We've just had a phone call from the main tickets person at Glastonbury Festival, and been told that all tickets have now sold out. Last year it took 26 hours for all 112,000 tickets to be sold, this year has taken 24 hours.
However, this year has experienced worse problems for buyers than last year. With all tickets being sold only through one agent - aloud - they have been overwelmed, and unable to cope.
Statements from the organisers have implied that the demand was unexpected ... but probably only by them. The rest of the world knew exactly when they were going to be trying to get tickets ... so why didn't the Festival, and aloud?
This year's system has at least given everyone a theoretically equal chance of placing an order. Those that expected to have to try and try and try again - and stayed up all night trying - seemed to have (in the main) succeeded.
No system was every going to be perfect. Everyone should be grateful that the Festival decided to not use price to dampen demand - the normal mechanism for a capitalist world. It was always known that there wouldn't be enough tickets to go around, and some would be disappointed.
