Booze on coaches

Hi there, I am travelling to Glastonbury via National Express and I was wondering how much they actually let you get away with carrying - between two of us we have 2 large rucksacks, a tent and large sleeping bag (being carried by hand), I believe this is within the restrictions but would we be able to get away with a crate or two of booze as well if we can manage to lug it?

Just wondering from people that have experience using National Express.

Cheers,

I've never travelled by coach so can't answer. What did occur to me though was to change from bringing crates of heavy booze by bringing wines and spirits instead. It would save you weight and space. Just a thought. Oh, the wines and spirits would have to be in plastic bottles.

In addition to the above you could always get to the festival, pitch up and then get a lift to the supermarkets in Shepton Mallet and back. Put the excess beer in one of the Lock Ups and draw from it over the following days. It will save you money at bars and will help prevent you from maybe being forced to drink Tuborg, which as we all know, comes out of the devil's willy. Or is it his arse? I'm not sure now.

whatever anyone claims - its not going to help you because its all down to the individual driver ' on the day ' and they have the power to knock you back and then what are you going to do ?
I travel by crew Coach so its a private hire and its a struggle to get all the gear on and if only 50% showed up with a case of Beer there would be no room for them in the hold - in the old days you could sling the cases on the floor but there is no way could you do that now.
You could use a bit of commonsense - rather than holding a case each its better to put them into a single rucksack as it may avoid any possible problems as they are not going to inspect every bag.
This is a shot after the event so you can just imagine what its like going to the event.
You have to assume that there will be many who will chance their arm and with limited luggage space not everyone will be able to take what they want and the ones on offer will be the people who show up with a case in plain view.
once you get to the event take Yoghurt on a Stick advice and store them in the nearest Lock Ups

Well I was planning already on putting spirits into bottles in backpacks and then maybe getting a multipack of cans or two to carry on to save cash on having to buy in the festival - its probably not worth the risk.

We've got a extra large suitcase/holdall which im going to fasten to a trolley which should fit booze, tents and camping equip into all in one go, that should do the trick

Is it easy enough to get into town for Booze? I know there is buses etc, but how long does it take? And they won't have ran out of beer on the Wednesday will they haha? Debating not taking any beer at all so I can carry everything with no problem.

Edit: Just noticed Tesco does click and collect, has anyone used this before in Glastonbury? Also theres the Morrisons which is closer to the bus drop off (the town centre) Whats the chance of running out of alcohol? Thanks

I think we'll take enough for wednesday and then stoxk up using the shuttle bus on thursday, I read on here somewhere that the bus stop in glastonbury is closer to the tesco than it is in sheptom but will worry about that on the day

It's about 3 miles from Gate A to Tesco in Shepton Mallet.

A few years ago (2010/2011) I saw someone with a small trolley - I think one of those granny shopping trolleys with 2 or 3 crates on it - getting turned away from a National Express coach. It wasn't all bad news though, as they said they'd try to get her on the next coach.

Like Glasto Worker says, if everyone tries to bring an extra bit of luggage for their booze it's obviously not going to pan out. It just depends on how much luggage they've got to cope with and what the driver feels like on the day.

  • 3 weeks later...

You may need to allow a few hours to get out to the shops and back. Depending on the day and time there may be a bit of traffic :)

That's time you could be enjoying yourself otherwise, so personally I'd only consider it if there wasn't much of an alternative.

I travelled by NE last year and they were no bother at all.

Being a 23 year old girl, I took everything but the kitchen sink and they let me on with it all. Between two of us we had 2 large rucksacks, 1 large overfilled sack truck, then 2 other bags full of shite.

The only slight issue we had was coming home. Our coach was supposed to leave at 11:30, it left at 14:00 instead. It wasn't a huge issue though as we expected the delay anyway.

I was hoping somone would start similar thread! :P, might be having to go by coach this year sadly! (Looked into the train but bloody hell the prices!).

So they don't have no problem with sack trucks/trollelies going if there's space? Was thinking of maybe loading three boxes of cans onto the bottom, then my rucksack and tent and wrapping all it in clingfilm/palletwrap and hoping to get away with that as "one" item :P.

You'd think National Express would be a bit Ryanair about this actually and charge you for taking extra actually! (If it gurrateared you the space you need, I'd think many people would pay 10/20 quid say!)
