Flares

As I said in the other flares thread, the atmosphere they brought to the already bouncing LCD was unbelievable, the rush the whole crowd around me got as the place went bright red when one went off, it was absolutely magical 

I saw plenty of smoke bombs and flares across the weekend, even one in London Underground @ Artwork, all adds the to carnival atmosphere of the festival 

I didn't see one person ejected for setting one off, and the security could easily have caught them, so the festival must agree with the opinion that they're adding to the atmosphere 

Get over it, they're here to stay

They scare me , I have no idea why. Maybe I think they are going to spit and hurt. The ash stuff was all over my jacket but brushed off, and the smoke made my eyes dry (just used optrex to sort that out ) but for some reason they really do scare me and make me jumpy

You're right, they do add to the atmosphere. LCD would have been so boring if someone in the crowd didn't hold up a big red light. Would've probably left the set early and gone back to my tent and played with my lighter.

I have sympathy for people with kids, but there are a lot of things at the festival unsuitable for kids and I think it's up the parents to be vigilant, rather than the festival be sanitised. 

But I respect your view and am happy to agree to disagree with you on this!

I have a sensitive eye problem and they really hurt I end up seeing the bright lights for ages after...as the arse in front of me kept insisting on putting a girl on his shoulders waving the damn things around it made it difficult to avoid them, missed some of Coldplay due to this...inconsiderate in my view.

I said they brought something to an already bouncing atmosphere. There was certainly a rush in the crowd around me when they went off, which was directly beside me

I have seen people with them just swinging them about, not on someones shoulders. That is an issue. 

But holding it high, up whilst on someones shoulders should not be a problem.

Ive never brought one to a festival or gig, but don't see the problem

Russy I'm shocked. I thought you would have found the flares as threatening as those northern Irish and welsh football fans marauding the site. 

 

After all apprently will grigg is on fire. Sounds dangerous to me.

During lcd soundsytem everytime someone lit a flare the security guy jumped over the soundesk barrier and made them put it out . Must have extinguished at least 4 which involved getting the flare person down off someones shoulders and stamping it out. 

Just out of interest, did they get escorted away or anything after the commotion?

I saw people being asked to put them out with no further action taken, certainly never saw anyone being escorted away

No the security guy just jumped over the barrier and made them put it out each time and then headed back behind the barriers. This particular guy was very keen as he was also trying to spot people in the crowd with drugs and trying to get them to hand them over to him. One guy refused and the security guy pursued him through the crowd but seemed to let him go after talking to him. Didn't see whether it was weed, coke or whatever but this security chap was doing his best to clamp down on everything!

The people carrying wax flares at head height on weds/thurs were more likely to cause injury than the other kind in crowds.

Yep - all fireworks are banned. Glastonbury haven't hammered the message home yet as they assumed "don't set off fireworks in the middle of a crowd" was fairly self explanatory but it seems not.

Or they don't feel the need to mummy people and can trust adults in a field to act responsibly. This view has been justified  by no-one suffering any injuries. 

Going to take some myself next year, they look brilliant.

Except for the person that did suffer an injury.

You'll probably be fine but bear in mind from the Glastonbury police site:

"Persons using fireworks will be evicted from site and materials confiscated."

There are certain licensing issues around them so if you're caught with them in a search on the way in don't expect to be treated lightly. 

They did actually clamp down on fireworks around 10 years ago when people would set off impromptu displays (though not in crowds)- it also led to the introduction of the official fireworks shows.

i love them, they add some great atmosphere to night time gigs.

They are not fireworks, they are marine flares designed for emergency use at sea, totally unsuitable for use in a large crowd, the fact that they "look good" hardly justifies using them, an exploding gas canister looks pretty spectacular but I don't think we want to follow the Reading /Leeds example and start to blow them up in the campsites.
