Fancy-dress

The theme for 2013 has been announced as 'Running Away From The Circus'. The theme will take over the festival site with interactive theatre, art installations and costumes.

For the first time ever, the festival will house an on-site circus with The Standon Calling Big Top showcasing live circus acts by day and a fantastic array of bands and DJs by night. Everywhere festival-goers venture they'll stumble upon pockets of performance, themed sideshows and secret areas.

Festival-goers can actually become part of the circus and perform at Standon Calling in front of friends, family and fellow festival-goers. The art of illusion, clowning, fire juggling, slack rope walking and even violin playing whilst stilt walking will all be possible. Ticket holders can purchase an add-on ticket priced at £50 entitling them to join Standon People's Circus and gain entry to the festival site two days early (Wednesday 31st July) for professional circus skill training and a special Thursday night crew dinner ahead of performances to the public.

Friends and family of budding performers can also gain early access to the site to support loved ones by purchasing an add-on ticket at £20.

Those attending during the weekend itself also have a chances to experience circus life first-hand courtesy of Gorilla Circus' flying trapeze classes. Running Friday, Saturday and Sunday festival ticket holders can pre-book at a price of £30 a 90 minute class which will see them taking to the air. For the more sensitive stomached attendees each day will also feature two short slots for 'try and fly' at £6 each with no pre-booking necessary.

During the day people can enjoy a drink in the on-site pub, The Strongman's Arms, which will host sessions including the Science of Building a Human Pyramid, the Art of Whipping, Conquer Your Fear of Clowns, Art Macabre Life Drawing and a Circus Smell Safari.

Unsigned compeition

Standon Calling is running a competition for offer one lucky unsigned act to win a slot at this year's festival. Unsigned artists within Herts & Essex area can submit their details online at: http://www.thegigreview.co.uk/festival-fresh - along with a link to one of their tracks and the artist profile/website. There will be a 4 week entry window running from May 27th to June 24th. Once that window has closed, an expert panel of judges will pick out their favourite final 3 acts. The final 3 acts will then perform at a local (Herts) venue (yet to be decided) in July, where a final act will be chosen to grace the stage at Standon Calling.

On site

There are numerous stages and the odd unexpected stage appearing from nowhere. The festival boasts a number of bars, one of which is hewn out of an enormous oak tree, secret areas, interactive theatre, swimming pool (with underwater dance area), boutique camping (beach huts, yurts and tipis), kids area, and festival food.

Ethos

The organisers are trying to make this festival as ethical and green as possible, recycling all and sundry and sourcing locally where possible and they are raising money for charity too.
