While KOL is a great example of a band making less interesting music in order to become mainstream it would be nice if a band could release a debut album that captured everyone's imagination and signalled a shift in the popular music tastes. I can't remember one since the Arctics over 6 years ago now. Unfortunately while there are still good bands out there they are just not popular with the youth of today who buy records and essentially that is what dictates what gets radio play. I see The Enemy got to number 9 in the album charts today and I really think their latest effort is the best I have heard in years.
Responding to your first point, guitar music in particular goes in cycles. At the moment it's the turn of more dance influenced guitar bands such as Two Door Cinema Club, and you can see a lot more pop dance guitar music coming through.
Secondly, I'm sure you're aware the charts don't have the same influence today as they once did. Acts rely more and more on touring, and tour three or four times a year. Unless you're signed to a major, it's easy for acts to focus more on touring and build their name that way.
Thirdly, I'd argue the reason The Enemy got to number nine (perhaps higher than they should have done) is because they make the same music that everyone's been hearing for a long time. I think Oasis is the suitable comparison. Your opinion of whether The Enemy are good or not is subjective, and I wouldn't challenge that, but I think it's fair to group them in with stuff like Oasis, Arctic's debut, which doesn't challenge music, more challenges their accountants.
