Shell Islands 60th birthday party weekend

I used to go to Shell Island a lot during my 20's and 30's, and have some fantastic memories of being there with a load of my mates. I recall being in the bar there one night during a severe storm, and them announcing every now and again a pitch number and telling the owners that their tents had just blown off from their moorings had had been blown out to sea. Fortunately only one of our tents had collapsed but not been blown away, because we were in a dip in the dunes. However, we still couldn't stay in the tents as the biting wind was blowing through them. So, about eight of us had to huddle together in the back of a transit van. The person who huddled in front of me was the only woman in the group. To cut a long story short she was (and still is) an attractive lady, and made her huddling in a little bit naughty. So naughty in fact that it ended up with me fingering her. I thought we'd got away with it (the other people not knowing what we had done), and it was only a year or two later when I discovered that we hadn't got away with it, as it was directly referenced to in conversation by someone else!

Apologies if the later bit of  the above was more information than you needed,  but I just remembered it, so thought I'd write it down.

That sounds A-MAZING. Report back, eh? x

So, returned from a truly exceptional alternative to Glastonbury, http://www.nablusfestival.org/. Crossed the wall from Jerusalem into the occupied West Bank and stayed in Nablus for 3 days. Impressions were of the wonderfully friendly Palestinians who despite the odds are doing OK. The Festival is in it's 3rd year and trying to bring some culture to an area that so much needs all the support they can get. Family life is of course so strong in that part of the world, but there is little else for them. When it comes to what we would seek in the way of 'entertainment' and night life...there's almost nothing.

The crucial difference between the festival and anything in the UK was the 'cause' was everything, and was directly impacting and integral to the city & it's people, not some faintly distant 'for charity' enterprise. I loved the experience, admit to being apprehensive on arrival, the quality of the music was variable (Kindest words I can use), the Bristol band Chai For All played if anyone knows them, as were some Chilean protest singers, a weird, ambient Japanese act, and as per the photo below, my son playing in the refugee camp. Google Project Hope Palestine if anyone is interested in volunteering for a good cause.

(As an experience, travelling through Israel, Jordan & The West Bank/Palestine was stunning).

It doesn't look like it'll be that expensive. If i'm reading it right then you can buy your food/drink tokens in advance for 2.50 Euros each. Which is a lot cheaper than any festival in the UK.

Potentially drive over to save money on flights etc. I reckon it could be done for around £500 which would be fantastic value for money.

I've never been to Belgium either so that's another bonus!

I went once. It was closed. Only joking - I've had great fun there. I nearly ended up in a casino one night, but, fortunately, the owner of our hotel wouldn't give us our passports back, and the casino wouldn't let us in without our passports. What followed was a beautiful piece of art though. Worthy of it's place in any drunken campaign.

Oh, and when we got back home, I discovered one of the hotel towels in my bag. Fuck knows how it got in there, as I am normally quite meticulous. I think it may have been the result of having to get out of the hotel, like yesterday, in order to not miss the ferry home. I'm really not one for taking stuff from hotels, but I treasured that towel (until I lost it! The towel, that is!).

Yeah but food costs more than one token, and one token gets you like half a pint.

QOTSA at Finsbury Park and just got a ticket for Rolling Stones in Croke Park Dublin. Hard to get away when running a guest house but we have cover for QOTSA and a pass out to go home from himself for RS. That'll do me this year unless something else comes up closer to home.

My friends messaged me last night asking if I fancy Rock Werchter. I have to admit I've never heard of it but the lineup looks pretty strong this year! https://www.rockwerchter.be/en/

Has anyone been before?

Haven't been but has arguably the best line up in Europe imo. If I hadn't of booked Mad Cool i'd be seriously considering Werchter.

I need to do more than just Bearded so now weighing up going to Feis in Liverpool. Only a one day thing but since Shane Macgowan has been added I'm tempted.

God knows what he'll be like, or even if he's going to be performing or just waving at the crowd. He didn't look well at the birthday event that was thrown for him a few months back but it's been years since I've seen him.

When I did last see him he was performing with The Popes and only did about 20 minutes as they came on so late and had the plug pulled when the curfew hit. His parting words were him promising he'd be back. Not sure if this counts.

Was hoping to go to Beautiful days but unfortunately after many attempts couldn't persuade my friend ... so we are off to cream in butlins in December instead ... he prefers the much cleaner aspect .. not sure Im brave enough to do a festival on my own ... I do have Showhawk Duo this coming weekend in Bristol (anyone on here going ? ) which ive been really looking forward to as nights out with friends are very rare these days .... and a 90s dance tribute night on my Birthday booked after a visit to the farm ... 2 days after finishing work at the place ive worked for 23 years .. so change is afoot :)

Wow, that is a line-up. As someone else said, if only no responsibilities (sigh)

Ah, I thought it might have been a bit too good to be true!

Due to the situation my friends don't want any money for the actual ticket so I only have to pay my travel and food/drink. Priced up driving and gettin g the Eurotunnel, which seems like a pretty cost effective way of doing things.

Got a bit married. Went to Budapest after it. Going to Berlin on a mates stag in May. Best man at a mates wedding June. Going to Bali on honeymoon in July. Satisfying my music needs with Liam G at Finsbury, Arctics in Birmingham as well as ELO at the same venue. With a major countdown for GF tickets in October!!!

That'll do!
