there are bastards who say they aren't... there are racists who say they aren't... whatever they say they are doesn't change what they are

It's a good question. I'd probably suggest that the closet thing there are to people living the hippie ideal are those in a self sustaining community somewhere, but they're very unlikely to be at Glastonbury (for a whole variety of reasons). My problem is more that the public perception many people have of them are those people who I referred to in my earlier post. That 'funny old fella who runs the record stall down the market' type of character. He probably sees himself as a bit of hippy and is referred to by most people in the same way. But to me, he isn't. It's a problem both of self perception (as tony blair identifies) and external recognition.

sorry, bit early on a Sunday for me to be pouring out this badly thought out nonsense. I'm off for a brew.

A little lost. Are you saying that people that live in a city, or those with jobs, cant be a "hippy"?

Hardcore 'hippies' like lots things evolved mainly because the world changed and some probably still have the same hippy ethic that they had when the movement was thriving.

I don't know if the world will ever be ready for peace and love on a global scale.

Depends how you define hippy, but I'm considering it as someone who rejects capitalism, is some sort of self sufficient/back to the land advocate, and someone who 'drops out' of society (for want of a better phrase) or rejects societal norms. pretty hard to do that while holding down a conventional job and living in a city.

That's my definition of 'hippy' of course. Other people may have a different definition; long hair, easily confused, says 'Maaaaan' a lot. That's perfectly feasible in a city.

yep, but some have made an art-form of doing all of that while hiding behind charity. As far as they're concerned, they're still taking mug straight punters for a ride, while being completely blind to the fact that they're doing all they like to say they detest.

If you class capitalism in its truest sense of working for an income you may have a point, but I think more along the lines of hippies not wanting to conform with the social norms.

Yeah, I can see that. In what ways do you reckon they're not conforming with societal norms? Which norms do you have to reject to become a hippy, for you? I reckon we all draw the line in a different place.

But many of the people classified by themselves, or others, aren't hippies at all. It's a bit like students who grow dreads for three years at university and sneer at the straights, then chop them off as soon as they leave and have to get a proper job. There's a tremendous of hypocrisy among lots of people who like to think of themselves as alternative or different.

The irony of watching 10,000 levellers fans, in absolute unision, and all looking very similar, singing 'There's only one way of life, and that's your own' has never really left me... ;)
