The East Bay's kings were at the forefront of the development of punk rock, and especially third-wave ska, in the mid-90s along with peers Green Day and The Offspring.
Rancid officially celebrate their 20th anniversary next year and will be bringing with them an arsenal of hits stockpiled from seven studio albums, their last, 'Let the Dominoes Fall', was released in 2009.
A statement from organisers says, "We are happy to announce our first headline band for Rebellion 2012. And its Rancid who will be Sunday Empress headliners. We are very chuffed after 16 years of trying to get them they finally have said yes!"
There have also been a few other acts announced including the Canadian 'founders' of hardcore punk DOA, fellow Canadians SNFU, Indianapolis hardcore punk quartet Zero Boys, and Splodge.
There are no acts confirmed yet for this, one of the world's biggest punk festivals, which offers 4 days of music across 4 stages with masses of bands, plus loads of stalls.
Early bird weekend tickets are priced at £95. Day tickets will be available at a later date. This is a saving of at least £20 if you buy defore 31st October.
