we've tried and failed to find out the specifics of what the court case is about. Glastonbury won't say as the matter is subjudicy.

From what we've been able to deduce, it could be about pissing in the hedges, or a leak from one of the poo storage tanks (either the long-drops, or the massive poo tank at the farm).

Because the case is about the 2014 festival it seems most likely that it's about the longdrops as they were new for that year, tho that's a guess.

In fact it's in the article linked to above, which says....

The company was charged that on or before June 29, 2014 at the Glastonbury Festival, otherwise than under, and to the extent authorised by an environmental permit, caused or knowingly permitted a water discharge activity or groundwater activity, namely the discharge of human sewage derived from the Glastonbury Music Festival.

As I've said above, it might not be a pissing-in-the-hedges issue, as it's not impossible for one or more of the new longdrop tanks to have had a leak.

Back when I first started going to Glastonbury ('86) the 'tank' for the longdrops was just a hole dug in the ground, and the longdrops would be sited in a slightly different place the next year so that they weren't having to dig up last year's shit. As the years have gone by the environmental regs have got much stricter while the impact has grown from many more people.

If it is to do with pissing in the hedgerows I guess we might see a return of the Green Police next year.

Such a shame, I found that toilet facilities have been far more accessible over the past couple of years and I saw a lot less people pissing in corners. But clearly it isn't enough to make people use them.

this was my first year at Glasotnbury and I was quite surprised by the lack of urinals tbh. plenty of times there were lines and crushes to get into small areas with only room for about 10 people. i can remember at the ones at the back of WH about 50 people in a queue for 3 troughs that could take 3 people each. loads of people resorted to pissing in hedges.

i've been to other loads of other festivals where urinals were more accessible. numbers-wise, less obviously, but they never seemed to be busy or as small as the ones at Glastonbury.

for somewhere with the closeness to the water supply and such an emphasis on telling people not to piss on the ground, I thought they did a bad job of providing urinals tbh.

Fair enough, When I was saying it has improved over the last couple of years im not saying its perfect but on a personal level I have found the toilets more assessable and in the camping areas more hygienic. This may be a sweeping statement but I feel sorry for the ladies who attend glasto as the queue for the long drops etc are usual very long and im not surprised if caught short resorting to using a hedge maybe. but the gentleman to have the urinals I feel there is very little excuse as they are in good supply and very much a jump in jump out job.

I'd say there's been fewer urinals in the last couple of years, since the new longdrops were built.

A lack of uninals always seems daft to me yet it's a feature of just about every festival I've been to, when they must cost much less both with infrastructure costs and on a punter-per-minute basis than the turdis's you get at most festivals. While I've never checked it out, I suspect that might be a consequence of regs which specify the number of toilets needed per thousand punters, but where a urinal doesn't count towards that (it has to be a sit-down jobby).

Accepting the reality that blokes piss in hedgerows, making it more difficult for them to have a piss in the proper place will always have more of them pissing in the hedgerows.

To be honest I don't even know if lack of toilets is a particularly valid issue. The only areas I can think of which are a bit sparse at peak times is the front of WH (loads of fence pissers to the right of the stage, yet it's ideal for a set of urinals/composts), and maybe the area by Glade/Leftfield? But even then I think there's some in the field the other side of the track next to Glade.

So very picky from me, really there's little excuse.

I suffer from what I can only describe as the worst TWBS in history, but I've never had to resort to pissing anywhere I shouldn't.  It's a matter of being a grown up, not a child.

It is hardly unusual to see some idle bastard pissing in the hedges yards from a toilet. Depressingly.

Deploy the Green Police and give them tasers, but (and here's the clever bit) zap the stream of piss not the pisseur. That'd stop 'em.

Frankly though occasionally you can get "caught short" there are so many toilets through out the site that there is little justification for pissing anywhere other than in a toilet.

it's over a decade since I've been to T in the Park now, but it was pretty normal there to see guys walk into the fenced off urinals bit, but then piss up the fence inside and not in the urinals.

If there's a queue at a busy time I can at least understand why a bloke might piss in the hedge, but pissing up the fence when inside the urinal area? Mental.

Its not just the guys doing it either.  T in the Park brings out the worst in some folk!

I haven't noticed it at Glastonbury anywhere near as much as other festivals. The worst I've ever seen is both years I want to V. Loads of blokes doing it as you would expect, but I was amazed at the amount of women I seen just pulling there pants down and pissing everywhere. It wasn't even against a fence either half of the time.

couldn't disagree more. maybe it was because I was new, but there were loads of times I had no clue where the toilets were and there didn't seem to be any close-by on the map. any time I was in The Park, I went to the ones at the corner of Pennards which seemed to be closest, which only had room for only a small amount of people, they should have had ones in The Park itself. Silver Hayes only has them at one end according to the map, need ones down the other JP end. none in Shangri-La according to the map, although I presume there must be some in there somewhere. tiny urinal area at the back of WH, needs to be way bigger plus ones at the front of the WH stage on one side. if you're at the Other stage you have to go to the back of Oxlyers, to the left of the stage is a prime position for them. big swab of the Leftfield/Markets/Williams Green area with no toilets. nothing immediately at John Peel, closest ones are a walk through Lower Mead.

there's no excuse for pissing on the fence during the day, but when you have to walk 5 minutes in the dark, half-pissed, without your mates, potentially losing them when you come back, I can understand why loads of people don't bother and just go directly to the closest fence.

maybe it's cheaper for Glastonbury to take the fine rather than providing more urinals and the sewage digging/works for them.

I can't much disagree that at some places around the site the loos are further away than they might otherwise be in an ideal world, but I don't think that stands up as an excuse for an individual.

They're not a pleasant thing to be near to you for too long, so I can understand if there's any recluctance by the fest to introduce them in more-accessible places. They defo take the environmental considerations seriously..

Ghostdancer - this isnt aimed at you but I don't accept that you people just don't know where the toilets are - they just cant be arsed to take responsibility. Part of being an adult is actually noticing where you are and what you're doing.

Its not loads of 'people' going to the fence is it? its mostly loads of men - do women have a special magical built in detector for the nearest toilet? No, just having a bit more respect for themselves and their surroundings.

I agree it's largely men, tho not exclusively.

And I reckon the mechanics has a lot to do with the difference. :P

I'm sure there are some at the side of the Park aren't there? I remember using them before SFA with not too much of a walk! You're right about Other/Silver Hayes etc. They are areas I don't use too much, explains why I didn't really consider them! Spot on about WH/Glade too.

Good point about first-timers, toilets are often a bit of a search to find at times and I've been going 6 years or so :D
