O'Doyle Rules
Whatever festival it is, I can't wait to piss off the crowd by "glasto has this" "it's not like glasto" "it should do this, like glasto" yep, I'm going to be that guy! Deaf Nobby Burton
Not 2018 but just had a second look at the Bestival lineup this year and it's pretty bloody good isn't it?
renrutbor
Boomtown and Sziget would be my picks, unfortunately they're both the same weekend or it would be amazing to do both! Boomtown is definitely a younger party crowd, but I'd disagree with those earlier in the thread saying drugs are necessary. This year will be my 3rd (going for my 30th birthday), all drug free, have had an amazing time each time. It's essentially two different festivals at the top and the bottom of the hill. The bottom is much like Shangri La or the SE corner, lots of dnb, alright for a wander through but not really my sort of thing for long periods of time (better with drugs I'd imagine!). The top of the hill is much more chilled out, with reggae, folk, electro swing, etc, and still just as much madness, amazing scenery and weird things to discover behind every door. Have spent nights there in a weird casino playing poker til 6am, watching burlesque and cabaret and sat around chatting in a tiny living room. Much older, more mature crowd at the top of the hill too. Sziget is incredible, much more expensive as it's a full week and obviously you've got travel etc to factor in too, but the atmosphere is the closest I've found to Glastonbury anywhere outside of Glastonbury, very diverse and everyone very friendly. So many other non-music things to do that it doesn't matter that the lineups are a bit crap recently. Plus Budapest is an amazing city, great to explore during the days or nights when there's not many bands you want to see. Probably a good chance we'll end up at Sziget again next year since we're doing Boomtown this year I think but I'd be delighted with either again. When we did Sziget during the last fallow year, our highlight was bumping into Michael Eavis during the Stone Roses! We tried to explain this to the people we'd befriended but they didn't really get it :p.
Rylbld9
I'm going to be looking into Rock Werchter next year. Really wanted to go this year before I got resale tickets for Glasto but couldn't wrangle my friends into it due to the price, even though Glastonbury probably turned out to be just as expensive. The line-up for it this year was one of the best I've ever seen.
Penrhos
I'm tempted by "Secret Solstice" in Iceland - went there last year sightseeing, the place is amazing. Timed it wrong as there was an EDM event the weekend after we left.
Ovechkin
Way Out West - Gothenburg (definitely going) Primavera - Barcelona (early plans - cheap tickets and flights, great weather and a deep lineup) Roskilde maybe..

General Lee
Probably Green Man or End of the Road for me, or possibly Latitude if the line up looks decent. Or Primavera - Barcelona is ace but that will be an expensive one! lI'll keep and eye on the line-ups. EotR is an early favourite as I don't think it has an arena? Green Man looks a really nice location but a higher chance of it pissing down in the Welsh Mountains. I've been latitude before, nice festival, easy to get around and maybe more dry in East Anglia! Though it got muddy when I went before in the last fallow year. Very middle class though. Is Green Man the same?

Hadn't paid much attention to the line up but looking again it really is good. Won't be the same travelling to site without the party ferry but hopefully the new site will be just as spectacular Yeah me too, I've been twice but not since 2014, seen some great headliners there, Elton, the Cure, Snoop! Definitely has the feel of a mini Glastonbury about it. That lineup is seriously to my tastes so I'm very tempted for this year.
Homer
I can def recommend the foreign fest/holiday combo. If you get shiz together and book around Xmas, you can get your flight and ticket for less than a Glasto ticket! Bilbao BBK Primavera Porto Optimus Alive All good. Super Bock Super Rock was the best, but sadly they've moved it apparently. Edited July 1, 2017 by Homer

kalifire
As far as I know there's nothing that comes close to Glasto here in Oz. Splendour is probably the closest they have but there's no real comparison. I'm relocating to the UK for three or four months anyway next year so we'll probably look to do a little European travel and I'll use funds for that instead. At this point I'm also considering holding off until 2020 before coming back, but that's the 23 hour flight I've just taken talking, I expect. calamitymaud
I am not dealing AT ALL well with being home from Glastonbury, never mind the crushing feeling of it being fallow next year. Primavera is the planned replacement next year.

I think I left all my self-control on the bus going to Glasto........ I'm only just functioning again, think it's an age thing, once you're over 50 the Serotonin levels seem to take ages to recover after a 4 night bender. At least the fallow year gives me time to sort out my back and get some serious dieting & training in - felt I just wasn't fit enough this year. Badlands
I'm already on countdown for 2019. My plans next year are exciting and I'm sure I'll have a great time, but there's simply nothing like Glastonbury.

To be honest with you, that sounds better. Even if the drinks were slightly more than the stated 'supermarket prices', the fact that it's refrigerated and you can pick up part of your order and go back each day for more sounds great. No more warm cans
dougal1
I went to NOS Alive in the last fallow year and can highly recommend it. Super cheap even with flights factored in. We didn't bother camping in the heat so got a cheap hostel in the city centre and hopped on the train to/from the festival - perfect for exploring bars afterwards as the festival site itself is basically just a carpark whereas the city is beautiful. Next year for me will probably be spent at a few small Aussie festivals. Roll on 2019

No more warm cans It was more about not allowing your own drinks in the 'arena' which, like most small festivals, has been allowed for the last 19 years. Seems to be standard practice for Global events, shame they are buying up the entire small festival industry in the UK (undoubtedly just to drop them all after the first bad year)
northernsoul
Probably go back 2 Vegas for the Life is Beautiful festival next year. Went in 2015 and 2016. Great weather and expensive but it is Las Vegas afterall!!
ChakaKhant
I can't believe nobody here has mentioned Shambala! Or Utopia as it's also known as. Medium sized festival in the midlands. Diverse music, excellent workshops, family friendly with an emphasis on fancy dress, general silliness and the best party you could ever go to (other than Glastonbury). Homer
I don't mind a fallow year. If the festival happened and I wasn't there, it would kill me. But I can live with going a year without.
