Festivals aren't the cash cow that some imagine, so if sales are short a lot of money can be lost.

And Boardmasters is smaller than they've been doing or you'd imagine an Other headliner to do. No disrespect to it, of course

No disrespect to it, of course actually, i think boardmasters is 50,000 - so not so small. But they're not the draw they used to be, anyway. I've always seen Bestival as a bit more on the pulse of current music than to go for the Chems again if they've got other options open to them (tho you never know, a nostalgia set in a few years time is something I could see happening). Homer
Fine - but the real comparison is the size they were when they were booked in 2007 compared to the size of what is being booked now. they were booking other stage headliners. Homer
Though the Chems headlined other (and Bestival) in 2014. Another album and they would easily do it again. It was rammed.

Yep, but as I've already pointed out, you can't book bands of the same profile today for the same price. The prices have out-stripped inflation by a fair chunk. From chats with a few bookers over recent years, they've all basically said they've had to increase the bookings budget to get acts of the same level, or they've had to downsize their expectations to match the size of their budget. arteet
The other stage headliners were Major Laz / Alt-J / BBK last year. Id day London Grammar and M.I.A are better than that. Maybe not ‘bigger’ but I wouldn’t even consider going Bestival if they were the headliners

I'd guess it's a case that they're popular to see - perhaps much as they were - but their ability to generate ticket sales isn't what it was. I get that. But 2007 was 20,000 and this is 35,000. And flying in the Beastie Boys to play twice is SUCH a bigger move than London Grammar! Joshuwarr
I purchased my tickets before seeing the line up. Not too disappointed, but I made sure I didn't get my hopes up either. Very happy to see MIA headline as she was great in the Big Top a few years back. Chaka Khan will be great fun too. Would love for Britney to headline, but the Arcade Fire rumours are exciting as well.

Personally I wouldn't think that of Britney - tho I'm sure plenty would - but would do if it were Arcade Fire.
jackarmy
The more I look at it, the more I think it's been a good move to have at least 2 female headliners on the main stage, even if I've seen them both before at Bestival in the last few years. Getting lots of good press, interesting that this article says 60% of the attendees at Bestival are female: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-42972902 On a different note, I wonder if they're getting rid of the Invaders of the Future stage? It had terrible noisebleed issues last year, Fatman Scoop on HMS Bestival drowned out Honeyblood (no mean feat...)

smogo
I can't find it now, but last night there was a stage listed on the website as "Lit Stage - Needs a New Name".... But that could be a "new blood" type stage.

Invaders of the Future was my one dissapointment last year due to the noisebleed and also I thought the booking on that stage wasn’t that strong with 3 or 4 exceptions. (I run a new music blog so maybe I’m too specialist!) Mind you, there’s hope for this year - some strong new music in The Big Top so hopefully the same for this stage. Cuckoo Clump has Reggae Roots listed and I assume that wont be there as the Vic Reeves reggae set is Club Dada as is "Reggae Roots Ft.." EDIT - my guess is Invaders of the Future wont be there. First thought was Dolly Parton as RDB has been after her for years, but the first letter looks like a 'S' or a 'C' to me. As The Wonderwhy pointed out earlier in the thread, they don't tend to put the actual name on these things (presumably as it'd be easy to work out). Same happened with Governor's Ball earlier this year and the first three letters looked like 'LCD' (you could tell from the last couple of letters and the length that it wasn't LCD Soundsystem, mind), and then it turned out to be James Blake and it was clear they hadn't used his name on the initial poster. Probably just put a random string of letters underneath.
