no QOTSA or Denzel Curry so happy with that. Cheers for playing everyone and enjoy the fests 🙂

  4. The uncertain future of festivals is why I am going to take the risk to attend but I am not going to be treating the festival as some magic zone Covid can't follow me into. Someone mentioned it was great at Greenman to just "forget about Covid" for a weekend but the virus doesn't give you a weekend off. I'll be masking up as much as I can in the toilets and tents. I'm sure I won't be perfect at remembering to do it but it should be normalised that it is OK to do and it would give some additional level of safety if others all did as well on the chance some of us are carriers. I'm not going to be screaming at anyone to follow suit.. I won't be expecting anyone to give me grief for reminding them about covid either it just feels like a small sacrifice to allow the festival to happen somewhat safer. I'm double vaxxed and I really wish that meant I am bulletproof but it should be clear to all that's not enough these days with Delta around.

  5. I figured I'd start this while I remembered. It's certainly been a much more interesting month than July with a few big releases so far and more to come on Friday. The Killers doing Nebraska, Big Red Machine roping in Taylor Swift and a load of indie favourites as well as Lorde and her crystal skulls. We all know how it works by now but the rules are here just in case. Here is a reminder of the rules: Contest window: Any album released in August Entry window: between the last 0:00 Friday of the month in question to 23:59 the first Thursday of the month following (this time that's 27th August - 2nd September). The system: Choose any three albums released during the month in question in order of preference. The best receives three points, second best two points and the third best one point. See example below: 1. Album A (3 POINTS) 2. Album B (2 POINTS) 3. Album C (1 POINT) Any entries that say "so many good records. Can't choose! So in no particular order..." indicate a complete lack of understanding of simple gamesmanship. Votes from those entries will, obviously, be completely ignored. Everyone else, I will assume the order they are listed is the order of preference. Even if you number it 1. 2. 3. I will assume that is in order of favourite and not the points you are giving unless expressed otherwise.

  6. Their Glastonbury set is my favourite gig ever. The atmosphere had been building all day, I think I saw three acts do a Stones cover. Including Urban Voodoo Machine who were playing Avalon while Primal Scream were on The Pyramid. As I was making my way from Avalon, Seasick Steve came out of West Holts backstage area and started hot footing it towards the Pyramid. The speed he was going should have been a giveaway he was lying about his age. Getting into the front circle after Primal Scream finished was like being in crowds years ago, you could almost lift your feet up and just go with it. What a night. I was a little trepidatious as the previous time I'd seen them was a little flat. I think it was more to do with the audience around me to be honest, Manc Arena in 2004 but I needn't have worried. Chatting to the people around me for the very lengthy change over, I made the greatest of friends only to never have seen them since we parted with a handshake at the end of the set. A near perfect set list, Mick Taylor getting a guest spot (Midnight Rambler being my personal highlight), the crowd, fucking hell, the crowd were so up for it... just perfect from start to finish. So RIP Charlie. Always came across as an absolute gentleman, what a legacy to leave behind. The bedrock of many of the greatest songs ever recorded. tldr: "Charlie's good tonight, in'ee?"

  12. In the hour leading up to their set in 2013, I'd never felt an atmosphere like that at Glastonbury, not before or since. I'd not really experienced the feeling (of the criminally overused cliche) of the air being "electric"...until then. I knew we were in for something incredible when I saw the "Pyramid Field Full" light up signs, resulting in us having to find an alternative route to the top of the field, well beyond the solitary tree. It was a terrible position, sound-wise but there was something strangely magical about witnessing history unfold in front of us. 100,000 of us, in the palm of their hand. A real honour to be there, even if Charlie didn't want to be. Wonderful. Rest in Peace, Charlie.

  17. agreed. it's not like it's taking place last summer, but there are still risks, and some of the language on here about "forget about it" has been a tad reckless imo. now average age is older, so more double vaxxed people which means lower viral loads. But I know there's a fairly decent chance I'll catch it there, so have planned to stay at home the week after (luckily my job allows that)

  20. We were in the Club waiting for Miles Kane. Initially it seemed quite funny as we were watching people by the Main Stage get soaked as they tried to watch Skunk Anansie. Then it got worse and Skunk Anansie literally got blown off stage and it stopped being so funny. A whole bunch of us had to hold up the side wall of the Club as it started caving in under the force of the wind and the weight of a shitload of water that had accumulated on the tent roof. Finally some saviour attached a penknife to a pole and slashed holes in the tent roof to let the water drain away - probably stopped the Club from collapsing that day. Before the wall starting giving way we were hunkered down by the stage wondering whether this was the end - one of the very few times in my life I've considered that I might actually die. Once it was all over Miles Kane came out on stage and just shrugged, and pointed at all his rain-destroyed equipment that was now useless whether or not the show could have gone on (which obviously it didn't). We are off to Hasselt for the weekend tomorrow - we kept our hotel reservation for PKP21 even though the festival was cancelled. We'll have a drink in Café Vanveldeke tomorrow night (known to some on here as "the pub on the corner") and raise a glass to those who didn't make it back in 2011.

  25. It was Breaking More Waves blog that tipped me off, but there's a few reviews that mention it. There appears to have been trouble with toilets at all the festivals this year, both the quality of suppliers/supply and the state they're left in. I haven't listened to the podcast yet but I gather a lot of the main companies are contracted out to testing sites.

  27. We did our first family trip in the van at the weekend, down to Beautiful Days and the van did a fantastic job despite only being half finished. In terms of utilities we had lights, a few 12v sockets, and a working toilet. We also had a very comfy bed, a semi enclosed bathroom cubicle and a makeshift kitchen worktop. That meant Baby Blutarsky had a very comfortable time of it, we all slept well and we were able to cook breakfast on a camp stove in the van. It did get a bit cold overnight so I’m currently making sure the night heater is installed before we go to Worthy Pastures this Thursday.

  30. Not for everyone but the band that sold me a tix this year is Capdown who are playing before Creeper on the NoFX stage. Whilst it's not the 00s anymore they were so fucking good live back in the day. I went to my first Slam Dunk in 2010 as it was meant to be their "last ever show".

  33. My 14th Beautiful Days, 7th going solo. I hate camping, I hate portaloos, I hate mud, and I hate queuing. But I love the great bands, friendly people, gorgeous scenery and happy faces. The good times far outweigh the annoyances for me. Desperate for live music again I headed for my favourite bands rather than discovering new ones, standout performances for me were Frank Turner, New Model Army, both Levs sets, James, Ferocious Dog and Alabama 3. Highlight though was every now and again remembering that this festival very nearly didn't happen, that I shouldn't be there, that it's been 2 mad years since the last one - then that would make me grin or well up and I'd start dancing again x

  34. Looking at poll trends, seems to have stagnated a bit with a small gap potentially starting to widen in most recent polls. For what seems like the millionth time on this thread, individual polls don't tell you anything.

  36. Yeah Stoned at the Nail Salon is the real highlight for me - got a lot of time for that one. Agree about Secrets From a Girl. Sounds so half written and the definition of a filler track (that unfortunately starts a run of other filler tracks).

  37. We asked for straw or wood chip at The Big Top on Sunday morning as it was lethal, but we were told that the site itself does not allow the festival to use anything like that because it hampers the grounds returning to normal. We were reduced to trying to catch punters as they slithered in and around the tent!

  38. They close and reopen it every few minutes to manage the flow of people and prevent overcrowding. Tends to lead to a fair old queue (10-60 minutes from my experience depending on how early you get away). If you walk to Bow Road instead and go one stop on the Hammersmith & City / District, you'll be at Mile End and inside the station and therefore will have circumvented the queue. Trains themselves from Mile End never seem to be that busy due to the crowd management at the entrance.

  43. Goa Express were great yesterday at GM. I recommend everyone goes to see Lazarus Kane, they tore it apart on the rising stage on Friday. Caroline will be good and Sleep Eaters if you like psych garage type stuff. Aoiffe Nessa Francis pulled out of GM, so maybe some question marks as to whether she'll play EoTR? Covid checks at GM were cursory. Show your pass when entering the site and get a separate wristband. They didn't ask for ID to go with the pass so it could be anyone's. Think I've only seen 2 people wearing masks the whole weekend. Big Top has been rammed with the sort of mosh pits you'd expect for bands like Shame and Black Midi. The best thing about being here is spending a week liberated from all the shit that's been happening the past 18 months. No one I've spoken to has mentioned covid, it's been overwhelmingly positive to be in a field with loads of smiling, happy people who are having actual fun. It's never nice to leave festivals after having a great time but tomorrow is going to suck.

  46. Thanks. Another good day today: - the benches have hinges seats on them and are properly supported with noggins. - noggins added to the bathroom studwork. - a cupboard/wardrobe built on the end of the bathroom. - constructed the footprint of the kitchen worktop. - fuse box arrived so we can have a working power supply. - Fiamma vent extension kit arrived so I can finish connecting it and we can have electrical ventilation.
