Totally related.

Gig tickets are a lot more expensive than they used to be and well above inflation.

I think its agreed that's one of the main reason is the thieves downloading illegal music.

You also only have to look at festival prices from 10 years ago to see the increase.

I illegal download and I have no shame in it what so ever. With about 6000 songs on my iPod, if I were to buy them all perfectly legally then my iPod would be worth more than a car with full insurance and a full tank of petrol.

I illegally download, and then if I really think the band are that good, then I'll buy merchandise, go to shows etc. Illegal Downloading is just a proving ground. I downloaded albums from bands like Foster The People, Florence and The Machine, Less Than Jake, do I really want to invest money into these people when I didn't even enjoy listening to their music?

I occasionally illegally download (usually if I want something on my iPod that I've only got on tape or vinyl) and buy second hand (usually to get up to date with back catalogues) and I have a great time doing it. I justify it by the fact that I have a massive record and CD collection and probably kept Our Price in business for a good few months longer than it should have been, so I've done my bit for the record industry.

Since Spotify I do it a lot less though, that's definitely a better way to check out stuff if you aren't sure about it. Unfortunately for me the days of walking into a record shop every Monday and buying two or three albums without knowing much about them are long gone.

With new, smaller bands I will buy first hand to support them, or if I have to preorder then I'll be getting stuff new, but do the likes Mick and Keef really give a fuck that my somewhat enormous Stones collection didn't send a penny their way?
