Never stumbled across this thread before, but wish I had. I've had depression my whole life and spent many years drowning the negative thoughts with alcohol and playing at being a "normal" citizen. My first Glasto changed my life as it opened my eyes to so many things, but also showed me that humanity and society could be inclusive, supportive and differences were to be celebrated. In 2013 I split with my wife of 10 years, with whom I have 2 kids and the event triggered me. I hated being on my own away from the kids and after 6 weeks attempted suicide. Luckily, I failed. I got some therapy and support and have been largely OK every since. At G last year, I had an altercation with a coked up selfish w*nker and went to throw a punch. Luckily, my group stopped me and his stopped him. That night I went very dark. By the end of July I was still in a bad place and blaming myself, feeling guilt, shame, self loathing and work pressure was ramping up. My mind broke. My wife had to stop me slashing my wrist. I went back into therapy, on to antidepressants and had 10 weeks off work. I'm lucky. My family, friends and employer were nothing but understanding and helpful. I now feel like myself again. I'm a little concerned about this year's festival and for a while considered not going, given what happened last year. There was so much inconsiderate behaviour, open cocaine use and (to me) tension in crowds that I'd never really felt before. The flashpoint when I lost it was by no means the only incident of pushy (coked up) selfishness I'd experienced that weekend, which felt a million miles from previous festivals. Maybe I was already in a downward spiral, but I still have a degree of nervousness about this year. Luckily, I've had a refresher in coping techniques. Per the YouTube clip above, I think most of the attendees will have some demons. I'm 49 so struggle a little bit with being open about this IRL as my upbringing was very 70's/80's. All I will say is get help if you need it. I've decided this year that if the "vibe" of the festival is more 2023 and less 2019/previous and there are selfish, pushy w*nkers and blatant coke-heads everywhere then this will be my last. For my own good.

Well, my son becomes a teenager tomorrow and I promised him last month that the line-up would "definitely, definitely, definitely" be out in time for his birthday. I'm slowly teaching him that life is full of disappointments 🤣

I decided last year was my last festival - I watched Elton John from the front row of the Pyramid (for me that couldn’t be topped). When it finished I made the long trek to Glastonbury sign and just sat there for a good hour taking it all in for one last time and celebrating how lucky I’d been to get tickets every year since 2013. Whatever the line up has been, I’ve had amazing times even going the last 4 festivals solo and now I’m looking forward to watching it on TV having handed the baton over to someone new. It will always remain a very, very special place.

Personally I hope Avalon now stays away from the novelty pop acts. It looks like they are now being given slots on bigger stages and pulling huge crowds in many cases. Leave Avalon to be one of the few places with folk/rock/punk stuff on.

Everyone knows how much I adore the festival, but losing Williams Green still really hurts. There was and is no other venue that had/has that identity and curated line-up. It was like a small version of the 'New Bands Tent' that JPT was once and for many of us was a key part of our daily line-up schedule. Yes, the big bookings, especially on Thursday with so much less on around the site, became untenable. Fine. Stop booking those bands. But, that combination of upcoming bands and also daytime sets by more established artists who were playing elsewhere during the weekend (Everything Everything, Courtney Barnett etc) was unique to Glastonbury, and its passing is one small step towards the Farm feeling more like 'all the other festivals'. And that's a huge shame. With the loss of The Rabbit Hole, the only vaguely comparable daytime venue (though I do understand the reasons for its end), that type of experience at Glastonbury has taken another huge hit for those of us less interested in chart popular stuff and nostalgia acts. I truly hope they knock it out of The Park with a replacement for the ol' Hole. Ben

Apologies for the length of this post! I went on a bit of a ramble, so tl:dr; Glastonbury is a special place and is unlike any other festival. There be magic/dragons here, or something. So glad to see this thread still going strong! From my experience, Glastonbury brings a lot of emotions and experiences that I’ve just not encountered at other festivals. It’s not a bad thing - I think it’s just testament to how Glastonbury is truly something special, and connects to people in ways no other festival does. I’ve been to a number of other festivals in the last few years, and although I’ve had some great experiences at those, nothing is as era-defining as my attendance at Glasto every year since 2014. And so, this year is the first year since I started my Glasto journey that I WON’T be attending. In a way, it was a difficult decision to make - how could I possibly break my privileged streak of attending the most sought-after festival in Europe? - but in another way, I realised that I have always formed a potentially-unhealthy emotional connection to Glastonbury that I’m sure 99% of people wouldn’t relate to. I first started going to the festival with a “f**k it, I’m completely unhappy in my relationship and I need an escape” approach. Then a few years later, I was going to the festival with someone who I saw myself going to the festival with for the rest of my life. And then Covid happened, and we inevitably broke up (mostly amicably), and so when the ticket rolled over for 2022, I was still trying to keep the emotional spirit going. Then in 2023, she had moved on much quicker and easier than me, and brought her new boyfriend into our group, and I probably catasrophised the whole situation and made it more awkward for everyone than I needed to. I had also discovered ketamine (as a self-medicated antidepressant, because all NHS-recognised mediation wasn’t working for me) by that point, which in many ways has changed my life for the better, but at that time, I had no stable footing in reality and I’m kinda ashamed of how I might have come across to my peers. Why am I talking about this here? Well, Boomtown was a festival I started attending in 2022, with absolutely no emotional connection to anything. I was entirely unfiltered, made a great bunch of friends who were all as f**ked-up as I was (but in their own special ways). I don’t know which festival is BETTER on paper, but I know that I feel “safer” returning to Boomtown than I do Glasto. And so for this reason, I didn’t go for a ticket at Glasto this year, because I feel like I need a “mental health break”. I’d love to go to Glastonbury and not be carrying all my emotional baggage with me, and just attend the festival as a “normal” person, because there really is nothing like it. I just find that every Glasto, even at my happiest, I spend at least a day trying to hide from everyone - I thought I was doing okay in 2022, until I saw my ex on the screens during one of Kae Tempest’s most emotional songs, and a few days later, Sea Girls defined my life with their opening song, Sick. I don’t even remember 2023, when I was (in retrospect) at my worst. And trying to hide from everyone at a festival like this, camping in a wonderful, intricate group as I do, is quite difficult. Of course, I am strongly considering going for a resale ticket this year, because so much has changed in my life in the last year and anyone who knows me will probably say that I’m a completely different, more stable person now. But I’m just incredibly anxious that I’m going to have an “episode” at Glastonbury yet again, and I feel like it’s my own fault for setting this festival up in this way when I first started attending back in 2014, and so the cycle continues… This festival is truly unique, in that there is literal magic going on here somewhere and I’m not educated enough to explore it. Or maybe it’s just me. But yeah. Something so amazing and fun shouldn’t be so difficult, and so taking a year out is probably the right decision for me. (I’m also probably taking a year out from Boomtown, because I f**ked my back up last year and I’m still not sure if I’m recovered from that either) If you’ve read this far, thank you! I appreciate you! I don’t have any useful information to share, other than that Glastonbury is unexpectedly difficult and stressful for some people and it’s okay if you’re in the same boat - you can enjoy something and be dreading it at the same time. I think that’s the new “normal” now.

Is this the ideal line-up based on who's touring this summer? No. Is it worth the 40 euros per day I paid for my six day ticket? Absolutely. Liam doing Definitely Maybe - I'm in. Fred Again.. showing why he's truly headline material - yes please. Editors, Fontaines, Yard Act and Nova Twins bringing the guitars. Thank you very much. Plus excellent female representation with Raye, Halsey, Aurora and Janelle. And one more headliner (plus Jungle and Charli?) still to come. Perfect? Not even close. But as awful as comments of socials would have you believe? Not at all.

Losing Williams Green is a real blow isn't it, doesn't feel like there's a home for small bands to play now.

Ever stopped to think why they were not there? Listen to female artists when they talk about how they are treated. This is still happening in 2024. You can't just pretend that in the whole of the UK women just didn't want to make bands or didn't make them. Times haven't "changed". What has changed is our awareness of the historical mistreatment that UK female acts have endured and still endure. Listen to UK female acts talking about this. There is plenty of content on the internet about this. You talk about "merit" but what is merit worth on its own when you have the industry mistreating female artists just for being female? You simply can't expect equal outcomes when half of the artists are being targeted just for being women. Glasto are trying to do their bit in balancing this by giving more opportunities to voices that have been underrepresented. You seem to be under the impression that both male and female acts have always walked down the same path in the industry world, faced similar issues and had similar opportunities. That is not correct. Please, listen to female acts talking about this, we can all help if we listen. An open mind is all it takes

Managed to lay from my holiday without any hitches. The wife and I are officially going to our first ever Glastonbury Festival!

I think most of us are in the same situation re: headliners. I can't wait for Fred Again... and, no matter what people think, he's a massive booking with serious credibility. I'm not sure I've ever met a Sam Smith fan in my life, but on Spotify he has four songs that have reached 1 billion streams and, by the end of the year, I suspect all four will have broken 2 billion streams each. So, someone is listening to him. I thought Garrix's show was excellent in 2019 and will watch again. Stormzy is the weird one. Due to be a sub in 2020 and, yet, is a headliner in 2024 with no significant release between the two dates. Strange. Two (potentially three?) headliners to go. Subs are looking good though if rumours/leaks are to be believed. Raye and Janelle Monae provide excellent female representation and will both be great live. Line up just needs more guitars and live music, rather than button pushing IMHO.

Would love to hear of Arcade Fire playing to 17 people at brixton academy, due to a nationwide crackdown on a) people who don't understand the concept of consent and b) sh*tty ticket prices.

Any helpers would be massively appreciated, I am in the coach resale group (along with my Glasto buddy). I'll check what arrangements are for sharing the spreadsheet. Payment would ideally be made if you get through to keep it speedy. I would then refund anyone that bought for me immediately I have proof of purchase. The confirmation email comes through very quickly so them means the repayment would be made almost immediately. I will also be buying drinks on the farm for anyone that gets through for me. I understand some would be nervous about paying for strangers so an alternative would be to call for payment details if you get through, but that also relies on trust and takes time during which tickets may sell out, but whatever works is good! I can provide some ID and have been on here for years although not a prolific poster.

Gonna get a bit mushy now and I don't know if she plays it but this song means A LOT to me. I was meant to be seeing Avril live (and interview her!) but my mum died that day. My mum wasn't really into music but she loved Avril... must have been a Canadian thing as my mum was Canadian. This song got me through some very, very sad days and hearing it live would definitely be a super healing experience. Anyway, as you were. 🥲

I didn't know it at the time, but I have already had my last Glastonbury. As I didn't know it, I never got to have the mindset that 'this is my last Glastonbury'. If I had known (and if it was allowed - no idea if it is or not these days) I'd have one last camp fire on an evening when the light was beginning to fade. I'd look down the hill from my campsite (what used to be Top Webbs Ash (and still maybe called that) at the 'town' below. I'd carry on watching until I could now see the place all lit up in the surrounding dark, and I'd say to myself 'I'm f**king going down into there in a bit'. And I would go down there, into town. I'd immerse myself in the frolics and shenanigans like an Emperor of the night.

Jesus Christ, we get it. It's bad but isn't this year bad everywhere? Noone is getting fired when even Coachella and Glastonbury struggle with their lineups. I don't know why you keep expecting miracles.

Hi Lisa, Full disclosure, my preference would be to just buy a ticket but cannot face the idea of watching Glastonbury on the tv so needs must and when I've missed out on a ticket I've volunteered for Oxfam in 2019, WaterAid 2023 and Avalon this year! I'm pretty squeamish when it comes to public toilets but is wasn't that bad, breath through your mouth, wear the gloves provided and never look down! Campsite is in a great spot, behind the Eavis's farmhouse, with hot showers and great catering in the next field with a subsidised bar (shared with the recycling crew) though the camping field does have quite a slope and you're packed in but everyone was friendly and respectful, but take ear plugs. Our Loo crew Shifts were 4x 6 hours, but spread over the 24 hour clock and five days so as an example we worked: Wed. 6pm - midnight, Thu. midnight to Friday 6am, Sat. 6am - noon and Sunday 6pm - midnight. But has been mentioned 'travel time' is included, so on early shift you could roll out of bed fifteen minutes before you start, sign in in the camping field and then walk to your starting point, we were SE Corner that took at least forty minutes to walk there, longer if it was crowded and then the same going home, so if you're volunteering at a far point the shift ends up being closer to four hours rather than six. You also get reasonable breaks during your shift and as been mentioned you can be in the middle of the action as you walk around the site and people are SO grateful for what you're doing, imagine the SE Corner loos at 4am, quite the spot, but tens if not hundreds of people thanked us for the cleanish loos! Of course Oxfam has it's advantages, parking next to the campsite, more space etc., I had eight hour shifts on a quiet vehicle gate that did drag, but I could breath through my nose... Either way you're in the fields and not watching on the tv, good luck! Steve

Spoiler alert: Everyone who goes will have a great time and it’ll sell out again next year.

This is not the reason this happens, even if it is true that compared to Europe, we get far fewer gigs. But these corporate festivals like Lollapalooza are full of middle-upper class kids/young adults who are all about their social media. They are not poor and can afford stuff like this and more. Like the south american version of Coachella. I've been to the first 4 or 5 of them here. But each year it seems these festivals lean way more into that social group. We have plenty of people that can afford stuff like this (specially in the big cities) although obviously way more people cannot. Lollapalooza has been happening here, in Brazil and Chile for about 10 years now. Primavera landed here as well, two years ago. That's because there's enough people that can afford it. Although in our particular case (ARG) that trend might stop very soon.

Pretty sure I've been to the festival more than all those that have thus far contributed to this thread and I don't share the sentiment about the line up, already plenty I'd like to see and that list will massively fill out. As ever there were some acts hoped for which have played before and would have delighted others, but I'd have just shrugged at, so I don't pine for them. I come from the olden days when there were two stages for and many of the acts on the second one were not well known. Also there were often some acts on the Pyramid who had played before.

No need to have your today ruined with the lineup, wait until tomorrow for that XD

Yes plan is to have a Monday night Tow and Hitch meet again for whoever from efests is on site on the Monday. I'll post more details closer to the festival and have also set up a WhatsApp group in the past.

I thoroughly get what you are saying. I also recognise the zeal (and hope) on this thread. This will sound like I'm blowing my own trumpet, but its not meant to sound that way - I have entered all the competitions (including paying £10 for one entry) so that I could gift the tickets to a couple of people on this thread. It would be ace if at least one person on here got a couple of Golden Tickets.

I always await the poster knowing that there won't be that much that is for me outside of The Park and Woodsies. But, this year, I probably have more on this poster than many other years! I'm as excited as ever and, more importantly, like a child on Christmas Eve in anticipation of the heady mayhem of the area drops. Truly my favourite time of the year! Ben

And a reminder that the access facilities are not for people with temporary impairments such as broken bones, healing wounds or woman who are pregnant. Unfortunately, the Festival cannot offer closer parking, reserve camping or assistance getting on/ off and around the site to people with temporary impairments. Happy to answer any questions about the facilities offered, Spring Ground campsite or East Accessible Campervan Area as I have stayed in both. I have also volunteered in the Accessible Marquee with Oxfam Festival Stewards. 😊

I just felt that given your accusations, it was important to address these things publicly: The "facts" you've complained about being hidden/moderated have been you calling another forum user something insulting. We're not hiding or restricting links to sources, to pieces of news, etc, we're hiding people throwing insults and accusations at each other. And if you want to talk about cliquey things being forum death - way back ~2009 on these forums, you told me and others off for having a personal argument on these forums - saying that was just cliquey arguments and that these forums weren't about us. I respected that then, and I wish you'd respect that now. Bringing personal arguments onto the forums, and dragging the conversation around to what you specifically know/believe about other individuals is cliquey, isn't welcoming to people outside of that. That is exactly what we've been moderating you for, and exactly what we're trying to reduce.
