Latitude becomes the second festival to offer a school's day

Providing a school curriculum at festivals is becoming increasingly necessary it seems as this weekend's Latitude Festival becomes the second festival to offer a school's day after Bearded Theory's Free Bearded School first launched the idea earlier this summer.

Both festivals had to gain approval to provide national curriculum learning outside the classroom, which is becoming increasingly necessary as schools impose fines on parents for taking their kids to festivals in term time. This is clearly a provision more and more festivals are likely to follow.

Nearly all festivals are a great place for kids offering huge potential for them to develop and it's surprising that both events have had to be recognised as providing educational provision, and seek to be recognised as being as valuable to child development as museums, art galleries, nature reserves and learning centres. Any parent will tell you that taking your kids to a family friendly festival is a great way to enhance their learning and life experience.

Latitude Festival’s first Schools Day, is taking place in conjunction with Culture Works East and Norfolk and Norwich Festival Bridge will take place on Friday 17th July, the last day of the 2015 summer term. Latitude will welcome students and teachers from Primary and Secondary Schools all over East Anglia with specially priced tickets, and, like Bearded Theory before it, will offer a fully curated schools programme and a range of activities and workshops.

Sharon Reuben, Kids, Teen and Family programmer has said: “I’m proud and excited to welcome students from across the region to this ground-breaking event. I want students to explore everything around them, enjoy the world class activities and stunning environment, and leave us feeling inspired by science, literature, music, art and the joy of new experiences!”

The programme of events includes:

* Human Forensics investigates DNA, footwear marks and fibres, Geology Rocks study volcanic activity while the Astronomy Lab explores the planets.
* The Talent Studio run musical theatre workshops with performers from top West End shows or students can Have a Go At Shakespeare.
* The Jam Hubs will allow young people to perform and practice using electric guitars, keyboards, bass and drums….or they can learn rhythm, rhyme and Beat Boxing from a pro.
* International best-selling children’s author Alexander Gordon Smith leads engaging workshops, developing characters and storylines and exploring the joy of reading and writing.

The programme is designed to support KS2 and KS3 and give local children an inspiring taste of the cultural riches available to them.

Latitude isn't just about music and colourful sheep, but has a full spectrum of art including film, comedy, theatre, cabaret, dance, poetry, literature and art together for a fun-filled, cultural adventure by the sea.

The 10th Latitude which has a capacity of 35,000 will take place from tomorrow - Thursday 16th to Sunday19th July 2015.

An adult weekend ticket is priced at £192.50 with a Family Camping option also available, a teen weekend ticket is priced at £132.50, with a weekend ticket for all children aged 5 -12 years priced at £8.
