If you don't 'buy' petrol or diesel any more for your van I hope you don't syphon it out of other people's vehicles! :sarcastic:

Nah .... I had my van converted to LPG a year ago .... it was a costly outlay of about £1k, but one which has now paid for itself with what I've paid in fuel, plus the van is now worth an extra amount of around the cost of the conversion because it costs half the price to run compared to petrol.

It's changed a van that I felt hesitant to drive because of the fuel costs (it only does around 20mpg) into something I'm happy to drive at any time, and it actually costs me less in fuel than the car it replaced when I bought it. And on top all that, it's a far greener fuel.

It's one of the smartest things I've ever done I reckon. :)

Saw loads of people topping their tamks up, but never once saw anyone checking the air pressure in their tyres. Oh, how they are going to look foolish when they realise they are a little flat and there is no air to pump it up as it hasn't been delivered. If I had a car I would have a few balloons full at home.

I read this on the news. For fucks sake how stupid can you be? She was decanting petrol into a glass jug, in the kitchen, whilst cooking tea on a fucking gas cooker. This is where euthanasia should be mandatory. This woman is now going to be a burden on the NHS for years to come, and will probably want to claim some sort of benefit to help her arse around.

I have not seen such stupidity since in the army asking someone to refill the Tilley lamp, which he did whilst it was still lit, or the time some idiot through petrol onto the BBQ. It took weeks for my eyebrows to grow back

Some spectacular queues for the garage at the end of the road today ! Similar at most others that are still open locally apparently. Must have been getting on for the best part of a mile in 1 direction, causing no end of problems with traffic backed up all over the place so needing Police and numerous others in hi-viz jackets desperately trying to keep something moving and stop the barstewards from blocking other roads and exits just in case, god forbid, someone should try to nip in front them  Apparently the queue time is at least 1 hour at the mo and was significantly longer than that earlier on.

But no well dodgy German driving providing some additional entertainment as there was at a different location yesterday  BTW, it was indeed the big "D" and German plates on the rear of the vehicle that gave the game away yesterday although I'm sorely tempted to suggest that said "D" should have been located elsewhere and all the morons various panicking should probably be marked in the very same way for that matter:

The stupid, selfish and sheep-like mentality of by far the majority of drivers never ceases to amaze (and quite often amuse) me !

I've been driving around Birmingham today and haven't seen a single queue at any petrol station I have passed. I'd have expected to see at least one with all this talk of looming shortages etc.

I was watching a documentary the other night about the safety films the UK Governement used to produce in the 70's and 80's. In all honesty I can see one coming out along the lines of "For Fuck sake don't jump off a cliff", but "Don't boil petrol, it goes BANG!!!"

I am just going to stand back and light the blue touch paper.

Well self-immolation is all the rage at the moment. It's no longer the preserve of the Free Tibet Movement.

It's not quite that simple though is it?
Yeah, the general public as a whole are being stupid but it's hard to make the same argument about individuals.

As an individual you see that most of the local garages have run out of fuel and think that you better not let your tank get too empty because filling up might not be as simple as just rolling up to the garage like you normally do. So when you see a garage with fuel and you have less than say half a tank left, you fill up so that you don't have to worry about it for however long a full tank lasts you.
I suspect that everyone knows that their behaviour on mass is the only thing that's causing the problem, but that doesn't change they as individuals aren't going to be able to freely buy fuel over the next few days.
Call them sheep all you want but filling up your tank ensures that you can go about your normal daily life for the next week or so, not filling up puts a question mark over it.

Bit of a catch 22 situation.

I think there is diffinately some of this. I guess the other problem is Easter Holidays and everyone filling up to go away.

Are we back to normality yet (haven't been past a garage yet today)?

There is a simple(ish) solution to this panic buying. Simply say that you are not allowed to buy petrol until your tank is half empty. The problem with this is implementation though... you'd have to have someone going round looking at everyone's petrol gauges.

I passed a garage earlier this morning. Just a few cars filling up, no major queue.

Unless, of course, the government were looking to end the quarter on a high or they were simply tapping into the mob mentality so that if/when a strike does occur, most people have started filling up at half a tank rather than leaving it to run empty, thus, keeping the country going. If it was either of those then you've got to give them credit, but I don't think the government really is that clever...

Incompetant, detached, out-of-touch over-privileged morons or evil conniving manipulating scheming bastards?

As with anything, the truth is probably somewhere in the middle.

I'm wondering if it was a test to see how stupid and manipulated the public really can be, almost as though George Osborne and David Cameron chatted about it while taking a drunken piss at the Bullington Club urinals before one of them saying "Hey, hey......Dave.....why don't we....I dunno....just fuck with them for a bit?"
