Back outside with the sun worshippers in front of the Radio 1 NME Stage, Calvin Harris lifts his arms skywards and tries to tempt his following into a lunchtime party.

Unfortunately it's 30 seconds of his opening song 'Disco Heat' before his mic kicks in, but he compensates for the delay, by barking at the crowd to "put your hands in the air".

Harris is a committed performer and a charismatic frontman, pacing the stage, bouncing on the spot, inviting the crowd to "go off" and playing the local hero card, by announcing his Scottish roots.

'Acceptable in the 80s' has a hint of Flight Of The Conchords doing Bowie about it, but it's an infectious crowd-pleaser that has the front section of the audience bopping along quite nicely before Harris' band twist it into a sprawling extended version. With live drums, keyboards, guitars and synths, they produce a big party sound.

The radio-friendly, poppy 'The Girls' is equally popular, with its high-pitched disco chorus, but the true highlight of his short set is the closer 'I'm Not Alone'.

Its unbridled, joyful trance-pop strains soar above the rest of his slightly camp, disco-infused material and the song already sounds like one of the anthems of this summer's festival circuit, with its reflective opening giving way to the massive synth stabs of the chorus.
