Them subbing this year was essentially an admittance from them that they're never gonna headline and sub is the best they could hope for. They aren't getting any bigger. It's all downhill from here for them.

I would have said the same about Coldplay

they are more than big enough to headline,  I think them before Edd was very random

2 years is a long time in music.

Taylor Swift and the Arctic Monkeys would probably be the favourites to do it as it stands IMO. Kendrick could well be the other, but I think a grime act is more likely.

New Arctic Monkeys record confirmed for this year apparently, their own tours next year then high profile festival circuit 2019?

Yeah, Coldplay probably have peaked but that peak is being the biggest band in the world. Even if their popularity dips a little they'll still be a huge act and whether people on here like it or not will definitely headline again. Compare that to Biffy who at their peak were more along the lines of Arcade Fire or Kasabian in terms of recent headliners and that peak was at least four years ago.

I would guess so. I have a funny relationship with the Arctic Monkeys. I think they are definitely a lot of rungs up from the indie landfill, I always enjoy them when I hear their stuff, but I hardly listen to them.

The never-ending quandary over headliners.

Big well-known established band - too predictable

Newer band currently ruling the world - not enough back catalogue

Established band with high quality but not chart-troubling - won't pull a crowd

Band with guitars - why do we always have a guitar band?

Rap / hip hop / grime act - not right for Glastonbury / Kanye didn't work

Popular band smashing the charts - too mainstream / bland / poppy

Previous headliner guaranteed to put on a show - safe option

Yeah I find them more consistently very good rather than great, each album always have moments brilliance but one or two duff tracks too.

WWD came out two years ago next week so I assumed the follow-up would be almost done by now. Oh well.

They've only just finished touring though so perhaps they were waiting for the break before starting the new one.

Of all the bands who could step up I think they are one of the most likely, a lot will depend on how this next album is received I guess.

I'd like to see levellers come back to headline a stage in 2019..

Great music. Great back catalogue and seems to fit Glastonbury well even tho they and Mr E seem to have had a falling out in the past..

Better than coldplay or Tyler swift lol

I largely agree, except for this one

"Big well-known established band - too predictable"

If we're talking bands who haven't played before, then the problem is that there aren't enough of them and there's interminable negotiation over fees (Rolling Stones, Fleetwood Mac). Other than Fleetwood Mac, I can't think of any other established bands big enough to play.

AC/DC, GNR , Maiden, Depeche, Pearl Jam, Eminem + Madonna (if not only bands) etc etc

although all of the above will probably never happen

Come on down voted for that........give this genre of music a stage of their own old sons.. Give them a field of their own.... I know some people like it... Christ I'll be even nicer give them a festival of their own......

or just go to your choice of about 20 festivals in almost any year to see them headline a stage.

It's more for the nostalgia of the festival old son.. Or you could just have coldplay again..

Nothing wrong with a bit of nostalgia imo
