New security measures in place

Hmmm. Not sure what to do now in terms of arrival time.

I've currently got a coach booked which would arrive at the site at about 14:30.

I've also got the option of a lift from a friend who currently plans to start queuing about 4am. He is however notorious for changing his mind.

Or I could change my coach time to arrive at the site at 05:30. This would cost a tenner to change though unfortunately and I run the risk of getting through the gates before other members of my party and ending up waiting for a while inside the gates. Only 3 seats left on it too so I need to make a decision soon.

Crumbs.

Your car will be checked too

First up, we encourage you to pack as light as you can. For security reasons, all ticket holders will be subject to extra searches of their vehicles, their bags and their person at this year’s Festival.

I haven't read the whole thread, so apologies if this has been asked before, but are you actually saying that all ticket holders will be inspected, or that there's an increased chance of all ticket holders being inspected? There's a huge difference.

As an aside, I heavily suspect that Russy's Kindergarten egg approach to getting stuff in will have a renaissance so large that it eclipses the size of the original movement (if you'll excuse the pun). There's going to be a lot of humans laying eggs on that there dairy farm this year;

I know, I only noticed this myself about 20 minutes ago.  I have prescription medicine to take in, but was also planning on taking other perfectly legitimate things (ranitidine for heartburn for example, and some paracetamols for the hangover).  I guess I can pick up at the on site pharmacies

As long as it's in the original packaging it should be fine. Just don't try and save space by putting a bunch of different unmarked pills into a single container.

I noticed the email says:

Quote

Festival goers will be expected to remain in their cars until the Festival gates open.

Is this new or does it always say this?

I ask as I find this entire thing quite weird. The most vulnerable part of the festival is the queue - you don't need a ticket to be there, you aren't searched before you get there... it almost feels more risky to have a huge build-up of people at the gates. But if they marshal the car parks that could be avoided to a huge extent (park people up in order of arrival, release groups on foot from the car parks in the same order once gates open). You'd want to keep people spread out as much as possible, essentially.

Maybe I'm thick but I don't see how splitting the load over several trips in and out makes things any better/quicker.

We have discussed and on the Wednesday we are just going to take in with us backpacks with the stuff we need for the first few days and leave half of our booze/clothes in the car. Then we can do a Friday or Saturday morning trip back to the car to grab the rest of the bits when hopefully the queues will be less.

The insinuation is exactly that. Which is why I asked for clarification. However, it's only just dawned on me that I don't want to know the answer. And I don't want anybody but the authorities to know the answer to that question.

As an aside, I wonder if there will be a surge in Kindergarten egg sales just prior to the festival?

Which only works if the majority of people don't do that.  And bags of clothes are easy and quick to search compared to tent bags and the like which have to be taken in on the Wed regardless.

I just know I'd rather do one truly tedious queue and be done with it.  I hate leaving the site after Wednesday afternoon.  The outside stops existing.  S'ok though, I'll be in the trolley line with all the other old gits, snacks and a Lenor bottle.

Me and my girlfriend went out this afternoon and spent £30 on food and drinks to take with us, as we can't afford to be paying £10 each every morning for a cup of tea and a bacon roll.

We got beans, tea bags, pasta, etc. Do you think we will still be okay to bring that and our little stove?

We were planning on queueing on Tuesday night, with just our tent and making another trip or two for everything else.

Yeah you'll be fine. Most of the nasty stuff you don't want on site is already banned - they're not gonna start confiscating a load more stuff for the sake of it. The statement about food is just get people to pack lighter as for most people its the obvious thing to be leaving behind

Am I the only person that thinks this is an absolutely pointless exercise, designed to create the illusion of making everybody safer but in reality just going to make Wednesday a nightmare for everybody involved?

Yes, making sure nobody brings in anything to harm other festival goers is pointless!!

Yes this will be fine - the advice is just to avoid long queues with people having to unpack loaded up trolleys, etc. If you are happy to make return trips that's fine but probably best to take enough stuff to see you through Weds night and go back to car Thursday rather than add to the queues on weds by doing multiple journeys. Also it says no queuing Tues- people should remain in their cars!

To be honest I can't see this making a huge amount of difference apart from a small delay in getting through the gates. Sure the festival has said everybody will be searched but as has been pointed out earlier to do so thoroughly it would be logistically impossible to get everyone through the gates on the Wednesday. If they say everyone will be searched and everyone packs expecting to be searched then the queues should still move pretty efficiently.

I don't think the trick isn't to take less than you would normally need, it's to pack in such a way that makes it quick and painless to search.

Not like when you are queueing at the airport and despite being asked several times there is still somebody in front of you that has 50 different tubes of liquids in their bag!

Reading through this thread makes me quite glad I don't have a stash to worry about.

I take the clothes I need, essentials for a day bag and a few cans. I can't really take less than I already do. I aim to start queuing at PGA just before the earliest coaches arrive but I'm still expecting it to take a while. Hopefully they'll work their way through the queue searching people as they go and giving them some sort of 'pre-searched' tag.

I am wondering what asking for bags to be named achieves, unless they do have a plan to put stuff through some sort of airport style machine.

It may be to quickly identify unattended bags without the need to treat it as suspicious.

Bugger - I'll have to try and get an appt at Drs as I'll be taking some oxycodine tablets with me and was planning on taking just one strip rather than the box full.

Tbf that is a controlled drug so a different kettle of fish to what most people would be taking. I wouldnt have tried to go anywhere without the official wrapping and prescription for that.

I remember reading about a guy at some festival somewhere who went to the trouble of hiding his stash in a jar of peanut butter... unfortunately it was a glass jar and got taken away from him

A friend hid quite a bit of stuff in An often used toiletry item going through the airport on a weekend hand luggage only trip...did  not put them in a clear bag and had all his toiletries confiscated!!!!

Talking of airport style searches- at Zoo Project festival at Donnington Park they used metal detectors, even had conveyer belts- this was problem aimed at knives because of the area (been to their festivals in different parts of country and they were not present) people who had large amounts of NOS were caught out.

i think they might have been profiling people, as we were ushered down a queue for a table search.

I think the body searches will most be pat downs and stuff its hard to hide a knife between ya balls

plus i dont think they will even be allowed to like proper get in there with their hands

Exactly this, i dont think ive ever had a pat down by security at Glastonbury but expect that to change. It takes them no time at all and i can imagine them doing it to every single person at some point before wrist band exchange where the queue is not moving too fast anyway.

They'll have a system in place to be a lot more thorough than usual but with minimal impact on queue times. the security company who work Glastonbury are experts remember and will no doubt have specialists working on a strategy. At the end of the day its not just good for everyones safety but also good for their reputation as a business. The security industry is at the most competitive it has ever been so they will want to show that they can handle this.

Last year me and my Dad got searched, we had a trolley and had somehow managed to get into a Gate C queue with 0 people in so were optimum search targets, must have taken about 10 minutes, they didn't fully search the boxes but did root through quite a few bags and top layer on trolley before giving up, the contents of the on the trolley were plastic boxes containing beer crates (I blame the plastic boxes for the faffing) and tent basically. They were also convinced we were drug dealers based on the number of times they asked us are you dealing drugs, maybe drug dealers have organised packing and a trolley to get through the mud, who knows! If they are going to be doing more repeat that I would advise against plastic boxes on a trolley...

I think the unfortunate side effect of this will be even more people turning up earlier. Like last years weather related announcement to not set off if you hadn't already had the effect of people leaving earlier knowing there would be chaos, this year everyone will assume the queues are going to be bigger than normal and therefore 'the earlier you get there, the better' mentality.

They are going to be searching for knives. It is still very very hard to purchase any sort of explosive material and even harder to purchase an automatic weapon, aside from the fact that it would be very hard to smuggle an automatic weapon into Glastonbury. London showed the danger posed by nutters with simple weapons and these searches are a necessary consequence.

The security teams are not going to be making you open every little tin and container. At worst it will be empty your bag on a table, ask you to declare sharp objects and a pat down of everything.
