Pukkelpop 2014

I've rounded up a volunteer, checked the dates and the prices and it looks like Pukkelpop 2014 is a go! Hence an all new thread.

So hopes and dreams for headliners then:

With Neil Young & Crazy Horse playing Hyde Park, they could be looking to make amends for the cancellations this year, so they are top of the list.

I always like to think a huge band will play so I’m going Metallica (for no reason other than they appear to be on the festival circuit next year).

Then there’s always something unexpected who is huge locally, so I’m going Depeche Mode.

I expect I will be wrong on all counts, but I’d take any one from the 3 (though NY&CH would be my preference)

Any thoughts?

I confidently predict I won't have previously heard of around half of the 200+ acts on the bill, and also that 75% of the bands I eventually get to see will be new discoveries coming from that (to me) unknown corner.

And that's why I love PKP so much.

Having said that, I have a gut feeling Neutral Milk Hotel will be coming this year. Not headliners of course, but probably good for a 9pm-ish slot in the Marquee. Not based on any insider knowledge, just a gut feeling and the fact they're playing a festival in Oslo the weekend before.

I usually rely on Semprini's posts for the real insde track.

Also at Werchter. Sorry...

Bloody heck!

I'll go Blur then :-)

Think that Blink 182 are a good shout, playing Reading so on the festival circuit, would love to see The Hold Steady there too.

Because they were great at Glastonbury I'd also like to see Zac Brown Band, First Aid Kit and Tom Tom Club.

My bet:

Headliners: Blur / Neil Young / dEUS /

Subs: Blink 182 / Biffy Clyro / Kasabian

Final Act: 2 many DJs

dEUS doing their only Belgian gig of 2014 in March, Biffy Clyro isn't a sub by far.

Wouldn't count that much on Neil Young yet, btw. It appears he's making up for some of his August 2013 dates in July 2014, so it isn't said that he'll make up for Pukkelpop at Pukkelpop. Could be Rock Werchter/TW Classic as well.

My predictions and attempts at second guessing who will turn up are often wide of the mark so I doubt this year will be any different!! All good fun though and helps to pass the time! Completely with you on the unknown acts that the organisers unearth every year, definitely a big attraction for me.

As for this year, it's too early to say really as only the early summer festivals have started to announce but I'll be surprised if Blink 182 aren't there (subbing Main). The only one I'm willing to say will be definite at this stage is Disclosure. Can see them closing the Marquee like Paul Kalkbrenner did this year. Jake Bugg is another likely and maybe the National if RW don't get them. Think it's too soon for Iron Maiden to return, although it was 4 years ago so not totally out of the question.

Just praying they go all out again for quality DJs in the Castello, had an amazing time last year for Maya Jane Coles, Ben Pearce, Julio Bashmore etc. Also saw my two best live performances of the weekend in there from TEED and Jagwar Ma (both are more than welcome to come back again if they like!).

Excuse the PP clang but I'm friends on Facebook with the guy who books all the bands and he liked a post this evening about a joint tour next summer between Royksopp and Robyn. Could be nothing but both have played in the past so I wouldn't be surprised to see them back again.

They're asking people to fill in the top-5 wish lists again on the official site.

Do we think anyone at PKP HQ actually ever reads these? Or are they just a way of keeping people out of the pub whilst the real line-up is arranged...?

Who knows as they don't usually release any of the info from the survey? Having said that, I do remember them saying one year that they had two of the top five/ten from the list but there was no mention of who that actually was. Haven't filled mine in yet but it looks as if you get an email with a mock up of the poster with your bands and, if you do it through Facebook, your picture on it too.

Been quite a busy day for announcements but again mostly for festivals in June/July. If they're around at the time wouldn't be surprised to see Two Door Cinema Club high up on Main or possibly Marquee headliner. Oya (week before PP) have QOTSA so they've got to be a strong shout for a headline slot. Got a feeling Rudimental will be there with their live show, either headlining the Dance Hall or possibly closing Main like Chase and Status did this year. Was a bit surprised London Grammar weren't there in 2013 so expect them to be on the bill this time round.

It's slightly frustrating to think that at this very moment there's a group of people sitting in an office somewhere near Hasselt who know probably a quarter or more of the line up! Don't get me wrong, I like the build up and anticipation of waiting to find out who will be there but we're always one of the last festivals to be announced. March seems a long way off at this point.

One of the PKP programmers once said that they do partially. They have different methods to select (sub)headliners, but the wish lists are handy to find out what smaller bands people want on the line up. They even mentioned that they learned of new stuff through those lists that then got booked.

Do you mean that you're certain NY won't be there (do you have insider info) or that it's not guaranteed that he will be there? Hanging hopes on him playing

NY won't be there because he's playing another Belgian festival the week before - on a blooming Tuesday as well, you knob Neil... I can't take both weeks off.

Thanks, though this makes me very unhappy - With RW getting 3 stellar headline acts and NY playing elsewhere PKP will have to dig deep to get impressive names this year.

On the plus side, they mention European tour which gives me hope for NY&CH at Glastonbury, or at least UK date/dates other than just Hyde Park.

That would mean 2 extra hours in the beer tent then. Every cloud and all that...

That's a good point, well made. Can't abide Kings of Leon now.

I'm not into Neil Young myself but think it's pretty poor that he hasn't honoured the booking he cancelled at the last minute. It really left the festival in the lurch and you'd think that, having had in theory a whole year to sort it out, he would have arranged his schedule to include a return to PKP. You can debate whether it was his fault or if he had any other option but that doesn't alter the fact that it was within his power to decide whether to come back or not. Perhaps he feels he is appeasing his Belgian fans just by playing somewhere in the country next summer? Must be a bit of a kick in the teeth for the PP organisers though.

That's pretty much what I was thinking, apart from the bit about not being into Neil Young...

I'm disappointed, but probably not half as much as Chokri right now. Bit of a poor show from Neil - I hope he had a good reason.

Tbh, I'm wondering if PKP is actually caring much about it. If you saw what people were demanding after NY's cancellation (Netsky, Major Lazer, Editors, ...) it was obvious that the average Pukkelpop-goer wasn't really that interested in his show. Even more: if they booked him, it would be the third year in a row that they're 'making up' for earlier years (Foo Fighters, Eminem, Neil Young). This while a lot of people just want to see some variety.

I can imagine they tried their best to book him, without a doubt. But I don't think they tried as if their life depended on it, seeing as a mid-sized festival was able to grab him instead.

Chemical Brothers are long overdue for a headline slot, 10 years to be exact. For me, there's no better live act in the world when they're on the ball.

Royksopp would be great.

Always thought that a proper dedicated house night would go down really well at PP (maybe its just me), so Carl Cox, David Morales etc would be ace.

In terms of guitar bands I'd love for an ACDC or Aerosmith to headline. A proper hit after hit balls out rock band would be a massive highlight, and of course, Prince wouldn't be unwanted.

From a rap/hip hop point of view, I'd love Kanye West as a headliner and Public Enemy would be a winner.

In reality, Deus, Snow fucking Patrol and the Offspring will probably be picked. But as its been said before and was evidently true last year, it's all about the undercard and up and comers at Pukkelpop.
