this week's fashion statement: start wearing wellies
Mon 18th Jun 07

Glastonbury Festival Glastonbury Festival 2007

We can all dream of brilliant sunshine for Glastonbury this week, but it looks as though it will only be a dream. Depending where you look weather forecasts vary a little, but they all have common theme: rain.

While it's possible that Glastonbury might escape a torrential downpour as happened in 2005, and that new drainage systems around Worthy Farm might improve things a little from how they'd be without them, the reality is likely to be mud, mud, and more mud.

With the soil being clay-based, the ground drains worse than it might do at other festivals and those people new to Glastonbury who have experienced other wet and muddy festivals are about to discover another difference about Glastonbury. The mud you might have experienced elsewhere is likely to be very mild compared to what Worthy Farm is likely to be like this week.

It's always amazing to see people arriving with just flip-flops: have these people never seen a field before? And it's always amazing to see people queuing for hour after hour after hour, to buy some of the wellies for sale on site.

Save yourself - and your feet - some hassle: take wellies. Although decent boots might survive and keep your feet dry, you're likely to need to spend your whole time watching where you walk, picking your way through the drier bits. If it's muddy there'll be no avoiding it, with 350,000 feet churning up every bit of ground.

They might not look the coolest, but with wellies you can walk wherever you like, and forget about the mud and enjoy the festival to the full.
