Upside down frowner
Article in the Guardian this morning detailing the issue of homelessness in the countryside around the festival. https://www.theguardian.com/inequality/2018/jan/10/rural-idyll-homelessness-hits-the-countryside?CMP=Share_iOSApp_Other
Yoghurt on a Stick
but resident Nicholas Shipton believes the service should be provided by the state. “We should judge ourselves on how we look after our weak members,” he says. “If we’re not doing that, we’re not doing a good job on anything.” This statement sums it up for me. Although there are many religious groups who help the homeless nationally, it would appear to me that assistance in this area should be secular. That said, I wonder what the homelessness landscape would look like without the assistance of these religious philanthropists? Very very bleak, I should imagine.
guypjfreak
My aunt is a vicar person has their own church and all shout halliulla... But she's as tight as but it makes her and her church feel good to help even though she goes back home to her lovely pad.. I've got quite a few friends that are homeless right now.. They are settling down in a nice place just round the corner in fact.. The thing is and I don't mean all homeless people BUT you would be amazed at the amount of homeless people want to stay just that homeless...... Tis a funny old world old son

I don't doubt that for a moment. I guess the problem is that those that do want a home aren't being catered for, and it's them that we, as a society, need to help. In terms of being a traveler of the road, I must confess to having had romantic notions of it in the past. The things that you would see, hear, witness would, in my opinion, make for a richer life than many experience. However, the realities of that kind of life might be dangerous, or too much to bear. Hello guy, I don't doubt you for a second. There will be people who want to remain homeless for whatever reason. However, I don't think that we, as a society, can say that we are doing everything for those people who don't have homes, and do want one.

That can not be argued with old son Just watched question time saying how in some places people own 2 or 3 homes.. Good luck to them but as a lady said right at the end if you own a Ferrari you pay extra tax ect which I thought was a good point. But imo there are a lot of houses out there that are owned by the council and are empty that could be used.. Unfortunately as we are a sea side town we will see an influx of the travelling homeless community heading this way we always do.. I mean on a hot evening when you've done a hard day's begging... ( and they usually work in teams of 4 ) what could be worse than heading to some quiet spot and getting hammered and crashing out on some grass or sand.. They can't sleep on the beach anymore cos it's all camered up but we have lots of lovely places just behind the beach lol.. I know this cos before baby Ruby came along I was walking a knife edge between being a piss head and a alcoholic so there was many a time that I would be in one of these places... Lol I laugh about it now but thank my lucky stars for my wife and kid.... Especially baby Ruby Happy Sunday old son

Lol I laugh about it now but thank my lucky stars for my wife and kid.... Especially baby Ruby Happy Sunday old son I know about the empty houses problem. I worked for a housing charity for 28 years. It was a large charity with over 30,000 properties. I used to have to visit the empty properties on my patch every two weeks to check on their security etc. This was a requirement of our insurers. Well, the list of empty properties got that long that I had to go to my boss and say that I haven't got the time to visit all these properties and do my normal job too. The solution was to 'outsource' the inspections to a contractor. Yet more money down the drain. Now I know the reasons why some properties remain empty for some time, but not all empty properties had reasons for being empty. I did try to create a fuss about it, but at the end of the day, I was banging my head against a bureaucratic wall. In the mean time these properties were being broken in to and destroyed by people nicking the copper pipes etc. I had one property alone where 100 grands worth of damage was done. We did have security screens and alarms etc but even they proved ineffective (and costly in themselves).

No I know that if this were to happen the place would be wrecked.. So hey ho it can't happen... And that there is life old son Hello guy, Yeah, I know what you are saying. When I worked for the housing charity I had to deal with loads of squatters. On the one hand I didn't give a fuck about them squatting the empty places. I mean, why not use an empty place for shelter and warmth. Makes total sense to me. However, in the vast majority of cases they'd really turned the squats in to night clubs. I used to walk in afterwards to survey and quantify the damage etc to get the property back on line and the places were, without doubt, abused. I've lost track of the number of times that I've gone in to properties and seen the doors ripped off, only to have the prices of drinks written on them next to the bars that people had set up. It was totally commercial, and not even in the vein of being of socialist value. I did experience a very odd thing on one occasion when I was inspecting a very large property that the charity owned and was empty. I don't know what made me do it but I drove to the property at about 7.30pm one evening. Now there were people breaking in to this property all the time, and making my life a complete misery. They were also stealing from a housing charity. Normally, I'll admit, my MO would be to let people who haven't got anything crack on with it. However, I was working for a charity, and these break ins were doing my head in. Anyway, to cut a long story short, I arrived there only to see someone climbing in to the property. He was four storeys up and climbing in through a dormer window. I thought 'fuck this, I've had enough, I'm calling the police'. So, I duly did, what in my heart of hearts I didn't want to do, and called the police. Their station was literally less than a mile away and they came rushing down the hill to the house. They asked me to go in with them, which I duly did. Inside, on the top floor they found several people who should not have been there. Now get this - one of them was my e dealer! Now I saw him and he saw me, but not a word was said. I met my dealer a week or so later and apologized. I told him that if I knew that he was in there I'd have just gone in and told him to get the fuck out. There was another bloke there, who was the bloke who had climbed four storeys to get in to the property. I'm not that way inclined, but feel confident to say that he was a very good looking, tall, broad, athletic man. Now I saw him again some considerable time later in the same area. He was dishevelled and in a wheelchair because he had lost the use of his legs. Apparently he'd shot the veins in his legs to pieces with heroin, and lost the use of them. Strangely enough, I saw the bloke yet again some years later. I was a volunteer for another charity that set up for Christmas only every year. They set up at Christmas because a lot of the other homeless etc service providers in Birmingham shut up for the Christmas week. Anyway, I saw him there and he was still smiling and laughing despite his lot. This is the charity that I gave a few of my Christmas holidays up for (see link below). It would be true to say that my Christmas's then were the proverbial busmans holiday. https://www.birminghamchristmasshelter.org/
guypjfreak
That's funny and sad at the same time.. But in that story old son you have answered all of the questions that people have to ask them selves.. Yes we should help..... But do they help themselves.... No not all the time.... Shame about the climbing bloke but that's what happens.. Horrible drug that is..
