Proved that when you dismissed an entire medium

I can't say I've ever had much time for self-appointed YouTube experts on any subject to be honest. I'm sure they're very informative and entertaining. I'm just not interested in what they have to say.

He's a music critic, not a 'self-appointed expert'.

Fantano helped a couple of acts get big over the past few years like Brockhampton and Injury Reserve, he can be annoying but I'll always respect him for putting me on to some great acts.

On to the album: I'm kind of lukewarm to it after a few listens, the pastiche they're going for doesn't really work for me, Regine's vocals on some tracks are pretty bad unfortunately, Peter Pan is baffling and isn't helped by the two tracks following it and does anyone feel that the production and overall sound of the record is a bit flat and lifeless? I can't quite put my finger on it but the way this album sounds just doesn't work, it doesn't jump out at me really at all.

I do love Electric Blue and the title track though, I'm hoping it grows on me the way it has for some of you.

What makes him important?

Gemuinely interested, never heard of the guy before a couple of hours ago.

Maybe important was not the right word here, but he is definitely the most well known music critic at the moment. His reviews rank consistently in the 100.000 views sphere with some – like his excellent TPAB video reaching millions. In addition to that he is extremely popular in large music communities like r/hiphopheads or r/indieheads where new videos about popular records are talked about as much as say a Pitchfork review.

He gave Reflektor 5/10 which is unbelievably harsh, so it was fairly evident that he wasn't going to enjoy Everything Now.

I've needed the album in for a few days now, still love Chemistry. Even Peter Pan is much more bearable than the first time I heard it. I'd give it an 8/10 at the moment.

Given it 6 or 7 spins now and I still think it's a disappointment overall. Yes there are songs I can't get out of my head and find myself humming all the time (e.g. the title track, PYMOM, Electric Blue) but there are also so many that I can't even listen to all the way through now (Chemistry, Signs of Life, Infinite Content...).

I'll give it more time but can't see myself appreciating it much more than I currently do.

Anyways... got tickets for Wembley and fortunately the album hasn't dampened my excitement in any way :D

I've only listened once and was pleasantly surprised. Maybe this thread lowered my expectations! Enjoyed throughout - even the ones that most people hated. I'm in the 'the first two albums are by far the best' camp too.

I'm going in for a second listen now - will see if anything grates!

Out of interest, is there a rule of thumb of the amount of times a reviewer listens to an album before writing up the review? General consensus on here and other people I've talked to is that it was disappointing on first listen but got better and better with each listen and was just wondering if reviewers give it much of a chance.

Until you like it imo

Same impression as first listen - whole album is decent bar We Don't Deserve Love, which is dreary.

High point is Put Your Money On Me - poss cos it reminds me of ABBA (it's either Regine's vocal or I'm just a bit simple and it's the mention of 'Money').

Good interview with Win just now on Beats 1. Got a bit choked up by the end when he was talking about family and writing Peter Pan.

Most notable quote imo was “people think I’m talking about someone else when I’m talking about myself”. Also explains the marketing campaign and the thematic idea of Everything Now beyond the whole consumerism angle. Echo chambers, basically.

Yeah just finished watching it and had no clue that Peter Pan was about that. And then at the end... how's Zane always making these artists cry?

Think I might just make an album playlist out of the last two records combined and listen to that instead.

1. Reflektor

2. Everything Now

3. We Exist

4. Here Comes the Night Time

5. Electric Blue

6. It's Never Over (Hey Orpheus)

7. Porno

8. Afterlife

9. Put Your Money On Me

10.Supersymmetry

11. We Don't Deserve Love

That makes me feel a lot better about the last two albums output, thats for sure.

Exchange Electric Blue for Creature Comfort and have the closing three as WDDL>>Afterlife>>Supersymmetry and I'd be all over that.
