can you not just ring the hotel and cancel the booking, surely they could fill it straight away and it would be less of a hassle for you??

Caveat emptor. If it's a non-refundable room, then you also can't change the name on the booking. They usually ask for a credit card on checkin, or ID if you pay cash, so there's a good chance they may well turn you away if you're not the name on the booking.
