the Sonic Forest comes to Glastonbury
experience a mix of music, nature, lights and sounds...

Sonic Forest, the brainchild of composer and architect Christopher Janney, will be coming to this year's Glastonbury Festival.

the Pyramid Stage

Situated in the Glebe Land Theatre Field, the Sonic Forest is composed of 16 eight-foot columns, each containing audio speakers, lights and photo-electric sensors that enable up to 4 people to interact with each column at once. With a total of 64 possible places to play, the experience will be like one big “communal musical instrument.” These columns resemble electronic ‘trees’ for that truly ‘green’ Glastonbury experience.

Festival-goers will be able to enjoy the multi-sensory interactive ‘Sonic Forest’ as they pass between the ‘trees’. Able to ‘play’ the columns as they go by, people will trigger the sensors by touch or movement producing an ever-changing score of melodic tones, environmental sounds, spoken or whispered texts, all of which will be accompanied by varying effects of light.

Revellers will also be able to trigger pre-programmed sensory experiences including a flock of birds, frogs or crickets crawling through the Forest, or even a swarm of fireflies passing overhead. After midnight each night, festival drummers will be encouraged to convene at the 'Sonic Forest' and play in a drum jam into the sunrise.

The full line-up for Glastonbury Festival will be announced tomorrow morning (Friday 1st June) - you'll find all the details on eFestivals.
