trailer tents

Hi folks! Roughly two years ago I bought a second hand trailer tent and finally managed to get out in it last weekend which was brilliant. Just wondering if anyone else here has one? What's your hints and tips for trailer tentering? What do you have? Where have you taken it?? We are very very new to all this and we don't even have a tow bar yet (our friend towed it for us) - I couldn't believe how much stuff it came with - love it!

Ours is a sunncamp 350se, it's huge, and we didn't put it up right, but we've learnt some lessons for the next time.

I've never slept so well camping!

I had a Sunncamp 350XS for several years and loved it.  Yours may be a slightly different model so my advice may not apply.  Ours had a top made of traditional canvas, rather than polyester, which was brilliant in that it stayed cool in the heat and was warmer in the cold.  But the important thing to remember is that canvas stored away wet will rot.  So it's vital that it has really dried out before you pack it away for storage.

Ours had two zip on awnings to make for a really big social and cooking area.  We also bought a free-standing fridge that ran on calor and a separate toilet tent with a porta potti (nothing like your own lavvie for the middle of the night).  It was also kitted out with full lighting that ran off the leisure battery and I installed a little safe just to store things like cash and credit cards.  They are all little things that just make for a relaxed time away We only ever used it for festivals and it was brilliant.  It also got me into camping porn (all the gear that you build up for a comfortable stay) and started me down the slippery slope to caravans.

I moved up to a lightweight two berth, then a bigger two berth plus two bunk beds and have now finally arrived at a very big twin axle with two fixed full sized beds as well as the double at the front.

Once you've experienced either trailer tenting or caravanning, you won't want to go back to camping.  I wouldn't consider Glastonbury any more if I couldn't get a CV Field ticket.

I've also joined both the Caravan Club and the Camping and Caravan Club (which has a special trailer tent group where you can get lots of advice). Both clubs have their own members-only sites and also discounts at other sites and might be worth considering if you plan to use it for trips other than festivals.

This is ours if erected correctly ;)

We don't currently have a garden and the canvas was slightly damp when we packed up last weekend - it's been raining ever since but hoping to get it to my parents today for an airing out on their washing lines. I was advised to leave the canvas attached to make erecting it easier but since I can't easily air it out on a sunny day I thought it best to remove it. For future trips I'm going to get the bedroom wall section waterproofed so we can just put that up if we don't need the awning.
