Condolences. I'd have been beside myself if I'd not been in a prime spot for it. agree with all sentiment here. truly the gig of my life, especially if you love Glastonbury like we all do and went through years and years of false rumours of "this will be the year" & to finally have it ...I only got a ticket in the resale for '13 (thanks @digi ) but what a day it was, especially with the prime spot I managed, even if it meant i missed the likes of Stevie Winwood, Rodriguez to go in before Elvis at 5pm and stopping drinking from 5 until about an hour left in the Stones set knowing a loo trip was within sight set. just a wonderful early afternoon all the good spirit during the wait, etc...what a day! just a shame that Jumping Jack Flash sounds so average on the youtube...it was brilliant where i was... paulshane
1 Roger Waters 2 Bowie 3 REM 4 Neds Atomic Dustbin (last time they played, 2005 I think) got right to the front and loved every second. 5 Underworld in 98 and last year, also got to the front for both of those. 6 Courtney Barnett - she's just brilliant. strummer77
Really hard to do this, and I'm probably forgetting tons, but- 1. Rolling Stones, 2013 - Euphoric. Just an amazing moment to be a part of. 2. Iggy & the Stooges, 2007 - Chaos and my first Glastonbury. Wonderful. 3. LCD Soundsystem, 2016 - Third here, but could have been number one - probably the best crowd I've been a part of. 4. Billy Bragg, 2016 - This was on the day of the EU referendum when everyone seemed confused about the world around them. An amazing tonic. Again could be number one. 5. Pulp, 2010 - Only a part time Pulp fan but Jarvis was great from start to finish. Starting with 'Do You Remember The First Time' and ending with 'Common people' - was amazing. 6. QOTSA, 2010 - Great setlist and a wonderful way to end one of my favourite Glastonburys. 7. Radiohead, 2017 - My favourite band in my favourite place - and should be higher but for some talkers around me early on. However from EEIRP onwards it was euphoric and enjoyed the last hour with total strangers, everything Glastonbury is about. 8. Arctic Monkeys, 2007 - My first headliner at 16 and the band of the moment. The moment I was hooked on the festival. 9. Chemical Brothers, 2015 - Great as always, but this was my favourite. 10 (joint). Metallica, 2014 - Haven't listened to them before or since, but went along and thought they smashed it. The loudest I've ever heard the Pyramid Stage. 10 (joint). Gorillaz, 2010 - A proper marmite set in hindsight, but to see Albarn, half The Clash, Womack, Snoop and Loud fuckin' Reed... I was down the front and it was great. Honourable mentions to The Hives, Bruce, Bobby Womack, the Verve (genuinely) and Stevie Wonder and the hundreds of others I have forgotten! I mean, I knew I was going to see them, but never imagined getting such a good position. Euphoric is the right word. I certainly was. Phoning and texting people. Boasting of my amazing good fortune and luck. Loved every minute of that night. However. Got back home. Went to watch the set on iPlayer... and was woefully unimpressed. OK, MJ's world class stagecraft and presence came across well, but it definitely didn't sound as good as I remembered it. The phrase "I guess you had to be there" never felt more appropriate. Godammit this thread is hard to answer. To do it properly I'd have to dig out the old programmes (or Wiki as OP suggests). Been going regularly since '04 after doing '95 and taking nine years to get back. So, I'll post one that really stands out: Portishead. Acoustic. 1995. Oh, and, thinking about it, as I haven't mentioned it for ages: England v Portugal 2004 European Cup. Pyramid screens. Even though we lost. Imagine if we'd won? Best Thursday ever! What a crowd, and what a reintroduction to that field (and the festival as a whole) for me. And. Obviously McCartney that year. Pre festival, idiot me was moaning along the lines of "...bloody boring has beens, Glasto's supposed to be about happening, of the moment bands and acts". I can't think of anything I've been more wrong about in my life. Just a fantastic experience. Live and Let Die was written to be performed with fireworks. Led the way for lots and lots of future legend headliners. I still can't believe '09 with Springsteen and Neil Young on the same bill. And Blur put in possibly the gig of the decade that same year. Amy Lawn
Imagine watching a Beatles cover band when actual real Keef, Micks Jagger and Taylor, and Charlie Watts are on stage a couple hundred yards away, and they're on form and playing hit after hit. stuartbert two hats
I wonder if there was anyone at Chas'n'Dave in 2005 that doesn't rate it as one of the all time greats. So fucking random, but the stars aligned that day for some reason to result in a gig that was just incredible.
