A Decent White Boxed Wine

Hi,

My lovely friend & I are looking for recommendations for a decent box of wine. Over the years our tastes have changed & although we're not snobs but we do like a good bottle of wine. The problem I've found is that it's not often possible to buy a bottle of the wine to try before you commit to the box & we really don't want to be left with a warm bag of vinegar!!

Thanking You

The obvious problem is drinking room temperature white wine. My love for the grape surpasses all other alcoholic beverages, getting drunk off wine is one of the best pastimes anyone can have. However, I just cannot enjoy it unless its chilled.

No such thing.

Has become an annual comedy wandering the fields on the Monday finding groups of girls desperately trying to get down the last of the bag of white wine that got discarded when it reached air temperature mere hours after gates opened lol

WORST.HANGOVER.EVER

Nah. Think I only had one hangover last year and that was due to strawberry daiquiris in the Rock Lounge at 5am.

A nice red won't destroy you. They're hard to find though granted. Some of them are complete piss. Stay clear of shiraz or anything over 14%.

Did 09 and 10 on "Good Sicilian Red" from Morrisons (which the Guardian also liked, sort of) and the Tesco Cote du Rhone works. Think I got a Sainsburys Cotes du Rhone last year and it was great.

But its a fine line. Had some random donkey piss in 2011 and it destroyed me. Ill be getting one of the above this year. Saved me literally hundreds, always had a drink on me and doesn't fill you up like beer. Which is expensive and tastes like badgers jizz.

Yeah, we get the pouches of Red out on the Sunday. Nothing too harsh.

Used to be a decent wine topic on the Discussions boards a few years ago that I lurked on. Someone should bring that back.

Away from Glastonbury, and when on a budget, I absolutely hammer Sainsburys Winemakers Choice Chenin Blanc. Fantastic stuff at the price. For my pallet anyway!!

This is rather nice, they have it in bottles so you can try it out first. It's not the cheapest, but I'm keeping my eye on it to see if it goes on offer. Or use those vouchers!

This one is good - I can definitely recommend - on par with a Malborough Sauvignon Blanc and not too bad warm as it is quite fruity

I took "Good Sicilian Red" for a few years - good stuff. Haven't taken any for the last couple for some reason.

I've noticed Morrisons has also started selling Felix Solis' "Sol de Espana" in 1L TetraPak cartons for £4.49. Comes in generic red and generic white. Not tried them yet but will probably give it a try in the next couple of weeks.

Can you drink a lot of it and then report on the hangover? Saves me doing it!

Its worrying that you don't.

I've done the bags of red wine for years, used to be three now it's two and I'm less hilarious for passers by.

In truth got sick of bringing wine home that I then couldn't face drinking.... I mix it up more now. A lot of drinks work well with wine so with a combination of cider, oj, lemonade and cola you can have a mad variety over the five days

Plus there's something joyously decadent about squirting wine in your gob from on high, even better when folk keep asking you if it's blood in the bag

the words `decent` and `wine` are to separate entities aren't they? id imagine `bitter, sour grapes` would taste even worse when warm anyway.....

hearing about boxed wine reminds me of travels in australia drinking goon(cheapest of the cheap boxed wine that a lot of backpackers drink purly because its so cheap.....I remember some even featured `fish egg extract` on the ingredients list`.....fruity lexia...anyone heard of it?

An extract from fish swim bladder can be used to fine wine, basically remove sediment and make it look better

Isinglass

Causes particulate stuff to clump and fall out, doesn't leave anything measurable behind. Used in many clear beers too

Cause of much consternation from the vegans
