Did reading have any competition for bands in 2002? You seem a bit desperate dissing the lineup this year

Not at all, there's usually a topic every year comparing the line-up with one from ten years prior. I just feel that a lot on here will see 2002's line-up as better than 2012's.

There are so many 'VS' thread and pointless threads

Well yeah of course. The festival scene was comparably far less competitive 10 years ago. I think you'll find that the standard of the line up for most festivals has declined because there are so many competing to get the top bands.
If you don't like the line-up then don't go.

I was going to agree a bit with you thetime. 10 years ago it was a different festival completely with much less competition.
But to comment on your vs VCK.
Friday shows that mid main downwards is still nothing to shout about.
Saturday is a mixed bag really, and to be fair 2002 just had Foo Fighters on a different day, now we still have them.
Sunday, except for Slipknot and The Offsrping, it actually beats 2002 quite easily.
Compare it to 2005 if you need to, seen as one of the best all round lineups over the years compared to any of them.

10 - 16 2002 wins! but double Foos would be too much! And some of them could go either way for me.

Spot on especially for reading, glasto/v/titp were always competing and reading pretty much didnt have any competition. Now they have download/soni to compete with, result is watered down lineups and less rocky music. I like the lineup over all so I bought a ticket.

Of course a lineup from 10 years ago is gonna look better than one now because you have bands that are headliners/subs now playing lower slots making it look like a much better lineup than now, you can't compare lineups on strength when they're this many years apart.

I actually think the Foos day is very solid and has a fair number of bands I really want to see.

The other thing worth mentioning is where those bands were in 2002. Obviously if we got that line up today it would be fantastic. But bear in mind that in 2002, bands like Sum 41 and Less Than Jake were nothing compared to what they are now. Even Muse and Slipknot were nowhere near as highly regarded as they are today.
In 5-10 years time there's a chance we'll look back on this years line up and see that a lot of the bands have gone on to become headliners.

Yeh one year in 2019 we'll look back and be like, 'Cancer bats were only 2nd bottom on a stage they are headlining!'
or Paramore used to sub and now they are mid NME!'
