Exeter Summer Festival 2008

A city council sponsored event featuring more than 40 live events and exhibitions plus a wide range of music, both classical and contemporary; dance; drama; family events; and street theatre. Many events are free.

Performances from recognised names such as Ardal O'Hanlon, Sir John Mortimer, Eliza Carthy and London Mozart Players also sit alongside newer and more challenging jazz performances from Jef Neve Trio from Belgium, aerial theatre from Ockham's Razor and a performance in Exeter Cathedral by Acoustic Triangle renowned for their site specific performance mixing jazz and classical music.

The festival also includes Exeter Urban Live - a two day Underground Music festival taking place over three Live Stages at The Phoenix and the Cavern, and featuring on 21st June: Get Cape. Wear Cape. Fly; Vincent Vincent & the Villains; I Was A Cub Scout; Peggy Sue And The Pirates; The Brunettes; The Computers; and Rollo Tomassi (tbc).

There is also a special Artrocker Underage Show in the Rocksound Marquee at Exeter Phoenix on the 22nd July. As part of Exeter Urban Live, this is a special underage show for under 18s - Get Cape. Wear Cape. Fly; I was a Cubscout; Peggy Sue and the Pirates; Popular Workshop; Trash Fashion; plus much more!

Exeter Festival goes international in 2008 with hot Cuban rhythms from Candido Fabre, the colourful Sacred Music and Dance from the Tibetan monks of Tashi Lhunpo Monastery; the Moscow Ballet and the pulsating mix of mandingo polyphonies and kora from N'Faly Kouyate and his band Dunyakan from Belgium and West Africa. Concerts in the Cathedral and on Cathedral Green, storytelling in the Guildhall and free street theatre in Princesshay will allow festival-goers the opportunity to sample both the city's heritage buildings and modern design.

Live music takes place at various venues including the Cavern, and the Northcott, and features music from across the spectrum such as world, rock, folk, and reggae music plus Exeter Respect Weekend at the Phoenix Arts Centre and classical performances at the Cathedral. Other events are likely to include a Craft Festival, Lammas Fair, Comedy Club, and talks.
