Sales wise they dwarf the Queens - agreed. But their recent output has been patchy and as a live draw I don't think theres any comparison.

Youre right - Corgan is a laughing stock and what happened to D'Arcy is v sad.

Id say the Pumpkins are about as heavy as The Cure. Both bands have their heavy tracks but arn't seen as heavy. Same with Pixies

Considering The Cure had to stop a glasto headline performance due to crushing and were invited back I wouldnt worry about this so called death list.

Smashing Pumpkins are a bit heavier than The Cure. doubt you'd get many people 'moshing' to The Cure songs, whereas you'd definitely get that to some Smashing Pumpkins songs

but i definitely wouldn't put Smashing Pumpkins up there as a risk band - if they headlined Other i doubt there would be any point where the crowd got too out of control or anything

Billy is one of those frontmen along with Axl Rose who still thinks he's some kind of king amongst men as he was viewed in the 90's. those little strops may have played out back in Smashing Pumpkins heyday but these days it just makes him look like a massive c**t. i think he's sorted it out a bit lately though. i think Zeitgeist prettymuch failing gave him a bit of a kick up the arse

With the QotSA comparison: I think at that the heavy end of the Pumpkins spectrum might be a little heavier than QotSA, especially QotSA set's nowadays without Nick Olivieri. Perhaps Queens would sell out a venue faster, but I reckon SP would still get a pretty sizeable crowd on the other. I don't really know the size of the Queens crowd in '11 cos I was right down the front the whole time. Unfortunately I had to wait through the Kaisers at the back and their crowd was pretty big. Thinly spread, but only about 10/20 metres from the metal walkway. They're a band that lots of people would come see at a fest but not on the tour.

Thtat being said, A Song for the Dead was pretty damn heavy.

Although not an entirely accurate way of gauging popularity I always have a peak at Google trends if I'm curious to try and work out interest in one band vs another.

Pumpkins

QOTSA

Always good fun to type in "Razorlight" or "The Fratellis" and see what happens :sarcastic:

Interesting, but as with most 'evience' that people try and use to prove that band x is bigger than band y (lastfm listens, facebook likes) means absiolutly nothing in this context. Good fun to play around with though.

And rememebr kids, other internet search engines are available.

disagree, I think this is a really good way to gauge and compare popularity. OK, so there are peaks when bands make announcements and such, but Smashing Pumpkins consistently over the past 8/9 years get more searches/interest in them that QotSA.

and yes there are other search engines, but please enlighten me as to which ones have better search algorithms and features than google.
